Religion will be the death of me

So as I sit here in my Bernese office, I look back with pitiful envy at my Fribourg-based friends and family, who are enjoying the feast of the Immaculate Conception from their beds and breakfast tables.

BASTARDS!!!!

I even forgot that it's Sunday timetable for buses today, so missed my non-existent bus and got into work later than normal. With a hangover.

"feast of the Immaculate Conception"

I'm not up on all that Catholic mumbo-jumbo ... is that the one where they sacrifice the Virgins?

Sounds like you just chose to celebrate Feast of the Immaculate Conception on Feast of the Immaculate Conception Eve, no?

Bank Holliday here,

Catholic church got it all wrong with the dates. What I understand is it takes 9 months of pregnancy and the church thinks it was done in what? 16 days?

Not surprised they think she was a virgin pregnant woman...

Live and learn. I had no idea it was a public holiday in so many countries. Certainly not in Poland, which quite surprises me. It was probably an oversight.

I met a virgin once.

Turned out the next day that she was a liar.

Pity, I kind of her liked her.

Hang on. She conceived on the 8th and gave birth on the 25th? What was she, a mouse?

Oh stop it with them Bambi eyes....but alright here it goes: I believe Mary wasn't a virign, but Joseph was. Mary was pregnant already when she met Joesph (whom was a simple goat herder and didn't know about the technicalities of sexual experiences) and told him, that it was a mircale etc. I mean after all, Joseph was a middle class guy..comfortable thatch, couple of goats etc. plus he wasn't an alcoholic or beat her like her last boyfriend...and therefore she didn't want to mess up her chance to live a comfortable life...and so the story went on about the imaculate conception.

What I find mostly disturbing...what is so foul, so disgusting about 2 people who love each other to produce a child? Why did Mary have to be the virgin one....couldn't it be, that Joseph was impotent and the whole world knew...but through a miracle, they still conceived a child? Ah yes, so many questions...

I can't say why this date (Dec 8) was chosen to celebrate Mary's impregnation, but certainly the actual date of the birth of JC isn't accurately known, and Dec 24/25 was chosen to coincide with a pagan festival and winter solstice.

I also once heard that Dec 25 was the birthday of one of the Roman Emperors, and was chosen because of that, too - but have never been able to verify this.

But all of these dates are a mish-mash, anyway as December was always the 10th month, until the establishment of the Gregorian calender, which added Julius and Augustus to celebrate those famous Romans.

Re: Religion will be the death of me

I've been well instructed on this topic by a Muotathaler religion teacher.

Maria was conceived on December 8, or to put in newest terms, she was "appointed/selected by God to be the mother of Jesus Christ."

Her birthdate is September 8.

Jesus was conceived on March 25 and born on December 25.

The Muotathalers know their religion and weather.

Yep, Mary was concieved without original sin. (Unlike the rest of us heathens, thanks to Eve and her penchant for apples. )

Fruit is bad for you?

Also, Joseph was a carpenter, maybe with a few goats on the side. Am trying to remember why people pray to St. Joseph? Lost stuff? Lost causes? I'll have to wait till my Saint experts wake up in the US.

Lost stuff/causes is St. Jude.

(Sigh... even after all these years, those 'saints' quizzes in school have left their mark. I guess you can take the girl out of the church, but you can't take the Church out of the girl.)

ETA:

And the apple thing... Eating of the forbidden fruit led to Adam and Eve getting kicked out of paradise, the Fall of Man. God (the OT version) being a rather vengeful sort o' guy, went for Sippenhaft - decreeing that all descendents of Adam and Eve would henceforth be born with original sin, to be cleansed by baptism. Mary, however, was exempt, as He had other plans for her.
