Re: Let's rant: Romanians in the streets

just as a personal aside ....

I used to give the odd franc or two to beggars here on the street until the day I got pick-pocketed by two guys I perhaps wrongly referred to as "filthy stinking Roma" ..... my apologies for the term but those ARE the words I used.

however Roma or not since that day I wouldnt piss on a beggar on the street if they were on fire let alone throw them a centime.

Pffftttt... just spat my morning Earl Grey over my keyboard. Last time that happened was 1773 and look at the mess that created.

I shall be aggressively begging you to replace the keyboard when we next meet...

I also agree with you. So far, what you've described it did not happen to me neither in Zurich, nor elsewhere in CH. Honestly.
Instead, I've experienced it back home, you should have heard the curses..yes, it is annoying.
But let's just not give the OP the merit of signalling the discomfort of aggressive begging, when in fact he bashed all the Romanians alike.
The absence of beggars in Zürich really struck me when I visited the city this summer. They`re everywhere in Lausanne, you even find them in the residential areas.

if I had no other means to feed my children or my family I would beg (more or less aggressively, according to the success rate), steal, prostitute myself and indulge in any sort of fraudulent activity which could keep them alive and wouldn't involve physical violence.

so, until I know the story behind a behaviour that's bothering me - as a well fed citizen with lovely well fed children who have all the chances in the world - I prefer not to judge, despise or insult a person who comes begging. I simply kindly but firmly refuse.

tomorrow it could be me - or you.
The punchline is that here, it would be really really difficult for that to happen. Unless you wanted to beg.

That's the tragedy with the organized Roma gangs, they prey on the sympathies of people who think "that could be me one day". Switzerland has one hell of a social safety net, there is plenty of help for people who fall on hard times and need to get back on their feet. No one has to beg in this country, and what the Roma gangs are doing is shameful. It's unfortunate that the OP presented this thread in such a way that the point was lost.

Re: A rant about beggars ( Lausanne and probably elsewhere in CH )

Next time somebody begs for money offer to buy them a meal, or if they need money for the bus/train offer to go to the ticket machine and buy them a ticket - they will back out immediately.

The latest thing I saw on TV are people from- well let's say Eastern Europe - who you find on highways. They will tell you a heartbreaking story about how they have run out of money and gas and they would sell you their solid gold jewellery for 50 bucks, counting on the greed of us to make a bargain but of course the jewellery isn't worth anything.

Re: Let's rant: Romanians in the streets

my point was clearly that I do NOT give them money because I realise that in the long run this is not going to help and that the money will go to their exploiters. but I do sympathise from a human point of view and I don't see that I should feel ashamed for that. I honestly think that it doesn't take much to make you poor: illness, losing your job, bad luck in general... any material goods you have can be taken from you any moment. you have no god given right to wealth or a good life.

anyway, I'd rather spend an hour of my life with a beggar than with someone who insults and despises others who are obviously less fortunate than him.

Either

1. You really would do these things - in which case you are a heartless prick

OR

2. You wouldn't dream about doing it in person but think that writing about it on a forum makes you look cool - in which case you are a pathetic prick

Either way.....I get to the same end point about you

my criterium to decide if I like someone is always to ask myself: would I endure 1 hour stuck in a 2x2 m an elevator with him/her? the requirements for "him" being much, much harder to fulfil, of course

PS I'm afraid I haven't discovered how to quote more than one post at a time... but am working at it

It took me a lot longer to read this thread and its associated commentary than it does to say "no thanks" to a passing beggar.

Swiss screw tightens on beggars
Quote:
Beggars will find it increasingly hard to get handouts on Swiss streets as one by one towns and cities tighten up regulations.
Lausanne is the latest focus of attention. Residents there are likely to vote on a people’s initiative which has just been handed in urging a ban on professional begging in the western Swiss city.

Re: A rant about beggars ( Lausanne and probably elsewhere in CH )

We have 2 regular beggars in baden.

the first one is corner dude. He sits in the building infront of the trainstation. Does 930 to 1730 shift and has a pillow for his knees. at 1215-1220, he takes a cigarrette break and goes to coop to buy lunch. then sits and gets back to work.

The other one dog girl . She constantly appears in Baden and asks for money to buy a train ticket.

From those 2 dog girl irritates me the most; If you need to keep asking for money to go back to wherever you need to, then don't have friends in Baden!!!!

On a sidenote, whenever corner dude is away, He seems to be replaced by Old lady with coffee cup , or "dude who looks like he just fell and has a crutch"

Neither of all beggars is particularly professional on how they beg btw. And could do so much more to improve their income.

You could, yeah.....but he was advocating threatening violence, showing money to people and then throwing it away or even carrying it out (throwing coins at people).....I think that is worse, don't you?

There's a guy in Hardbrücke every second day begging for money for a train ticket. He usually goes with something like "Hei! Could you spare 5 CHFs so I can buy a ticket to go home?"

First time he approached me, shortly after I arrived in Switzerland, my reaction was simply "Holy smokes! Which country is this, where beggars ask money enough to buy a 12 beer pack!"

Little did I know...

Heineken Bier 6x50cl 12.90 CHF

Same could be said for that frail lady in Lausanne Gare - she asked for some money in French, gave her some but only to see her buy some wine at Coop City, underground Lausanne Gare with me

Re: A rant about beggars ( Lausanne and probably elsewhere in CH )

Question for the smokers: What do you think of being bummed up for cigarettes ?

Someone said earlier that persons of colour may be less of a target for being begged about for money. That might be true. I, on the other hand as a person of colour, get frequently targeted for bumming of fags.

Both being asked for money and cigarettes ( one record was 7 times a day during a festive season ) when done often enough, becomes an annoyance, and I had to resort to defensive methods ( hiding away the fags into my rucksack or lighting up way after existing the station ). What they don seem to realise is that when done to far too often, compassion fatique sets in.

What can be worse is when I am really out, and politely say so be it for money or fags, but the response from the begging person becomes a little curt.

I take it like this: No harm in asking, but prepared to be declined.

Wasn´t there in CH an ancient anti-beggar law that says one needs to have a min. of CHF5 with you at all times ?

Many a time I have offered using my time to take them to the nearest shop for food or even the SBB CFF FFS or police for help when I personally could not afford to, but all of declined

And I really wouldn´t care or know what permits or passports they carry - they are much the same to me. Not everyone in CH is rich! M;any are downright poor, if they only realised.

I've heard that too- from a Swiss. But what good is it, since once you spend the 5 francs of emergency money you are now illegal? You know?
