Re: Fed up with Zurich

im new in zurich , and i already feel the same , zurich is too expensive to live in, and actually its not worth it, things are ridicoulsy over rated and not worth buying. plus finding a decent apartment in zurich is almost a nightmare its very hard to find something good in this city.

Ban-hof-strasse - the hof street that is banned?

IMHO Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich is just too crowded, too many people on it and the shops are not that great either. Then again the too-many-people argument goes up for me already quite quickly in most shopping mall kind of places, which is also why I shop when most people have to do their normal work and in shops that people do not frequent, no queues, no waiting for somebody to help out where needed and a much more relaxed atmosphere.

I unfortunately had to be in the Apple store yesterday (for a iPad VGA connector due for a lecture tomorrow so that I can just bring the ipad in a small bag instead of a laptop or so) and it was just not funny in that place. In those scenarios it is good to be a foreigner with a sometimes silly american accent, just act like one: walk up to some 'genius' looking guy and state, in English, exactly what you want, that also brings over that you just need that and that you are outta there asap and indeed in under 2 mins I was out of that place again fortunately

But this depends on what one wants to achieve by going shopping. I typically have two shopping modes: buy stuff I need (like yesterday) & window shopping. The first I'll be in and out in a very short time, the later will take hours and I'll likely not even buy anything...

I won't say that I dislike Bahnhofstrasse though, as when all the shops are closed it is an awesome street to walk through with quite a few nice buildings and the trees on either side make it quite interesting IMHO. But in those cases it is quiet and there are not a lot of people left there, which is the good thing

That said, Niederdorf is much better for (window)shopping and do not forget the streets on either side of Bahnhofstrasse (Rennweg and the little sidestreets between the Limmat and Bahnhofstrasse) and the other side as there are a lot of cute little shops there too, which tend to be quite a bit more quiet and have an awesome amount of cool stuff to offer.

Re: Fed up with Zurich

I find Zurich overall to be a nice place to live and work. I don't eat out at restaurants much, finding more pleasure in inviting friends to dine at my place (or being invited to dine at theirs) but, when I do eat out, I check with friends or other acquaintances whenever possible to find a good place. I've become used to the very slow service (compared to Sydney) which, strangely, actually saves me money (as I'm buying fewer drinks in an evening). I'm not sure if it's something about me (or having three kids along much of the time) but I find the service is usually given with a smile.
I also enjoy Bahnhofstrasse - but not buying anything (except special treats for the kids at Franz Carl Weber), I look in the window displays and marvel at people paying (for example) 5000 francs for a mobile phone (admittedly, the diamond-studded platinum case did look pretty flash - just not something that suits my style (or budget!)).

Yes, there's too many "H" in that word! Do you need that many to begin with???

It should be...ehm..."bahned"?

Hey, when are you guys coming over?

If it is nice we could have a board game event with kids, picnic and all, right by the lake.

That kid slide in FCW is so fun, it's fun to pop in with kids no matter of the fact one does not buy anything. So is the bookstore, the kid tree house saved us from a few rainy days.

I will say it, I like that crowded area, it reminds me cities I have lived in (sans the bump ins), it's fun to soak up the diversity one does not have in a tiny town like mine right now. Every big city has an overpriced boulevard, it's not a Swiss invention.

Re: Fed up with Zurich

I've not seen anything new in this discussion so far, right down to the same old names taking pleasure in applauding anything negative about Switzerland. And so no one will mind if I add my not-new 2 rappen as well: that life is what you make it.

It seems puzzling: the different experiences of the contented and the complainers. The complainers get stared at, receive horrible customer service, get insulted, see grubby streets, crime, high prices..... while others (me included) don't notice anyone staring, are happy with the way we are treated, have friendly welcoming neighbours, love the clean streets that seem very safe, and enjoy the benefits of a relatively high salary.

At first I thought, maybe I'm just very lucky with my neighbours (etc), but the more I thought about it the more I realised that it's much more to do with attitude than experience. Perhaps the country is so darn beautiful and efficient that my sub-conscious forces me to filter out the alleged hostility and the filth. I just don't see it.

For others, there is some element I don't have -- maybe it's their personality or a critical experience or a failed relationship or a miserable work experience -- but the country is first and foremost hostile and wretched and filthy, and so the beauty and the friendliness become if not invisible, then secondary and insignificant.

I've lived and worked in a number of places in Europe and also for brief periods in the USA and Hong Kong, and I know that nowhere is perfect. I also know from those same experiences that Switzerland is a lot less imperfect than most.

Re: Fed up with Zurich

Well, it is hard to find great places in a world of restrictions( Financial and/or political). If it would be easier , I would work and live in Vancouver or Melbourne (If somebody gets me a visa) , earn the same money as here in zurich (after tax), but life is not simple as it could be.
Shopping all over the world becomes the same (no matter where you are, Hong Kong or London), don't like shopping very much.
Zurich is a nice place, office from the town work very fast , taxes are low, weather is quiet ok over the year (don't like the summer heat very much, can't sleep when it is boiling), Zurich has a lot of concerts to offer, if they don't play here, i will travel there (no matter , because of the money you earn ).
Bahnhofstrasse is not the middle of the world, if you don't mind, don't go there, it is same with Rue Faubourg de St. Honore in Paris or 5th Avenue in New York).
It is all about possibilities, make your time here in zurich a good one.
Travel around the world , if you got the time and the money, visit places
like Big Island in Hawaii or Lizard Island/Australia.

Re: Fed up with Zurich

2 points came to my mind while reading this thread:

1. Please, stop saying Bahnhofstrasse/S bahn/Tram are crowded! Have you guys already been traveling? I guess so. Right. Have you seen how it is in Paris, London?
Now repeat after me: Zurich is not crowded.

Stop comparing your countryside to Zurich.

2.

I have lived in many countries and never went to a place where the locals think to humiliate you every day and only smile when they see your money is normal behavior
Unfortunately, it is true. Not for every locals okay, but damn, wtf is wrong with those who act like that?

Thanks, searching the forum for her gave me some interesting and entertaining results.

I am normally not into things that most people do so my costs when going out in Zurich are completely different.

Did I tell you I once sold a kidney because I love the Swiss so much.

This funny, I am not Swiss, I am an expat, who accepts living n a country/city that may have inflated prices and some annoyances.
The thing is I accept these because I am grateful to be here in such a beautiful country.
The high prices are absolutely necessary as otherwise the shops would be unable to pay their workers high salaries and they could therefore not afford to pay all the high prices.

Give me paying double the price of anywhere else in Europe any day.

Cheers,
Nick
