I second that. I believe the proper word is hippocritamus. A hippocritamus is a hypocrite of the worst kind. Their mouth is significantly bigger than the common hypocrite and they resemble a slithery critter far more than a human being.

Re: An open letter to a racist Brit

I very much appreciate your open letter. Glad I wasn't there to meet this guy, but have met many like this in my time!

It is very shocking when you meet people like that... I haven't had it in Switzerland.... yet, but whilst visiting the UK, talking to (unfortuanately) a friends aunt) she was saying how great it must be in Switzerland "cos everyone's white, right?"
I was so happy to tell her a lot of my friends were Eritrean (not that she what that was) and Kosovan and that life was good.

So, could you enlighten the viewers why you've written to him in this space? You could equally have hired the side of a red London bus for your message.....?
DB's lengthy and rehearsed weekend posts are much like our own version of Littlejohn's or Clarkson's newspaper columns....I think more meant to be read, digested and commented on at will than necessarily taken too literally or seriously.

I think that taking them as a little piquant morsel to spice up our Sunday morning EF diet, rather than a Crimewatch reconstruction is probably best. In my charitable moments, I think of it as a little service to our community.

(I have less charitable moments too when I agree with you though.....but I'm working to become a better person )

Re: An open letter to a racist Brit

Nil here is what happened. We are sitting on a wall by the lake behind Grumpy's stall - having a chat and getting to know each other. Then these 2 guys (around 60 years old) walk over and start chatting. So I ask them if they are EF'ers and they say no. Asked one of the guys where he came from in UK - and he told me and I replied that we lived there for a few years.
His reply was -'well you wouldn't like to go there now- not a white person in sight, all full of Pakis' - and he just walked away. We were stunned. Only a few of us witnessed this btw.
Too late to take him on - and anyway we were having such a lovely day- I wasn't going to allow that man to ruin our day.

A few years ago French fascist leader Le Pen got through to the second round of the French Presidential elections (run off against Jaques Chirac, 2002). Spoke to a close relative about it who told me "yeah, heard about that. he seems very good, perhaps we need someone like that in the UK".

Had to remind the person that I was a foreigner (the 'right' type of foreigner), and that in the unlikely event that Le Pen did win, then I would be leaving the country prompto...

i wonder if the swiss say/will be saying the same thing about switzerland and the number of foreigners here. as the economy worsens, nationalism and anti-foreigner sentiment will rise.

Should have told him to his face; writing an open response because you were scared or embarrassed at the time is a bit of a lame retort and rather pointless don't you think?

If someone's behavior is poor in public, let them know about it in public.

Insulting words back on this forum echo of "should have, wished I'd.....".
I totally agree.

It is like flipping the finger at some a$$ who did something stupid in traffic...... but when he is out of sight and you are safe.

Useless.

No can do. Switzerland is treating me far too well these days.

But if it helps, I'll meet him in an agreed location and do something especially insulting to ensure he is more disgusted than ever.

A similar, though not quite as harsh, comment was made to me some time ago, in the UK. At the time, I wa a bit taken aback ( at the time I was trying to listen to my host whilst trying to walk slower so that I could admire all the beautiful silk sari's in the shop windows)

Thinking back, I think the comment was not really well expressed - rather that I was talking with someone who was settled in his ways, and a bit (or very) bewildered and uncertain of the changes that were happening to the community he had lived in for most of his sixty years. Change can be downright scary to some people, especially if they do not understand the reasons for the change, nor have any understanding of ( in this case) the cultural needs of the immigrants. And unless one has had the experience and learnt the skills of analysing feelings and being able to verbalise them accurately, then those tactless comments are going to continue to be made.

Compare it with something along the lines of: "You may find a lot of changes if you go back now. The area has diversified and altered a lot in the last few years, with the settlement of people from other countries. " Interpret the "You won't like it" as being " I am finding it hard to cope with the changes."

Which probably is not that much different from all the post of this forum that are critical of Swiss traditions, habits and ways of dealing with things that are different from what "we" are used to.

The sun is shining. Enjoy this lovely Sunday everyone.

And would you blame them if they do....I meant, isn't this a natural consequence when things start turning sour for the locals? The hatches are battened down, ranks closed and the blame is then passed on to the foreigners. In spite of things not being anywhere near panic mode here in CH, aren't we seeing certain parties whipping up such sentiments against the foreigners for a while already?

Focusing in on the important topic here: salt on celery??? I've always preferred tomato ketchup.

I saw you talking to those guys, but I didn't realise they'd said that. I definitely would have said something if I'd heard, but I'm sure they would have rolled their eyes and called me a silly, idealistic liberal because of my age (even though I wouldn't even describe myself as liberal). What a couple of dickheads.

I'd love to, but I didn't catch his name.

Like I said before - I meet his kind all the time in Cyprus, and you sort of expect it when you meet the expats there, so you can judge the situtation and react appropriately, but this all happened so quickly it took me a moment to realise what he was actually saying. By the time the penny had dropped, he'd wandered off.

I realise it's too late to let him know what I thought of him, but I don't doubt for a minute that there are more of his kind on the English Forum, so I thought I ought to give them a heads-up.

It's only fair, after all. One wouldn't want to be unsporting about these things...
I don't undertstand why you are using Cyprus as an example of racial intolerance - after all, the island has been divided between the Turks and the Greeks for over 30 years - perhaps you lived there in a previous existence?

You have the status of "forum legend" - based on your post, I have difficulty in understanding why. Perhaps you could enlighten me?

The status of forum legend is purely based on post count and doesn't take quality of posting into account.

Although I do find DB's quality of posting to be very good and worthy of the title.

Re: An open letter to a racist Brit

Such vitriol from a small number of posters on such a sunny Sunday. I do hope something vaguely important crops up in their lives to distract their attention.

Did anyone really think that this open letter was directed at someone specific? Or might it have been written to get a general point across?

What does it matter whether DB had the one-sided conversation to which he refers? So what if he didn't respond directly, at the time? It looks to me like he's achieved just what he wanted to achieve -- he has brought the issue of racism in expatriate Britons to the general attention of all at EF and got us to think about it. OK, I've thought about it.

Now I'm off for a walk and an ice cream.

I could only hazard a guess: I don't think his comments had anything to do with the native Cypriots but perhaps referred to the whole lot of Brit expats who clamour there because of the warmer weather?

Re: An open letter to a racist Brit

FFS - get a grip every. So one guy with "thick as pigshit" views upsets the OP. Is this viral trolling?

Oh , and they happened to be British.

Do you know what , I have far more racist behaviour from Swiss ( esp middle class swiss) than I have every seen in the UK. Nobody would ever use the "n" word openly in the work environment in the UK. Here - well, it seems to be part of the culture

There are extremes everywhere - it has bugger all to do with nationality and everything to do with education and open mindedness
