Nathan's Famous History
Nathan’s Famous was founded by a Polish immigrant, Nathan Handwerker, and his is truly an authentic “only in America story.” He started his business in 1916 with a small hot dog stand in Coney Island, New York. He sold hot dogs that were manufactured based on a recipe developed by his wife, Ida.

http://nathansfamous.com/PageFetch/getpage.php?pgid=39

The word frankfurter comes from Frankfurt, Germany, where pork sausages served in a bun similar to hot dogs originated.[1] These sausages, Frankfurter Würstchen, were known since the 13th century..............Around 1870, on Coney Island, German immigrant Charles Feltman began selling sausages in rolls.[4][5][6]
Others have supposedly invented the hot dog. The idea of a hot dog on a bun is ascribed to the wife of a German named Antonoine Feuchtwanger, who sold hot dogs on the streets of St. Louis, Missouri, United States, in 1880, because his customers kept taking the white gloves handed to them for eating without burning their hands...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_dog

so how did this American invention get to Germany in the 13th Century
there is a Nathan's at Metro Airport in Detroit. I will cry when I visit it this summer when we fly back for a couple of weeks.

Re: US / UK nicht!!!

Much like most US vs. UK threads, it seems that comparing little differences between the two has turned into the latter whining. HEY! the majority of people in North American came from Europe!!! AND, they brought some culture with them, which saw some changes over time and spread with success and popularity in the new form! BUT it's still ours!

Guess what? It's not yours anymore, if anything it's slightly related to something your ancestors were familiar with. But you're not your ancestors, barely even related in any comparable socio-context.

The proper comparisons were like football to American football to Rugby. With respect to present rules, equipment, athletic requirements. Or with respect to food. The Hambuger or Hot Dog vs Fish-and-Chips or whatever. Or present language: "Let a flat/Rent an apartment", "Bum a fag/Get a smoke".
Trying to argue down historical backgrounds is fairly useless. It all has roots at some point in the middle east/africa if you want to get technical :P

No need to cry I'm sure there are other places serving better food...

Where's the love, you guys?
This is love. What better way to show love and affection to those closely related to you than to take the piss out of them, for lack of a better American idiom.

I groaned at you because it was honestly much more cringe-worthy than funny. And honestly "gringo?" That is just plain odd... No one calls Americans that except people from Spanish speaking countries.
I'm a gringo. Personally I love the word. After having spent a few years in Latin American, I think it is kind of cute. It is not like calling someone an Ausländer here. How often have I heard someone call out, "hey, gordo" or "hey, flaco" and it is not meant offensively but descriptively. Spanish is such a great language. So, me? I'm a gringo all the way.

indeed, the Lafayette Coney Island in the heart of the city, the Nathan's is just to tide me over for the 30 minute drive from Metro into the hood.

after that, it's straight down Larned to Jacoby's German Biergarten, where I will baffle the Mexican bartenders and homeless patrons with my newfound German!!!

I understand the historical significance of Nathan's....but I prefer Papaya Dog. I don't quite understand how some simple dogs and juice can taste so good.

Because Jews had been expelled from Spain and Portugal quite some time ago, and were exterminated wherever Hitler could lay his hands on in WWII. In Britain, where they survived, there are excellent bagles in the East End of London, an area that used to have a sizeable Jewish population. Wot grumpygrapefruit said, basically.

Any sport that involves guys getting into full body armour and then passing a ball around according to some pre-determined pattern is nothing more than a less refined version of chess. REAL men don't wear plastic shoulder thingies to run into each other - and then it's called rugby.
You wear body armour to play chess? Wow, I've obviously been doing it wrong all these years.

That's getting things into correct proportion. Like Ginge's location - Germany near Basel! Now everyone will know where Germany is!

(Just so that no-one feels the need to explain it to me, I KNOW what it really means!)

Are you seriously asking why there are not so many eastern European jews selling bagels around anymore?

That does actually meet my stereotypes of Americans... and I really dont care if you are from Canada.
