When I moved here, I decided that to get rid of accumulated junk, old clothes etc. I would come with just one suitcase and a carry on bag. So only things which could fit on the aeroplane without additional expense. At least by doing that I won't have to cart everything back when I return home again!
I did that when I first moved overseas. two years later, it was plus three boxes. The last few moves have been plus five, plus a kayak and someties a bike. :-) I refuse to buy a sixth box. I find the decluttering to be quite liberating.

Oh yes, I understand this. I have a wine glass that I got at a village wine festival in Burgundy in January 1980. It is absolutely worthless in money terms (it cost the equivalent of 2 CHF which included the wine it was filled with) but is possibly the most important thing I own for sentimental/nostalgic reasons.

It has moved house with me about 12 times now, every time wrapped in about ten layers of the softest things I can find. One day I will break it, and will probably go and throw myself into the nearest available lake.

would a bridge work? i mean, say you moved somewhere, broke the glass, and there was no lake available. could you forsee yourself hurling yourself off a bridge instead? or perhaps into traffic? or you could get all buddhist monky and self immolate?

im sorry i was just leaving ill get my coat.

Re: Moving sucks

I can still feel the pain of packing and unpacking due to the move. And I need to move again this month too.

One good thing to do is do label each box for which room because it will really save you a lot of energy and time for unpacking in the future!

All good luck with the moving!

Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to our move next week.

However, the process of moving - packing, making sure you have enough boxes, going through stuff and figuring out what to pack in which box, accumulating garbage... It all sucks.

And why can't I use a tape dispenser properly?

There, now that I've cleared the air, time to get back to yet another box.

Re: Moving sucks

Yes, moving sucks! I'm moving for the third time in less than a year and my advice is throw out as much as you can and then commit to buying as little as possible to make for an easier move next time.

Well, we moved. It was stressful but not as bad as other moves have been...just enormous. Now I have a gazillion boxes to open. I did label them, but it's still a PITA to open them. I have toothbrushes, towels and underwear, and we've installed the shower curtain. I also installed Internet. The pup is back from the Tierheim, so all's right with the world.

I'm glad to hear that everything went well! We're also surrounded by boxes, but taking a break today and we'll tackle them during the week.
It's funny how having an internet connection makes things feel 'normal' again...

Enjoy your new home!

Re: Moving sucks

Glad to hear it's all done, so nice when the move is actually completed. At least you're not rushing against a deadline so much now. Not exactly unpacking at your leisure, but it's not as rushed as trying to pack everything up before move date.

Our unpacking's been delayed as hubby broke his ankle just before Christmas so there's no chance of him getting down into the basement to move things about. Will have to wait a few more weeks. Suppose it will get done eventually.

Oh no! That's awful. Hope he can move about a bit.

All our stuff is on one floor, so I'm really happy. I have found some essentials, and for other things... Well as it happens. I labeled the boxes pretty well so it's just a matter of figuring out where the box is located. We have a lot of boxes.

Re: Moving sucks

Yes, he's on crutches and can get around pretty well, just not able to do any more unpacking for a bit. He's the one who knows where he wants it all (it's mostly his stuff anyway) so it's no good him trying to tell me where it is downstairs so I can then put it somewhere else. It'll be much better to wait until he's fully mobile again to sort it all out. Just a pain because we can't get the car in the garage at the moment for all the boxes/crates, etc.

Goodluck, and count yourself lucky you are not moving with a newborn baby who is terrified of the noise the tape dispenser makes everytime you use it. We had to tape up every box by hand, fiddling for the end of the tape and cutting it with scissors. Most annoying, won't forget that particular move in a hurry.

Re: Moving sucks

Ouch, ShaysLou, not good at all for you or baby. Reminds me of when we put collars with bells on our two cats the first time. One didn't mind the tinkling too much but the other was absolutely terrified of the noise, went and sat in his cat bed and wouldn't move for anything. We took the bells off in the end and he was happy again, but he really looked miserable for a little while.

Same with your little one - "Mom, HOW could you do this to me? Please make it stop!"

Ouch, that does sound tricky! We have a cat which at least just runs off and hides... Now I have to get rid of a load of plastic packing material. Guess I have to dump in into zurisacks. Without a car a trip to the recycle place is a bit, well, time consuming.

Re: Moving sucks

We're packing up to move right now, too, and it does indeed suck! However, it means we're only 4 weeks from moving to Switzerland and beginning a new adventure...which will begin with unpacking all of these awful boxes

The worst bit about packing is all the bits at the end that you don't know what to do with, the little fiddly annoying bits that there all of a sudden seems to be heaps of. I end up throwing loads away, or end up with several boxes of useless crap.

Then of course you have to unpack the other end, which is what I am doing right now.......
I put all those bits into a box and label it 'miscellaneous stuff'.

Well if the company pays for the move it should be ok.

So, unpacking sucks a bit too. Despite labeling my boxes carefully, there are always a few (more than a few) odds and ends that just end up in weird places.

And then all the crap. Wrapping paper, flattened boxes, and finding new places for things.
