Some Creep Stole My Bike

Ugh, someone stole my bike from our locked basement storage area. Each unit has an individual gated locked area. Someone must've had the key since the gate was closed and locked. I feel worried since the same key that opens the storage also locks the apartment door.

It was a nice bike too, my Seven Cycles Axiom. Titanium frame, Dura Ace components, carbon handlebars, carbon seatpost, etc...

We'll be contacting the police and insurance in the morning. Our insurance is Basler, I hope they are accommodating. I advise people to lock their bikes even within the storage area.

Really sorry to hear about your bike. You should also notify the property manager. The insurance company is going to be asking questions about the keys. Do check your lease start report (I am assuming you rent) to confirm the number of keys you should have and be sure you can account for all of them. If you can, the next step the insurance company will take will be to contact the property manager/owner and ask for the building's key plan.

Re: Some Creep Stole My Bike

How annoying.

And slightly disheartening; lifted from a locked bike bay in the block. And a specialist bike too - chances are they knew what they were nicking.

Here's hoping the insurance company play ball and fund a replacement. Afterall, Dura-ace 2012 is pretty nice..

Obviously!!!

Also be quite careful, that storing the bike in a basement, often counts as a "stupid move" (ie the insurance might not accept that).
So... Sorry for the insurance "crooking" but I guess you should make it "nice" (such as yes it was locked there, etc...).

Anyway, that was "basics" of having a decent bike. Never leave it in basement, always lock it, use a very strong lock, never leave it same location regularly, etc....

very sorry for your bike but police wont even bother taking prints for "that" (they dont care).

Did you wrote the frame number before?

Re: Some Creep Stole My Bike

Thanks for the tips. My naviete made me assume that being in a locked room that my bike was secure. Though, I'm much calmer now. In retrospect, I'll take the bike theft problem here in Switzerland over the violent crime that is common in the US.

Look even that monster lock would need 5 minute to break...

Imagine in a basement, with decent tools... (especially that Swiss basements are usually old bunkers)...

Worth the efforts, 1500chf+ (depends how much is your bike) for 5minutes attempt...

Please don't consider normal to have your bike stolen- that is enough that the police don't give a sh*t!!

At least report it and try to check with the bike frame, etc... if it can be reported stolen in shops, etc?
Example in UK they have a "tag" company:

Hm can you come back in 5 days just in case someone is bringing it back to you?

(or *insert here any poor excuses not to fill the stolen report*)

Re: Some Creep Stole My Bike

I was very impressed with the police. They told me its a good chance I'll get my bike back if someone tries to register it since they have my serial number from the frame. They were very courteous as well. They also felt it was a crime of opportunity since they showed us how easy it is to defeat the lock on the gate to the storage area.

Re: Some Creep Stole My Bike

The father of one of the kids at the local school had a bike sitting outside his house. It was worth SEVERAL thousand!!! Gone. I thought that his loud complaints about the theft were a little silly...

Apparently there are gangs of Foreigners in Basel looking for high priced bikes.
