Re: an old swiss lady

I suspect a little dementia here. The inhibitions tend to weaken in older people for organic reasons and they show less emotional control. Often racial or ethnic biases that we ordinarily keep under control "come out".

Consider the source. if she does report you the police very likely will as well.

In a different country years ago (with about 2% immigration), I had moved there only a week prior and was out walking my dog when an old lady with a mink coat (and lovely matching hat) walked up with a big smile on her face. She pets my dog and launches into rapid-fire spew about, presumably, how sweet my dog is. After about a minute of this, she catches a breath and I blurt out, in English, that I'm new here and I don't speak her language. Her face immediately contorted into this mask of rage, said something that was later translated into "f-ing foreigners", spat on me and stomped off in a huff. Yes, spat on me. I stood there for a few minutes just completely unable to process what had just happened. I went home and cried and though I managed to settle in over the next few years, that experience never quite disappeared. Fortunately, I never saw her again or, if I did, she didn't try the stunt a second time.

Not generalising here, are we?

Can a mod please do the decent thing and remove the word swiss from the title?
My meaning is that Swiss folks tend to be (what many would consider) aggressive with their opinions about other people's public behavior. But even for a Swiss this woman was over the top.

Will have to find the article (was it here I saw it?) but apparently old people are cranky farts because they take in and process way more information than younger people, and the constant stream of information is just too much sometimes. So they are sort of like this at maximum capacity,

One linguistically remote from any IE languages, but still in a country in the EU. That should narrow it down for you.

Re: an old swiss lady

I am sorry you had such a bad experience today. I know it is easier to think after the fact but you would have been far better not to justify yourself to her at all, in order to stay in control.

You could actually have agreed with her, telling her you are indeed a torturer in training and practicing first with children before you move up to the second level which is torturing interfering old ladies and you really hope that by that time, you will be quite an expert and be able to do far more than making the old dears sit in time out, as you heard water boarding grannies is such good fun!

Better to take it into the ridiculous and show her the error of her ways than take onboard the rantings of a misguided old woman.

Hey potatoding (you have a really cute user name!)
My 2 children are almost 2 years apart and the stories I could tell you, well, they'd make you cry and they'd make you laugh . My eldest is now 3 and the stories/experiences continue.
You will more than likely be faced with many more situations like this one but fear not, some days are better than others and you learn to shrug it off more easily.

May strength be with you my dear

I know your intentions are in the right place, but for a number of reasons, this is not a good approach, particularly since the OP mentioned she's of an Asian background and I know (and admire) their deeply ingrained respect for elders, no matter how crazy they might be. But, even without that, when you're not a native, agitating the aged can go very wrong especially when you don't know the local language and it's her word against the foreigner's. Heck, even in my own country it's a losing battle with the home and language advantage. It's best to tread carefully and escape with as much dignity as possible.

If the two local guys hadn't stepped in, the cops likely would have figured out grannie's dubious grasp on reality on their own though it's unlikely they would have done anything about the comments that, at least in the EU, probably qualify for a hate crime or harassment of a racist nature.

Having experienced this sort of unpleasantry myself (for the crime of not being from the right country), I can say that it's a real shocker to be on the receiving end and even once the sting wears off, the disbelief of anyone being able to behave that way towards another lingers.

Right linguistic tree, wrong country. I left the country out of it because it's the kind of thing you can, as a foreigner, experience anywhere...in spite of the extreme act of being spat upon. While this was years ago and wasn't necessarily representative, it did and does reflect the latent and growing discontent with immigration all over the EU.
