Just want to rant

What the hell is wrong with printers in this country? I get stuff printed regularly being in a "creative field". I was looking for a good local printer and shortlisted ten of them. I visited all of them to check out their setup.

I asked them to give me a quote for a project. Five did not even bother replying. From the five that did I picked the one who was the most friendly and whose print quality was the best (most expensive). Anyway this stuff normally takes 3-5 days to print. The guy got my files on 15th of August and I am supposed to proof/check the prints before his machine starts spitting out my prints. It's 6th and I still have not proofed anything!

I wrote to him asking if everything was ok. He wrote back that everything was ok and that he would phone me next week to come and proof the prints. "Next week" came and went. Anyway he did phone eventually at 9am and said if I could make it for 11am. I said I could not as I had a meeting. He said no problem and that he would call me in on monday or tuesday. It's wednesday and still no phone call.

I am really pissed off! I wanted to build relationship with one printer and not have to mess about all the time. I would love to take my business somewhere else but he probably has done the plates already (not that I have many good alternatives).

I am really starting to wonder what the issue with these local printers is? I have been highly professional with all of them. Could it be that they are acting like pricks because "I is black?" (AliG speak Really I think they feel that as I am a foreigner I can wait. Am I being paranoid? I am finding this very confusing If he is too busy then atleast bloody inform me!

Re: Just want to rant

I think that this situation is pretty typical of a seemingly apathetic approach to business by many organisations here. Often businesses don't seem to grasp that the customer pays their wages.

I wouldn't necessarily say that being a foreigner gets you worse/slower treatment but I guess that it will affect your ability to interact with them (unless you are really fluent in the local language) meaning that the transaction doesn't go as smoothly as it could and complications are more likely to arise.

Don't be afraid to phone up and badger them. It's often the only way to get results. Ignore the sulky attitude you are likely to get and just push your point.

Printers are always getting hassled by their customers to deliver yesterday - it's the routine they're used to. Perhaps because you've been so 'easy' with your deadline they simply ignored your work and focused on the Ad agency who're giving them hell for work which needs doing NOW! Follow Gavs advice and bug the shit outta them - you NEED THIS WORK DONE NOW!!! (The bitch is IN!) Really, it's the language printers understand...

Re: Just want to rant

Ok he phoned just as I was about to dial his number. Talk about coincidence!
Maybe his ears were burning LOL He was very friendly and apologetic so I feel better about my decision of choosing him. Still the local attitude to business is shocking as you pointed out Gav. Some locals just don't grasp the simple concept that keeping a customer happy = more $$$s in repeat business. Maybe the locals are just too rich to worry about loosing few clients?

Max you are right. I would have blasted him if the deadline was urgent. I held back as I wanted to build up a relationship with him and did not want to start on the wrong footing. My patience has run dry so I am happy that he phoned just before I was about to EXPLODE

Btw some of the local Ad agencies (the ones that still exist) get their stuff printed in Germany as it's lot cheaper there. Printers in CH have it very bad currently.

Re: Just want to rant

Will confirm that... CH printers DO have it tough. There are those out there in CH and over the borders that are cheaper. Not real quick though.

Bambi, drop me a line with your needs and let me see what I can do for you.

I will also confirm that, if you do not speak the language or at least give it your best try... the businesses can (not "will") place you lower on the priority list. I see it here between Swiss customers and Liechtenstein businesses. If you are not from Liechtenstein or have lots of $$$ then don't stress them

On the lighter side... in Greece, on the island of Crete, it is the norm to wait 40 days for anything. Delivery of this, that or the other... 40 days. Cost offer? 40 days. My customer on Crete was surprised when I delivered within two weeks... needless to say, I am on day 36 waiting on the payment

Scott thanks for the offer and I will keep you in mind. Looks like you do mainly digital printing? I was more after offset printing. Thanks anyway.

Can't speak for printers, but I'd be amazed if the service is better from companies in Germany. Google reports about 136,000 hits for "servicewüste deutschland" as against 161 for a similar search but with Schweiz. That about reflects my experience: service in Switzerland is about 1000 times better than that in Germany.

Well, I've got a photographer friend who uses German printers for all his printing work now. They're cheaper and give better service than their Swiss competitors, he reports. The internet makes it easy to send his photos and DTP work to them.

It has been my experience that businesses here in CH tend to be absolutely rubbish for providing good service. Of course there are some exceptions and if you want to spend megabucks with the 'elite' businesses who cater for those with very deep pockets you can get fawned upon all you like.

Why is this? Could be because of the 'special' economy here. Everything is micromanaged by the vested interests and sorted out by cartels behind closed doors. Competition is a myth for many businesses and hence they don't feel the need to provide value or service.

Re: Just want to rant

Gav, Gav, Gav....

Please do not generalize

I care (and strive) to be an exception to your rule! Customer service is my number 1 priority... the sale or job is second. Without proper CS, customers will not return.

Perhaps that is why I am printing a large Backlitfilm sign at 23.25 at night... because the customers needs it tomorrow morning!

@bambi - I have my contacts and am a part of a support chain for printers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Drop me a line with your specs.

Bests from the East side,
Scott

Re: Just want to rant

Hi Bambi,

I know this was a rant thread, so you weren't actually looking for printers, but since this thread will probably bring in lot of google traffic from people who are I just thought I'd link to this thread where we discussed some issues with finding a printer in Zurich (before it degenerated into a discussion about envelopes )

Gav - I understand that you've had some bad experiences, I think we all have. But it's not all bad. I'm sure that's not what you meant, but I think it came across a little harsh that's all. I've been REALLY happy with my printer.
