Most of the people complaining are coming from two countries - the US & the UK...
How would you know?

Re: Anti Anti Thread

Some people are more adaptable than others. Most people like what they are used to, and find it very difficult to accept things which are different. These people in Ye Olde days would have stayed at home- but nowadays they are 'sent' away to work abroad, and they are the ones who find it so tough, 'cause it wasn't really their choice, and they therefore don't have the
'travelling' gene and mentality.

Personally I love variety and change, and always dreamed to travel, so things different generally fascinate me rather than bug me. My cousin from New Jersey moved to California, but then had to move away again, as she said 'because she could not recognize the vegetables on the market'. If I see vegetables I do not recognize on my market, I want to find out how to cook with them!
We now have a very different kind of traveller on the scene. Same with learning language/s. In the past (well maybe not the days of colonialism) people who chose to travel wanted to learn languages, wanted the contact with the 'natives' - it was what it was all about. For many here now, it is very different. And they moan a lot, poor things.

The fact that people complain about certain inefficiencies should not be seen in such a negative light but rather as an oportunity for improvement.
The clue lies in the word "certain". Constant whining and nagging is not very constructive, but simply tiring.

...and so are friggin ridiculous opening hours, overall choices of product "A" and product "B" across the whole inventory of goods, or possibly the ashtray cloud that I have to face every morning...but "noooo" let's just take it, because it's a part of being in a foreign land right?

The layout of the shops may be important for you and the ashtray cloud my disturb the health terrorists, but it's apparently less important for the natives, because they so far haven't done anything against it. The one thing I don't understand in this forum is that Swiss are often bashed for their lack of tolerance, but a lot of the members act exactly the same. Mirror, mirror in my hand...

Yes, because it's so cool to be in the Soviet 70s, while the world evolves, Switzerland remains stagnant. But hey, at least it doesn't bother anybody...until it might be too late.

Re: Anti Anti Thread

It seems some people are guilty of caring too much. If you consider places like Zurich where 24% of people are foreigners, how can you be sure that your average grumpy commuter or checkout person is actually Swiss?

I have too many good experiences under my belt to care about the odd bad experience.

Having said that, from the front page today, the thread that gets a reaction from me is Easyjet dumping Manchester. Thank goodness - Manchester is an airport I detest.

There is one big difference between the Soviet Union of Russia an Switzerland. Here borders are open, nobody is held back against his will .
This country may be slow in some aspects, mainly due to the ample democratic rights, but so far this slowness didn't hurt. At least we could avoid many errors the so called advanced countries made.

Suuuuure, avoid all errors. If this place wouldn't be under the warm and cozy blanket of banking secrecy, then those errors would be far more detrimental to the country. Forced aggregate demand, medieval retail and customer service standards along with banking secrecy cannot be sustained forever.

Perhaps not, but I much prefer this country to countries which have been forced almost into bancruptcy the stupidness of their politicians and economic leaders or where people not even can buy books without big brother watching them. It's all a matter of perspective.

... back home ... back home ...back home...
I think I may have stumbled on to something here. If one spends one's entire time here thinking of one's country of origin as 'back home', one will inevitably continue making these sorts of complaint-inducing comparisons.

Only by fully embracing the Swiss (and French/Alsatian, in my case) culture and making this one's 'home' will one finally free oneself from the confining chains of homesickness.

What else should she call it then..."the place I originated from"? "the land of my birth?"

Actually I write "back home" because it's shorter than "in the part of the US where I grew up". It's a nice theory though.

It's an awfully arrogant position to take, in all honesty...Most of the people complaining are coming from two countries - the US & the UK...Two countries where there are a massive number of ongoing problems..
More like "Two countries where there are massive numbers of English speakers". What a weird coincidence on an English forum!
BTW, if you complain about 'back home' as much as you think some complain about Switzerland, you're still a complainer and just as much fun.
