Do buses have the right-of-way over other motor-vehicles?
Only when leaving a bus stop.

alright--fair enough.

I once heard/read that Buses have right of way over vehicle-on-the-right right of way, but can't find the supporting documents at the moment.

Buses have the right of way if they happen to be on an narrow road where it is not possible for two vehicles to cross. On such roads holds the following: busses have priority before cars and lorries. Lorries have priority before cars. If such a situation happans on a montain road there are some further rules which applay if two vehicles of the same class meet: then the one going upwards has priority. However busses and lorries have still priority before cars.

You're right. I hadn't thought of that special case.

Re: Idiots who walk in front of trams and buses

I almost got smushed by a tram at Paradeplatz the other day, completely my fault (but in my defense I had made eye contact with the tram driver, he just had other plans evidently, like doing his job and moving the tram). I could see someone (stupid like me) crossing at Paradeplatz or Stauffaucher and not realizing they started to cross at the millisecond the tram decided to move- for me there is a defense to be made for that special kind of stupidity.

However, what I find interesting- since I am an idiot I need to knock people more stupid than me to feel better about myself- are the ones who cross a street not at a tram stop while a train is obviously moving. I was in the number 9 tram yesterday at rush hour and had two incidents within five minutes of people playing chicken with the tram. First, someone inbetween paradeplatz and sihlstrasse just ran in front of the moving tram (we all fell, it was awesome). Then, going towards Stauffaucher, a taxi wanted to make a left turn and thought he could stop and wait in the tram tracks even though there was a tram moving within sight, forcing my tram to brake hard again (we all got cosy, some people must have exchanged phone numbers after the second one).

I don't know, maybe playing chicken with trams is a byproduct of the me-me-me society, didn't someone say that further up? If so I cosign.

Re: Idiots who walk in front of trams and buses

Going back to what was mentioned before - demarkation of the roads make them safer. Museum Road in London has just has a £30m refit to breakdown the barriers between the various road users.

It obviously doesn't work in all areas - but generally the clutter free mixed use areas will have a lower accident rate than those with barriers.

The reason is quite simple - if you separate each group of transport (pedestrians, trams, motor-vehicles) each group will either feel more protected - or require to use less observation. If you are driving along a road with pedestrian fences you will drive faster with less observation because you are less likely to have a pedestrian in the road. The higher speed increases the risk of other accidents.

Re: Idiots who walk in front of trams and buses

Here's a thought.

In the high-danger areas, like outside Basel Hb, or for example somewhere like Farbhof, where you have multiple tracks for trams and buses, side by side, and it isn't always clear where you should wait for what, why don't they paint the areas that are safe to stand in white, or something like that (choose your own colour) - that way pedestrians will really notice, if I cross here, I need to be alert as I am walking outside of a safe zone into a bus/tram route?

Re: Idiots who walk in front of trams and buses

I remember a good suggestion in the Basler Zeitung to sink LEDs into the middle of the tram tracks in front of Basel SBB, which would flash just as a track was about to be used.

However, the (lack of) system there does seem to sort of work - in the time I've been here I think there's only been one serious accident, which is amazingly low given the number of people, trams and buses that use the area.

Yes, it's disconcerting and there's a massive amount of tram bell ringing and nearish misses, but strangely it does seem to work better than using some crazily complex system of lights and walkways and hoping everybody understands and uses it perfectly.

I wouldn't like to be a tram driver there, though
