Re: Idiotic customer rant!

He comes from a country where the bills all look the same and have the same color and size, and he's complaining about the coins being the same?

Somehow, you the shopkeeper, are suddenly responsible for Swiss money creation? Sounds like the customer may have been off his meds to me. You were much more gracious than you had to be, and very sorry you ran into one of the examples of a sterotypical "ugly American."

I frequently get the 10 and 50 centimes/Rappen coins mixed up, having bad eyes and being a bit self-conscious about visibly feeling round the edges of them in front of everyone in the queue to see if the edge is milled or not. The inevitable result is a wallet full of coins that I avoid using except on the rare occasions when I go to a public car park.

Doesn't excuse the rant, of course.
I remember the first time I saw a Swiss man pull a purse out of his pocket and pay with coins. A surprise. As a born Englishman I always had any small-change in my trouser pockets and the wallet was just for notes. Probably the real reason for the smallness of these coins is the fact that trouser pockets in CH are not often used for coinage.

Also, I think after 20 years, he should at least speak pretty good high German. I would not blame anyone for not learning Swiss German. Write it down in a book and find a way to teach it properly, and then I will learn it...but to make a language that basically excludes foreigners, I do not understand.
... I think that is the point.

Re: Idiotic customer rant!

The man is in self-denial. He needs glasses, refuses to admit it and blames the coins instead.

By the way, there are counterfeit 200 Franc bills being distributed again. Our local Fasnacht bars had at least two that ended up in their tills.

On top of the coin issue this guy has to get used to a new edition of the notes too (well not before 2014).

This is what makes me think it he's having some vision trouble as even though the paper money in the US all looks very similar, the numbers are quite large so it is easy to distinguish the denomination.

Sarel, maybe pick up some business cards from your local Optician and if the grumpy gent comes in again, give him one of their cards.

Well, I do wonder what is the historical significance of making the 50 rappen coin small like the 5 rappen. A bit annoying, but not much different than the coinage of other countries. The only surprise is that CH seems so careful about the paper money being easy/convenient to use.

fduvall
It's the size of a 10 ct. coin, not a 5 ct.

And same reason as the US: the larger value coins used to be silver, and the size is related to the weight which is related to the value.

When the coin designs were made, there were several different metal alloys in use, such that the nominal value of the coin was equal to that of the precious metals used. the 50 Rp coin, along with the 1, 2 and 5 franc, was mainly silver, hence much smaller for the equivalent value than the silver-coloured, but mainly copper or nickel, lower value coins.

Nice but strange. For roughly two centuries, the USA was the country to where Swiss people emigrated. For roughly two centuries, the USA was the rich and gigantic and admirable "sister republic". And now, relatively suddenly, a sizeable number of Americans immigrate into Switzerland. I cannot tell you how many of them are "returnees" to the lands of some of their ancestors. The question is relevant as there are 100'000s or a few millions of US-Americans of partially Swiss origin
I suspect that the number of gringos living in Switzerland who hold only US passports is actually quite small, non-Schengen permits being as difficult as they are to obtain. I can almost count on both hands the number of times I have come across other "gringos" in the Zurich area, and 90% of those folks hold Swiss or EU passports (their parents immigrated to the US, they attended university in the US, etc.).

I'd say it's more similar to the 5. Diameter-wise it's about half way between the two, but the 5 and the 50 have the same thickness.

The 10 is also just about the right size to look like a proper coin whereas the other two look like scabby little waifs.

P.S. Edges is the way to go. When my pocket gets full, then anything without an edge gets dumped in the pop pot/piggy bank.

There are a lot of Americans here in CH. But, America excepted people of all nationalities and races when people were emigrating in the early 20th century, especially. We are a land of many great cultures, and while it has made some problems in the current time period with too many illegal residents, we maintain that we are a diverse melting pot.

I think Switzerland needs more foreigners to inhabit the land. It is good that people from the outside come in and shake things up a bit. I know many Swiss people want to do things the "Swiss" way and would rather support real Swiss citizens...I get it, but we are all humans and the nationalism at times can be quite humorous to me.
as of 2007, the estimate of folks from North America (US and Canada) residing in Switzerland was just north of 24,000. right around 1.4% of the total population in Switzerland.

Re: Idiotic customer rant!

Although I do agree with his rant (on a purely logical sense), the rudeness of his comments are definitely not pleasant.

He should have known better not to every question or suggest improvements to the locals. It's well known here, if something is not to your liking, or sounding a bit illogical--you are to leave the country.

What "language" do you mean ? In case you mean one of the various dialects, dialects in all languages are the result of local linguistic developments and not "made" to exclude anybody. Nobody produces dialects.

Languages ? Maybe in a way. New Hebrew was developed by the Jews to make things easier, by streamlining and modernising an old language which had not been used in broad practice over centuries. Suaheli was developed by the University of Leipzig out of a variety of small East African languages and dialects, in order to have a language for German Tanganyika

Official language in the Canton of Zürich is not any particular dialect but simply German.

I when speaking about English in Britain do NOT speak about dozens of "languages" (invented to confuse Continentals of course). Neither do I in case of the USA
