Ahhhh ... you get this in almost every corner of the planet. Drives me crazy.

A similar effect are those idiots riding up or down the escalator (for those who use a different word: them moving stairs), when they arrive at the end they don't move away, they just stand there and take in the scenery. When you shove them out of the way - sometimes you have to, loads of people piling up behind them - they get all huffy and puffy.

Also to be encountered in every corner of the planet. I think it's a human thing

Re: Asian tourists - rather "clumpsy" people?

Ok, having recently moved to Asia, I can solve some riddles here from the opposite perspective:

a) yes, you simply put your basket full of stuff on the belt at the cashier here. The cashier will take your stuff out of your basket and put it in plastic bags for you. And - hold on to your seat - those bags are for FREE! Can you imagine...
I obviously didn't know, so I put all my stuff there and looked for a place for my empty basket - only to be told by the cashier to hand it over to her. I bet she thought "stupid Europeans"...

b) here, you hand over your credit card to the cashier. You do so with both hands, that's a sign of respect. The cashier will take care of it for your. That's called "service" - something uncommon in Switzerland. I obviously tried to slam it into the credit card machine myself which raised an eyebrow or two in the line behind me...

In short: Just because you are ignorant of their culture does not make them stupid.

That's a bit strong. I think it is more "people in a supermarket anywhere in the world" behaviour.
Supermarkets can be so confusing because they look the same all over the world so you think you know what you're doing, but then you don't. In some countries you can't weigh the vegetables yourself but the cashier does it for you. Try that in Switzerland and the cashier won't find it funny. In some countries they have people to pack your bags for you. That drives me crazy for example as I don't want my stuff packed in bags but in my rucksack and I don't want any shop assistants touching my rucksack. In some countries you can't buy alcohol on certain days or at certain hours, but they don't tell you until you reach the checkout, and then they even have the cheek to make you put it back yourself (this is called service and that country is broadly praised for being so service-oriented). In Spain they don't like it when you bring your own bags but you have to leave them in lockers by the entrance. But then if you want a bag from teh store you still pay for it so you can hold up the queue while you go and retrieve your own.

Each country's supermarkets have their own way of being inefficient.

You're so racist!!
Yes I know.

Unfortunately, somehow or other, despite my best intentions, I just cannot somehow see a person without recognising what country they come from! Or if we get talking, to ask which country they come from?

I am so annoyed that I now know that my one daughter-in-law is Iranian, that I have 5 American grandchildren, my granny was Irish, and she married a German! And then I find out that my great great great paternal grandfather was an Indian!

I am SO full of racial thingies! Perhaps there is something wrong with my brain that I keep receiving these racial identifications from outside sources?

Perhaps Switzerland should insitute a Banning Of All Racial Recognition?
If you walk on 2 legs you are human
And if you walk on 4 legs you are an animal.
Then life would be so much simpler.

And while they`re at it, they could banish all international boundaries? .... And we can all just live where we want to and wonder all over the planet?

And pay no taxes, and just receive benefits?

The Asian supermarkets in Basel that I frequent weigh your vegetables for you. The Avia garage near home takes your credit/debit card away from you. It's not just in other countries.

Nah, the best thing about a trolley is that you can leave it somewhere blocking an aisle and then quietly get another. If it's a trolley that takes a coin deposit you can lock it onto somebody else's trolley when they're not looking and slip away quietly.

Re: Asian tourists - rather "clumpsy" people?

I remember the first time I bought produce in Switzerland. I didn't weigh or label anything. I showed up at the cash register and had started bagging my groceries (that part I was prepared for). But when I looked up, the cashier had disappeared and everyone else in the line was glaring at me. I was really confused by that.

When the cashier came back, all huffy and grumbly, she had all of my produce in a basket, labeled, and then she scanned it.

*facepalm* Oh!!!!!!!!!!Weird Swiss.

P.S. I'm not Asian.

Re: Asian tourists - rather "clumpsy" people?

Swedish people are so funny first there is the swedish muppet who talks in a la de dah way and represents all swedish people on how they talk.

Then you are astounded that they stand and stare at alcohol which you can find in COOP -for hours they stand there just looking at the alcohol because in Sweden they have to go to a special shop to buy alcohol.

Its amazing that they can stand anyone who is different looking as they tried to clone a superior race by forcing thousands of invalid and handicapped people to become sterilised so they wouldnt have to look at anyone different.

It is also amazing on how they used to around especially in Lapland and cut of the heads of the Saami people and then measure the skulls and make scientific findings that the Saami were not human. I am not racist by the way against Swedish but they are funny hahaha!

Re: Asian tourists - rather "clumpsy" people?

Suggest the original poster goes to japan and goes shopping at the local supermarket. Appart from the amazing food they have there, youd probably be just as lost. When i was last there, the only shop i saw any caucasians in was the 100yen shop, not sure if it because they are poor, or because they havent worked out how to pay odd amounts. Grocery shops r probably one of the crapper experiences for tourists. When I first visited switzerland I as a right plonker in shops - not knowing to tag my veg before taking it to the checkout, falling over in astonishment at the prices and then getting to the checkout with an overly apologetic manner as I use my fresh-from-the-machine 200 chuffs note to buy 7.65 francs of wooden sandwich.

Now when I'm abroad I have the same but opposite problems, will the card reader accept a 6-digit Swiss pin? Except I speak english, so I can ask

I was wondering about that one, didn't know the word... they sure aren't clumsy, but I must admit that Asian tourists tend to clump as you hardly find them in groups smaller than 30. So if clumpsy is the matching adjective meaning "being part of an Asian tourist cluster"...

Re: Asian tourists - rather "clumpsy" people?

It's threads like this that make me feel like not bothering checking new posts on the EF.

We're all blooming tourists somewhere and we will all look stupid and annoying somewhere. The irritations you have with whatever country you are living with that isn't where you were originally from, well guess what in your own country you don't have to deal with immigration, changing your driving license and so on so of course it seems nicer.

Can't take it anymore, must find some mountain in Switzerland where I can go outside and may be sometime.

I find that Swedish people (especially guys) constantly monitor my every move at the cash desk when I am paying for my goods. It's creepy and makes me really uncomfortable.

PS - can anyone help me make a payment with my credit card..?
