Re: Fed up with Zurich

Zürichs a place that one has to " rediscovery " constantly.

It's your own fault for being so shallow and just knowing the Bahnhofstrasse. Zürich is a lot more bigger than that and has some hidden gems for shopping.

Better not visit Basel or foreign big cities.

Checked it. The Café gets re-named into Kornhaus Lang and gets moved closer to Migros. No Optician really. Look at the details

Let's see what comes out in the end.

Until the end of May, the Cafeteria on the other side of the Kornhausstrasse

will profit from the change. I on occasion in the past preferred that one over the Greco

Yes, i totally understand and agree. What makes it even harder is that nobody in zurich wants to hear anything negative about it. Ever! Im a journalist from NYC and kvetching and complaining and comisserating is way of life and an important bonding link between those who live there. Even my friends in zurich who love nyc and spend half their lives there refuse to entertain any sort of comisseration aout zurich life. It's annoying and reveals a shallow insecurity about the city. Thank god France is so close so you can cross the border and bitch and complain 24/7, which is an art form and way of life there too. And when Im feeling deressed about stupid zurich/swiss rules, the insanely high cost of living, and the stepford wives social scene, i jump in the lake and eat cheese, the two indisputably best things about life here!

So you, like lots of others on here, complain about everything being overpriced but I am sure you like the rest are happy to accept the 'overpriced' salary at the end of the month.
If you don't like the prices move to another country and accept another countries salary.

This love it or leave it mentality is so xenophobic and lame. Complaning about things is part of living in a democracy. And not everyone makes a swiss wage. I don't. Do swiss people know that this is the attitude of super right wing anti-immigrant republicans in the usa?

You possibly compare oranges with beans. New York was for more than a century and still is a definite world metropolis. And if somebody outside NY sees criticism about whatever it does not matter to true New Yorkers . In Zürich you have a city, medium sized at best, which by a variety of factors with a population even including outer suburbs of a bit more than 800'000 people rose into the ranks of REAL world cities.

Just two examples
A) this one. Nobody asks why Migros terminated the contract with one of the best gastronomes of the place. Everybody simply welcomes something new. Alright. But possibly revealing
B) the airport. The chaps in charge, instead of using the timeframe to upgrade Terminal B as required kept it as a kind of entertainment facility until the capacity was badly needed and then in a kind of fireworkers brigade exercise in a short time broke the old pier down and re-built it up as required. I admit that we all with one particular exception, in writing of course, supported our dimwits loyally. Out of loyalty not to them but to our place. This is not how people in NY or London or L.A. would have acted, but it possibly is how people in Paris would have gone ahead ! People in fear of giving a bad name to your city.
C) in both cases, talks in private are very much different. And in summer, most agree with you that to do a swim in the lake is the best this "world-city" playing village can offer you.

nobody in zurich wants to hear anything negative about it. Ever! Im a journalist from NYC >> Thiis is the point. You by chance are a New Yorker. Anybody here will readily talk about negative things here with somebody from Stuttgart, Strassburg, Brussels, Dublin, Philadelphia or New Orleans or San Antonio or Shreveport or Tyler/TX or Myrtle Beach but with a NY chap ? never never ever

And a NY chap saying something negative about our so supreme place ?? To arms to arms to arms ... close the ranke .. foward we march
We might joke about our "largest village of Switzerland" (Zürich) or about "our Bundes-Dorf" (Bern) but in the presence of a New Yorker ??

A) the "love it or leave it mentality" is xenophobic but always has been a minority thing ... and is under heavy criticizm in the media and in public
B) People here are permanently complaining about things
C) the SVP corresponds to the (not only Tea Party) right wing of the Republican Party. But also to the right wing of the Democratic Party. I realize that you are from NY state. Ever talked with people in Texas and Louisiana ?

Sure, the DMN (Dallas Morning News) is a superb paper, but with its modernist-social-liberal views possibly not representive of the Lone Star State ... but I, when being there on visit reading their paper and when not being there often reading their online edition

I avoid the NYT which in my view has become a BabyNetanyahu propaganda outlet in a rather uncomfortable way

Re: Fed up with Zurich

I am fed up with the Swiss in general. Even to move out they make trouble. The worst is that they actually think that they are the safest and most secure place in the world but they parasite on you and your money nothing more nothing less. 8 months after I moved out they still have blocked my personal account (for 3 months without saying what or why and then for 5 months making trouble just in order to take your cash) thieves is what they are! Swiss is only a safe and secure place if you have a Swiss passport, for all others you better stay far away from that place and those people

To be entirely fair here, most of the expats essentially come here to 'parasite' on the money --as you put it :P

Re: Fed up with Zurich

One could make a distinction between being fed up with urban life (Zürich being the closest one comes to it in this country) and being fed up with some aspect of life specifically in Zürich, like one can be fed up with some aspects of life in any place of the world. I can understand both. But not when all *lumped together.

(*I mean German: alles über einen Kamm scheren - or French: faire l'amalgame).

sorry, but Swiss find lousy customer service, "non-gentle" manners etc as bad as everybody else, please try again...just because I complain about something in a country I moved does not mean that I should move from it...so please stop with the "take it as it is or leave"-crap,...

Every country has its pros and cons, Switzerland has probably the things that I value the most, but it doesn't mean that I automatically have to like everything here, if you do you are just a hypocrite since it's impossible...I have the right to complain and nag if I am not happy about something!

Perhaps you could learn first the difference between Switzerland and Swiss and complain once you got over this hurdle

Just to correct you, I was referring to people complain about the Swiss prices when the majority of the time they happily accept a Swiss salary at th end of the month.

As I said you don't see many threads complaining about Swiss salaries.

Your post looks like a repetition of two or three earlier posts of you

Nobody blocks an account without giving the reasons. If you feel that the bank in question is wrong, and the sum is considerable, take a lawyer

Safe and secure ? You have burglaries etc here just as elsewhere. That your partners believe it to be top rather reveals what kind of partners you had or have
