Coop Meat - They're at it again

A couple of weeks back, I bought a piece of roasting beef from the bargain chiller, took it home and put it in the freezer to use at a later date. Got it out last night for Sunday lunch, and noticed in the very small print on the label that the meat should not be refrozen - i.e. the shop had already defrosted frozen meat and put it on sale in the chiller.

I wish they would put such information on a large font label - as Migros do in such cases.

So if you're buying meat at the Coop - do read the small print on the label.

Cheers,
Nick

You can re-freeze.

Cooked long enough at a high enough temperature will make it safe to eat. Quality may have suffered though.

Re: Coop Meat - They're at it again

At Tesco UK I bought some mince meat and when I got home the label said 'contains fresh and previously frozen meat'. I took it back to Tesco and asked to speak to the manager in charge who couldn't believe his eyes either. So yes, read the small print.

BTW read the other day that sell by dates in CH are about a week less than elsewhere in Europe. So what is past sell by date here - still has a week on the shelves in UK.

Very true. Refreezing can cause ice crystals to form inside the meat, which will break down the muscle, leading to a mushy, bland flavor...

...But it is safe to eat.
