"the land of my birth?" | | | | | If I'm referring to my country of birth I would generally say "in the UK". Less typing even than "back home". Plus it has the added advantage of not assuming the reader knows where you came from, or that you're referring to a country and not a residence. When I'm in Switzerland and say "at home" I'm generally referring to our house in France, not the country I moved from eleven years ago... or else I mean our flat in Engelberg.

More to the point, it doesn't express what I was getting at here. My point wasn't that supermarkets in the UK (or the US) are easier to navigate - some are, some aren't - but that supermarkets in the country/region you grew up in are easier, mainly because you've got 20 years of experience to know what you're looking for. | Quote: | | | | When I'm in Switzerland and say "at home" I'm generally referring to our house in France, not the country I moved from eleven years ago... or else I mean our flat in Engelberg. | | | | | Yeah, "at home" ≠ "back home" for me either. Have it your way though. Your inferences about my emotional state were a bit of a stretch ("confining chains of homesickness"? really?) which is the only reason I said anything.

Back home, at home, away from home, ranting, moaning, not moaning...
Instead of typing your moans, come out to a social event and have fun! Or alternatively, moan all you want, but I can assure you that moaning is much more interesting before, after, and during a good beer!
(Tongue-in-cheek, but it works, hehehe. By the way, my "moan of the day" is for the people who keep posting apartment ads for Geneva...and I rant because I know that, if and when I will need to find one, there will be NONE!!!)

What I meant, of course, was 'fewer letters' | Quote: | | | | | Your inferences about my emotional state were a bit of a stretch ("confining chains of homesickness"? really?) which is the only reason I said anything. | | | | | Oh Lord, that wasn't aimed at you specifically, which is why I was at such pains to use 'one' instead of 'you'.
Still, if the cap fits... |

The concept of 'back home' does get blurred after a while. When I am here, 'back home' is in the UK. When I am in the UK, 'back home' is here. And this is just how I like it | The following 4 users would like to thank for this useful post: | |

The urge to complain is quite important, especially for non-swiss, since we seldom "can" complain to other fellow swiss without being grunted at...
I can only speak for myself, but I complained A LOT more back home than here, if things were better back home, I would NOT live here, quite simply, but just because I find I better here, does NOT mean that ALL things here are good...so keep complaining |

| | Re: Anti Anti Thread | Quote: | | | | | The clue lies in the word "certain". Constant whining and nagging is not very constructive, but simply tiring. | | | | | it doesn't have to be constructive...thats the beauty with complaining
people need to vent you know....otherwise.... |

| | Re: Anti Anti Thread | Quote: | | | | I think I may have stumbled on to something here. If one spends one's entire time here thinking of one's country of origin as 'back home', one will inevitably continue making these sorts of complaint-inducing comparisons.
Only by fully embracing the Swiss (and French/Alsatian, in my case) culture and making this one's 'home' will one finally free oneself from the confining chains of homesickness. | | | | | Even in Sweden when I lived in another city than in the one that I grew up in, I referred my "home village" as to "back home"...My son who is born in Switzerland, for him "back home" will be our village here in Switzerland...
