Me and the RAV, a failed relationship

This morning I went to my RAV appointment to finally be told by my RAV advisor that my German is too good to qualify for a German course funded by them.

Thanks, Rav--can I call you Rav? Rav, my dear, you realize that I did that German evaluation back at the beginning of December. You've had the results this whole time. You lead me on, Rav. You let me think I could slow the draining of my savings account and get some quality intensive lessons. You teased me with the possibility for the last 3 meetings, even threw around a few start dates.

You wasted my time and yours. When you failed to send me a single job posting, when you failed to give me any useful advice, I held on. I knew I wouldn't qualify for payments, but you fooled me into thinking a German course was within my grasp. I wanted the relationship to work. I wrote to you! I visited! I rushed to fill monthly quotas! We could have parted amicably in December. I would have understood.

It stings, Rav. It really does. It stings especially because, just a few hours later, I had a job interview. I had a job interview where I was told my German was not yet good enough. And that's not the first time I've heard that.

Plus, Rav, this weather sucks. That's probably your fault too.

Brokenheartedly,
Embo

Ouch. Pains me to read about your experience and see those barriers coming up, and the way you've been juggled around.

You can be proud of your perseverance and continued courage in the face of rejection - it takes a strong person to keep putting yourself out there like that. Now you just need some luck (or a kind soul to help you with your german!) Hang in there.

You know, the RAV isn't really charged with finding you a job - they're just the gatekeepers for the insurance coffers.

Though I empathize about the German. When my wife first moved, having taken a single month of German in her life, they told her that her German was too good and that they believed that her actual ability was much higher than the test result.

So basically they have the order to not give it to anyone? Finding stupid reason and inventing excuses...

It might be worth taking a look at these guys if you haven't already:

They do German courses at a very reasonable price.
Might be worth a try.

Something like that.

It's somewhat irrelevant though, because the max is usually 4 months - unless you're particularly gifted, you're not learning a new language to the point of employability in that time anyway.

Do you need to have a class based course? Understand that some people prefer that but im happy to learn with my ipod and see it as a means to an end. Plenty of stuff out there to download for free.

No, they check your eligibilaty & that your really looking for work. They will send you on courses if they think it's beneficial. There is very little they can actually do to get you a job, however they are their to help & will offer legal assistance if needed.

If they think your taking the piss they will be on your back very quickly.

Well if you don't need it, or are not entitled to benefits why should they pay?

My German is very poor & they refused to give me any launguages course as I always find work in English in both Geneva & Zurich.
