If you dont watch your stuff then why complain?

Ok so everybody knows that Switzerland is not the safest place ever and pickpockets exist here as well. So everybody should keep an eye on their stuff. Right?

Well, what i saw yesterday really pissed me off. I was in a pub with the OH and on the table next to us there were a couple of people drinking. Those people then left the table to get another drink from the bar.

One of those persons was a girl. Who left her blackberry on the table. Who also left her bag on a chair. Wide open. With her purse very visible.

We were there for 10 minutes after they left, and when we decided to leave they still hadnt come back.

So if i was a pickpocket and saw that i wouldnt believe my luck. Thats plain stupidity in her part i think. What do you guys say?

Re: If you dont watch your stuff then why complain?

I don't think it is stupidity, I think it is someone who likely has very clear morals and values integrity, and ideally expects that others will act guided by the same values.

So, not stupid, but naive.

I won't generalize and say that all Swiss citizens are this way, but I've noticed that many people seem to be more trusting here than my home country. It's somewhat refreshing, until something goes missing.

It was probably a Swiss hidden cam tv show, which tested random foreigners on the suitability on becoming a citizen.

I'd say she really wanted an excuse to have to go out and buy a new phone.

That sort of behavior really does amaze me. I remember seeing women leaving their bags on the supermarket cart wide open. I have to say, I've been tempted. Just to teach them a lesson of course! Sure not for personal gain! But I am always worried about the hidden cameras.

Re: If you dont watch your stuff then why complain?

False sense of security. The only place in the world I was pickpocketed was in Switzerland...

To me, what really drives me bonkers is abandoned luggage. Having lived in Madrid, where an abandoned bag can mean a bomb, you tend to be oversensitive to certain things. You also know that if you just leave your stuff to run an errand, the most likely thing to find on your way back is the police checking the abandoned things. I can get really anxious in places like the HB meeting point or the airport check-ins.

In the UK, those will likely spark a security alert and have the item blown up! I am actually amazed that there are lockers everywhere here, Ikea, Banhof etc. but then in the office, a lot of people just leave their laptop on their desk unlock or chained over night! at least I put it away in a drawer even if I cannot lock it!

I once got to the point of notifying security at the Euroairport about an unattended bag. Just as I showed them where it was, the moron who owned it came back. He'd gone to do a bit of shopping. It was unattended for 15 mins at least. I just wish he'd come back 5 minutes later.

I've probably said it before on this forum but it never ceases to amaze me that women leave their handbag in an open basket on the back of their bike whilst riding through town. How easy would it be as she glides along the pavement (because they never ride on the road, right?) to just grab it out of the basket?

She'd have ridden all the way to the shops before she noticed it was gone.

One or two tuck the handbag handles around the saddle but more often than not they don't bother and it is there for the taking.

Re: If you dont watch your stuff then why complain?

Here when I take the metro I often advise some tourists to close their bags, hold their bagpack in front instead in their back, etc. They are the dreams of the pickpockets and I am surprised how not well prepared they come here. I saw 4-5 cases in front of me of people who was pickpocketed since we arrived.

The only time I was pickpocketed was in istanbul in my own class while teaching. Some workers took my bag while I was busy showing something to my students on the computer. I went home got my locks change and 1 month later, they tried to break in.

Re: If you dont watch your stuff then why complain?

I'm pretty careful guy about stuff in my pockets and bags being stolen, and I've long resigned myself to the fact that you're just not going to get through to people who aren't. There's a caution gene missing. Besides some extreme occurrences, most sad stories from my friends have been along the lines of their wallet being miraculously teleported from a half-opened rucksack pocket in a crowded tram (which they left on their back while listening to music at full blast, of course), or phone being left attended for 10 minutes like you said.

I don't blame the victim, but my sympathy only goes so far in these cases.
