Maybe some of you naysayers ought to analyize and compare the physical attributes of Rugby and NFL players. NFL players are handsdown superior in speed, power and agility and generally speaking, football is a faster game. Now, I really hope this ain't turning into the a whole football vs rugby debate. Let's agree to disagree and put our focus back on the thread.
So fast that a 60minute game takes 4 hours due to the number of breaks they take!!

Football players are no more preened, over-rated and over-paid than Basketball, Baseball and Gridiron players.

The USA - a country that lied to the native inhabitants - continutally - and was then really surprised when Clinton lied about having sex.

The USA - a country that has more BLACK males incarcerated, on parole or in probation than were ever in slavery.

the British record on native inhabitants is less than stellar, as well. I suppose in that regard we are unfortunately quite similar, we are horrible consumers of other peoples.

And what's all this "Give me five!" or "High five!"

Is it some mating ritual? Why can't you just shake hands like the rest of the Western world?
Nobody high fives anymore. We've gotten much more complex.

I am ignoring the cars, the Brits are perpetually DQ'ed as a result of Lucas.

as for pollution, violence, police or CIA - I don't notice anymore, I live in Switzerland. the taxes, of course, are with me for life.

Lets just say that we are all a little bit cooked in the head. I have never seen a winner in the game of: My "insert thing here" is better than yours because.... There are far greater injustices happening out there in the big bad world.

Re: US / UK nicht!!!

Back to sport...
Americans like to watch team sport on TV, with beer and aforementioned local ‘food’ in hand. Therefore there are plenty of breaks in the action and only few people meet the minimum height / weight / fitness criteria to actually play the sport themselves. Not many like to attend live sporting occasions, as they are marred by the long breaks in the action.
The English prefer to play their sports, or at the very least turn up and watch in person. Therefore English sports are far more enjoyable to play and watch live - they suit all sorts of builds and require varying degrees of intelligence.
American sports are OK to watch on TV, but are not as enjoyable live. Most of the players are freakishly tall (particularly football and basketball) and very little intelligence is required – as they are told what to do all the time by the coach.
I still like baseball though, even though it's not quite cricket.....

OP, I am glad to see you managed to take the high road and didn't perpetuate out-dated stereotypes.
*(do you think he needs me to point out the sarcasm to him, or is that me making sweeping assumptions?)*
The language you use (and imply it's greatly different to British English) is merely missing a few letters out of words, hardly cause for celebration. Except maybe when writing text messages.
KFC is fowl, ahem, foul, but we forgive you.
I am constantly mistaken for being an American, I don't get my knickers (panties) in a twist (bunch) about it.
Have a nice day y'all!

we long ago adopted Naismith as our own. that's just the way we roll with immigrants, especially when they invent beloved sports.

Definitely disagree with much of that. The breaks in sports in North American have more of a marketing money making background rather than breaks to please the fans. Food and beer are also consumed at live events although NA doesn't have the ridiculous hooliganism seen in europe--pretty pathetic in comparison to a few fat slobs on the couch. Live events are commonly sold out except for new market sports so disagreed there as well. I think all are happy to play and watch their sport if applicable, no comparison there.
As for intelligence in a sport---that comes down to any game or sport and how well you can play it. I can say for sure, the amount of diving in the higher levels of football (soccer) is a total turn off for me to watch and belittles the sport altogether. This phenomenon also happens in basketball and slowly in hockey (from the lame-a$$ euro-players :P) but the players definitely don't whine, cry and PMS about a call like a baby--this is my major issue with football--and I played it happily well into university.

In the photo, the arrow points to Becks' left foot, which doesn't really count (at least according to George Best).
