| | The Swiss Think Its Christmas Already?
So I went to do a bit of grocery shopping today at Migros. And LOW AND BEHOLD I find out its Christmas already!!!!
Why in Gods name would the Swiss start to celebrate Christmas 2 months in advance? I dont get it. They are selling all sorts of Christmas foods, candies, decorations etc. Its not even November yet. Theres a big display with santa stuff and chestnuts and fake snow!
I find this completely stupid. Christmas isnt supposed to come this early, is it?
Got me a bit worried at first as I realized I hadnt bought any presents yet. Then I realized its not even Halloween yet.

Consider yourself lucky. Some shops in London went all Chrismassy at the end of August

The UK is similar (I got some mince pies when I was in London a couple of weeks ago). However, the UK has Halloween (imported American commercial crap, without the fun American traditions which go with it) and Fireworks night between now and Christmas to take the edge off.

I think it's ace! We bought some lebkuchen the other day and it was just lush. I adore decorating the house for Christmas and it's something to look forward to. =D

Hey Zuger,
It's not only in Switzerland. I was in London over the weekend and the same thing is going on over there too.

Instead I have a week in the UK in November - and then 4 days in Hong Kong a week after that - yippee.
The bad Christmas news is that we have everyone at our place for Christmas this year - again. Catering for, um, 14-16 people.

Domestic violence increases. Road accidents increase due to drunk driving. Spoiled brats get more spoiled. Reindeer harangued into airborne mode schlepping consumer items. Need I go on....?

It's because Halloween and Thanksgiving crap isn't clogging up precious store space.

this is why Europe needs a holiday in November like America has. Keeps the Xmas crap outta the stores before it's too soon.

Why in Gods name would the Swiss start to celebrate Christmas 2 months in advance? <snip>... | | | | | Compared to the UK, CH is years behind. Maybe they are starting early because the year has been a bad one (economically)?
Many shops only break-even or make a small profit over the whole year because of the Christmas period.
Calendar for Basel runs something like this, lurching from one "celebration" to the next:
New Year
Fasnacht
Easter
August 1st
Autumn fair
Christmas | Quote: | | | | | The UK is similar (I got some mince pies when I was in London a couple of weeks ago).
