notes on door

Had a note left on my apartment door by my neighbour this evening saying i make too much noise putting my roller shutters down and closing doors! bizarre.
perhaps this apartment was vacant for a while before i moved in i dont know but one has to expect some noise when sharing a building with others no? ordinary living noises!

Welcome to Switzerland, make sure you close the shutters before 10.00 pm.

Fixed that for you.

I love hearing all the stories about all the complaining neighbours and landlords - it makes me feel very grateful and settled in my apartent, where noone sees to complain about anything at all. The fact that I found this apartment and had moved in, less than a week after arriving in Switzerland, makes me feel double happy.

Re: notes on door

Leave a note in his door, explain that leaving notes is harassment.

Write it as loud as you can, use a hammer and nails to pin it to his door.

its pathetic really. if the swiss have such a problem with ordinary noises, why dont the building contractors build sound proof apartments and charge rent accordingly?

Did you not complain about the person above you shutting her shutters at 2am? I did.

Re: notes on door

Not always, Total. The shutters in that apartment were very noisy. I complained to the landlord (and not the tenant, as it wasn't their fault the shutters were so noisy) who has since fixed them so that they're quiet.

And the question to Biff... (as we live in the same building) ... maybe. But it's in Basel

There possibly is one free. But it would be in the apartment across the landing from the one foreigner who is awake at 2am, who may complain about..... oh never mind, that is actually when he is doing his vacuuming

I assume that there is a connection to this thread, so it seems you upset ONE Swiss. Statistically, that's a pretty tiny sample. It's not THE Swiss. There may be many more, as we all know, but that still doesn't make them THE Swiss.

Please note that there are Swiss on this forum too, and most of them are here to help you guys, voluntarily, mind you. On the other hand, there are nutcases everywhere, not only in Switzerland.

Yeeeah, weeell, builders are just not what they used to be, you know? I'm lying awake because the people downstairs should damn well get some whiskey down that child and tell it to HTFUhave a toddler with difficulty sleeping and a strong set of lungs and I often wonder whether I have a herd of elephants upstairs. This despite living in what is meant to be one of those magical sound-impervious places that cost accordingly. I've decided that it's not worth picking a fight with the people downstairs for the sake of something that will only last a year compared to probably living here the next ten years and the guy upstairs, well, I just worry about his back, you know? It sounds painful. But I suspect my kittens (who are more like the size of a fully grown cat) having a wrestling battle royale down the hallway makes a fair bit of noise downstairs too. Ah well. Excuse me while I go hunt for earplugs...

Re: notes on door

I am very annoyed with people who don't know that a knob on the door can be turned to close the door too. Having a bit of consideration for the other neighbours and close the door instead to shut the door can go a long way. It is nothing to do with a culture though! Every single apartment I lived in in all the countries I have been, my neighbors seemed to have a lack of this basic tool usually found on the door to open or close it.

Re: notes on door

My father used to do night shift and we learned to close doors very, very quietly from the time we could reach the knob! Or else!

I understand about the shutters though. My neighbour used to wake my child every, but every, evening when she 'rolled down' the blinds in her flat above us. It's the noise when everything is (was) quiet which is often the problem rather than the noise itself.

I had to thank you because it is not often that people are so understanding. We have a noisy pre-schooler and next summer we are going to have to move into an appartment whilst we are waiting for our new house to be built. I am dreading it simply because I know as a family with small children, there will be times when we cannot avoid disturbing people and there is nothing we can do about that noise (particularly with regard to the younger one 's tantrums). I just hope we have someone as understanding as you as a neighbour (albeit that you are fuming inside!).

I see no problem with asking neighbours (politely) to do things differently (Longbyt and her upstairs neighbours' shutter shutting when her small child is in bed). Often the supposedly "offending" neighbour has no idea how their behaviour is impacting on you. But I stress the word "politely" ...

If you know who it is... leave a note on their door and tell them they make too much noise breathing and that they should stop immediately.

My neighbor SLAMS his door all the time. This makes my dog bark. I say nothing. And nobody says boo about my dogs. I think it's a win-win.

Maybe you could forward the note to your Hauswart and ask them to come oil your shutters?

It took me an awful long time to realise what was waking my youngster every evening at about the same time - I didn't actually 'hear' the blinds going down! I expect I asked my neighbour though when I found out as we got on very well.

Sometimes an apology with an explanation when one (or one's child) has made more noise than usual can work wonders.

Our skinny 5 year old thuds around our apartment as if he has the BMI of Homer Simpson so we make him wear a pair of slippers with a foamy/padded sole to save the nerves of the hitherto childless and very quiet couple downstairs. They've never complained about his thundering around but I really feel for them at 7 am on a Sunday morning.

Wish I could say the same about the family above us who even my son refers to as "the family with the naughty boys"

Re: notes on door

I'm on the ground floor, that means that any door slammers go thorough me. I don't mind as I play PS3 at late hours of the night and tend to get vocal while doing it. It's a trade off.... (just to be sure, I let anyone wash their clothes after 10pm)
