Moving sucks

Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to our move next week.

However, the process of moving - packing, making sure you have enough boxes, going through stuff and figuring out what to pack in which box, accumulating garbage... It all sucks.

And why can't I use a tape dispenser properly?

There, now that I've cleared the air, time to get back to yet another box.

good luck, it surely is hard knowing that you will have to unpack and organize again, and remember it will be over soon

Re: Moving sucks

Edot, make sure that you don't overdo it
My problem is not packing my things up -but Mr S has thousands of old magazines, stacks of old bikes, hifi, books, etc - our last move was a nightmare carting all that lot with us

Re: Moving sucks

Make sure you label the boxes, which room they go and what they contain. It saved me lots of work .

Take it as easy as you can and gook luck with the move.

Re: Moving sucks

I feel your pain!

We're moving next week as well... and I have to fly to London on Thursday to hand in my PhD dissertation and return the next day, just in time to load everything in a truck and move to Fribourg . Talk about close (bad?) timing. I am really looking forward to mid-January!

Good luck with everything!

Re: Moving sucks

The worst bit about packing is all the bits at the end that you don't know what to do with, the little fiddly annoying bits that there all of a sudden seems to be heaps of. I end up throwing loads away, or end up with several boxes of useless crap.

Then of course you have to unpack the other end, which is what I am doing right now.......

Re: Moving sucks

Well good luck to all of you moving as well, and good luck with the dissertation, Mag.

So I actually have devised this organization system. Each box is labeled with a number, destination and contents. I record this in an excel spread sheet. But that's not all - I also marked each box with a big piece of colored tape - different colors mean different rooms.

We're having movers do all the actual moving, furniture dissasembly and assembly, as well as packing lamps, pictures and electronics. But we still have an enormous amount of crap. Our new apartment is a terraced thing, and has 2 enormous storage rooms at the back. So all the unpacking will happen in the storage rooms.

And thanks smackerjack, I am taking it very easy.....

But it still sucks!!!!!!

There, I feel better now.

Re: Moving sucks

Snap, Smackerjack, my hubby's just the same. Years and years of stuff which took us 6 weeks to move ourselves and then we still left a load behind in the loft. New owners were not very happy with us as they had to hire a skip to get rid of it all.

And newbee, with husbands like ours, it's NEVER over because you never get it all unpacked. Even if, by some wild chance, you can find a home for most of it where it isn't underfoot there'll always be some stuff still in a box or crate. It won't have seen the light of day for years, but it's something that might come in useful sometime so it has to be kept - just in case you understand.

Good luck with your move Edot, and I hope it's a lot smaller job than our moves have been over the years.

And the worst thing - my poor pup is so confused. All of her spaces are full of .... stuff. She's going to the tierheim on the actual moving day. Too much stress - for all of us.

Re: Moving sucks

Moving sucks. It really does. And it get worst with every move you do...

After moving about 18 times in the past 20 years, I these things I have learnt:
_label the boxes
_make a survival box, with the stuff you need as soon as you get to your place and stuff you might need before starting un-boxing). do not forget to include lamps in the kit
_clothes can me moved with their hangers in cover plastic bags
_everything that doesn't need to be ironed (eg pullovers, towels, undies...) can be moved in big bin liners.
_make sure you have both keys in your pocket at all times
_and, finally, this too shall pass.

Re: Moving sucks

It will be the best for your puppy Edot. We put our cat into kennels for a week while we made the move from UK to Switzerland and then she was flown over to join us. Boy, did I get an earful when I picked her up from the airport. She told me all about her stay in this strange kennel place (not her usual one) and then there was this nasty, smelly, noisy flying thing we'd subjected her to. In the hour and a half it took me to drive back from Geneva airport to Fribourg to pick my husband up from work she finally fell silent during the last ten minutes of the trip. Once she was at the house though, she soon settled in and had many happy years there.

Is there not somewhere you could make a little quiet place for her to stay out of the way while all the packing, etc., is done? We kept our cat in the utility room (her usual night time sleeping place) until the man from the transport kennel came to pick her up as it was better for her to be out of the way and we didn't want her disappearing out the door with all the extra people moving around the house.

Completely agree, although I had it easy as I was just moving myself and had a long time to do it.

I am just about done now and have got to the stage where the remaining chaos is in the cellar where I can safely forget about it. But every weekend since the end of October has been boxes, cleaning, more boxes, more cleaning, opening boxes and queuing in Ikea for things I didn't need in my previous flats. Moving is a really draining experience.

I am glad it's over, and my back is even more glad !

I made a "last minute" box with all the things I needed last in the old place and thought I would need first in the new place, diligently labelled in "LAST MINUTE"... only to find that most of the things I needed weren't in it at all, but in a random backpack/suitcase buried under ten boxes full of heavy books.

Why does this happen?

One move we had our dogs at home with us, that was really difficult, we had to keep them in the garden to keep them out of the way, and they were miserable. The following move we put them in the kennel for the day, and the move after that as well. It was the best solution. Good luck with the move. You sound ultra organized.

Re: Moving sucks

I remembered hearing that the 3 most stressful thing in life were: wedding, new job, and moving. So I Googled it to be sure before posting-

Looks like anything to do with being married has a good lead over death and illness, and those together are in majority over jail time and retirement in the top 10.

So suck it up and quit complaining!

Just kidding- good luck with your move .

Why does this happen?
Murphy explains....

My last minute box is a compilation of great moving disasters. Whatever thing I had to dig in despair in my new place, now goes to the the "open first" box. Things like hammers, screw drivers, bottles of water, cookies, tooth brush, undies, lamps, extension cords, betadine... tell me what went wrong, and I will tell you what will be in the box.

Also, I put in a couple of things that I need to have under control at all times, like a painting, which is small but outstanding, family heirlooms and official documents that cannot be replaced.

Oh yes, I understand this. I have a wine glass that I got at a village wine festival in Burgundy in January 1980. It is absolutely worthless in money terms (it cost the equivalent of 2 CHF which included the wine it was filled with) but is possibly the most important thing I own for sentimental/nostalgic reasons.

It has moved house with me about 12 times now, every time wrapped in about ten layers of the softest things I can find. One day I will break it, and will probably go and throw myself into the nearest available lake.

Re: Moving sucks

When I moved here, I decided that to get rid of accumulated junk, old clothes etc. I would come with just one suitcase and a carry on bag. So only things which could fit on the aeroplane without additional expense. At least by doing that I won't have to cart everything back when I return home again!
