Wallet stolen in DPaM Rennweg

The police translator said that DPaM in particular is a very common shop for wallets being stolen. Just an FYI.

Re: Wallet stolen in DPaM Rennweg

Sorry to hear that bad news. It must be really frustrating for you right now.

What kind of shop is DPaM? Never heard of it is why I ask.

As I was walking around my local Migros / shopping center yesterday, they kept announcing over the tannoy to beware of thieves, watch bags and valuables etc.

Seems like a very strange place to have a high rate of wallets being stole.

Anyway, I'm not sure it's upmarket as the prices are quite reasonable. Or has my idea of what reasonable is been warped by living so long in CH? But I always find cute stuff there.

I must be in the same boat as I was quite pleased with the prices, too!

Since telling friends in my mama group about this I've learned of two other women whose wallet or handbag were stolen in that shop...

Re: Wallet stolen in DPaM Rennweg

I've been to that shop many times as well.

The only thing to add is that there was always a fair amount of loitering around, in part due to that coin operated ride just outside the door. Could be that criminals just hang there waiting without being obvious, for their opportune moment.

Think like a criminal.

Most likely women shopping for clothes for small children, most probably with the children there.

Level of distraction = very high

Makes stealing the purse easy.

Re: Wallet stolen in DPaM Rennweg

If it's a known hot bed for this kind of thievery, then the police should set up some sort of sting operation to catch the perpetrators in action. There's got to be something about that place that makes it easy for these criminals to pickpocket unsuspecting shoppers time and time again.

Are there cameras in the shop / around its general vicinity?

I don't suppose there are security staff in evidence anywhere either...

Not to mention the habit of just placing the purse at the top level in the handbag making it very visible. My GF does this, and I keep telling her that it's only a matter of time before it's stolen.

At this time of year I would imagine most people to be wearing coats. If you have an inside pocket I would seriously recommend that you use that for keeping your purse. It's not foolproof, but it does mean that whoever is trying to steal it would have to get up very close and personal, not to mention add in a very high level of distraction to get hold of it.

My personal feeling is that the employees are involved somehow. They were completely nonplussed and unsympathetic when I approached them to ask if they'd seen anything. I thought about telling the police my hunch, but it's just that - a hunch, and one that accuses people who could be (and hopefully are) completely innocent.

I took some time and thought like a criminal, though and having worked retail throughout university, I think my hunch is a pretty plausible one. When working retail you're always "watching" the shop, scanning for shoplifters (I worked at A&F) and looking for people who might need help. I wasn't offered help once while I was in there. I noted that even while I was shopping as it's very uncommon for Zurich. In such a small shop, I find it hard to believe that there are that many instances of theft that go unnoticed. My husband thinks I should go talk to the manager. After all, each person who leaves empty handed because they have no money is a sale lost. What do you all think?

The police officer I filed my report with did think it VERY suspect that I knew of another woman whose purse was stolen in the same children's clothing shop. Maybe it's worth putting my theory out there...

I am not comfortable to ask that question.... but could it be someone who works there? Who doesn't give a tool of making sells or not?

I was also thinking it was someone who worked there for it to be such a "hot bed of thievery". Shame the police won't do any actual investigation.

I think your husband makes a perfectly good and valid point.

1) I'd certainly let the manager know that you have extensive retail experience and therefore know the signs and what to look out for in such situations.

2) You've said it yourself already, but do be very careful not to directly accuse the shop staff of being involved. Based on your own retail experiences, I see nothing wrong with mentioning it as a possibility, however...

3) Be bold. Tell them this situation cannot be allowed to go on and ask them what, if any, plans they have in place to deal with this ongoing criminality. If there are none, I'd certainly want to know why not as the resultant escalating negative publicity for the shop won't do it any good at all in the long run.

4) Take someone along with you. Preferably with good German and English language skills, to act as an independent witness to the conversation.
