Aggressive telemarketing and false pretences

I just took a phone call from this number:

0412492496.

Not being in the mood to handle a telemarketing call in German, they transferred to me to someone who spoke to me in somewhat broken English.

She claimed that they were from the 'health insurance department for Switzerland' and were doing a survey to make sure that customers had recieved updated health insurance premium information from their insurers.

She had my name and address (yes, we are listed in the phone book) and then immediately asked me which insurer I was with.

I told her that I did not think I was required to provide that information. She then said that she could give me a 'comparison'. I told her that I was very confident that with the insurer that I have and that we have the best deal. I also told her that we use an 'insurance broker'.

I also told her that I was not interested in their offer as it is the third telemarketing call I have had in the past week, trying to sell me health insurance.

Can anyone cross-match that telephone number and tell me who this organisation is ? Am I within my rights to complain about their misleading claim. I am assuming that they are not a 'health insurance department' - ie. government....

I get about one a week of these. I started being nice, then asking if they spoke English and then telling them to f*** off.

Now I just hang up without saying anything...

How retro.."telling them to f*** off"
Why don't you just ask them to call back and go leave the phone and go to make a coffee when they do.
I NEVER answer my landline. (don't really know why we got it).
My OH can spin out one of these calls for an hour eating up their comms. budget. Makes me want to cringe, just listening!
Just think.... you are having fun whilst saving some other poor soul the misery you suffer.

You're right of course - it's just that I don't need reading glasses for the TV, but I do for the remote control. So having pressed the wrong buttons, instead of pausing the programme I am watching to answer the phone, I actually change the channel and lose the show altogether.

Then when I pick up it's the 20th prick this month trying to flog me health insurance that I just changed last December to a much better deal anyway - and out pops that sooooo retro remark...

A football referee's whistle blown down the receiver on such occasions can work wonders.

Cheers,

Using a trick that the police in Morges taught me when I reported a problematic call to them (see here)... I searched on local.ch for the phone number minus the last two digits, i.e. 04124924... assuming the last two digits are an internal extension number.

3 companies came up, a furniture store, an engineer and these people. I think they may be your culprits... based on a Google translate of their website.

You can find information about how to prevent such calls and what to do if you keep on getting them here...

I also found this link helpful...

Unless I'm expecting a call that might come from outside the area, I never answer the phone now unless it's a local number. I let it go to answer phone. If they're genuine, they'll start to leave a message... and I can pick up, or ring them back. But if despite that I do get a telesales person (especially the kind who pretend it's a survey or they're sharing information), I now say: 'Don't tell me you're just conducting a survey / trying to inform me... This is a sales call; you know it and I know it and I also know that I would be within my rights to take legal action against you because I have a starred entry in the phone book and you have ignored that.' They generally apologise profusely and hang up!

Re: Aggressive telemarketing and false pretences

I got a call from 0225087123 a few days ago - similar scam from a company called Swiss Prime. I just said "not interested" and hung up. They're not supposed to phone me, since I've got a * next to my name in whitepages. Another tactic used by Highfield Financial Management of Basel, is to have their UK office phone you. That way, they're not restrained by Swiss law.

Re: Aggressive telemarketing and false pretences

Old Mrs. Slammer over in the UK is getting loads and loads of calls from the subcontinent, they call all day, sometimes over 30 calls daily, she is at the end of her wits and resorts to screaming into the phone.
Sad thing that even after changing the number they still manage to dig it out after a few days.

Re: Aggressive telemarketing and false pretences

We had the same problem. I just don't have the patience for them. I know it's their job, and a horrible one at that, imho, but my German isn't good enough to respond to them.

We changed the number, and made it ex-directory, about 5 years ago now, and I'm very careful who I give my number to.

Never got a sales call again.

Ahhh, bliss

Re: Aggressive telemarketing and false pretences

I don't answer the land line anymore unless I know the number. If it's important they'll leave a message.

The worst was when DVDfly telemarketers called me several times on my mobile while I was away on vacation in NYC. Due to time zone differences the calls came in while I slept and they let it ring for a looong time. More than 10 francs of roaming as a result. They got a nice e-mail about that and never called again.

Yeah me, too, from the same Swiss Whatever..It is actually illegal what they do. I didn't know how to get rid of them and said I don't speak German, the guy immediately switched to English with a bizzare French(ish) kind of accent..finally I said I would think about it and hang up. The next days when I've seen the number I didn't answer. How cowardly.. Anyhow, the call from all sorts of places...last time it was a lady from (allegedly) France that wanted to sell me some wine..

Re: Aggressive telemarketing and false pretences

I had the one about health insurance too. When they asked me which one we had I said: Oh, I wouldn't know. My husband handles these things. HA Then she asked me when she could reach him and I said after 8pm. That was it.

Re: Aggressive telemarketing and false pretences

I just answer the phone, ask them to hang on a minute and then lay the handset on the table. They usually hang up after a couple of minutes.

Usually I do the same. But I was waiting for a call from a prospective new employer whose number I didn't know.

Speak to them in some unidentifiable, made-up foreign language. That will usually get your name removed from their lists, as they've clearly no way of communicating with you.

It works! I get occasional telemarketing calls and as I know basically nobody here, I answer in (terrible) Chinese, the way everyone in Shanghai does when they can't get a signal.

WEI!?! WEI!?! WEI NIHAO! WEI!?!

Repeat ad-nauseam, regardless of what is said (even if they reply in Chinese).

Re: Aggressive telemarketing and false pretences

I have my number unlisted. Dispite that I had a telemarketer call and as soon as I realised what the call was I hung up. The telemareter was angry and called me back and then hung up and preceeded to continue call the rest of the day. I had to unplug my phone because my husband was home sick from work and she kept waking him up.

If it's a Swiss number then trace the company and complain bitterly to their head office and to Swisscom and anyone else you can think of. With any luck you'll get the person fired as I would think they have records of the numbers they connect to.

Re: Aggressive telemarketing and false pretences

pick up say that someone else will take the call then put reciever to the side and continue with whatever you were doing.

or my favorite start asking them whats the date of birth, mothers maiden name and security question answer etc... they soon hang up and dont bother you.
