a right Royal ride ( taxi service in Zurich )

ok kids n kidders, who here knows Zurich and it's highways and by'ways?

I have the feeling mrs. and I got taken for a right royal ride saturday by one of your finest cabbies but not knowing the streets I'm not sure ( maybe a system of one ways ? )

mrs. and I were staying saturday at the Hotel Bellerive au lac and a taxi ride to the Viaduct cost just under CHf 50.-

The driver took us over the first bridge at the bottom of the lake, thru a residential area... along the side of the train tracks, then eventually over a highway fly-over near that new glass office tower (( tallest building in Swiss? "sic" )) before arriving at the far end of the viaduct.

so.. .what do you guys think?.. he knew he had out-of-towners ?

Looks like he took you down this route.

Probably could have gone this way... But the best way would have been to get a Zone 10 card, take the number 6 to Paradeplatz then the number 13 to Damweg. CHF50 for a 15 minute (max) cab ride is too pricey, I would have expected something in the region of CHF30.- maximum.

It seems high but the route seems ok. Downtown zurich can be pretty busy depending on when you travelled.

Re: a right Royal ride ( taxi service in Zurich )

thanks Doc, on leaving the viaduct we did decide to try to take the tram... but
1) being tourists
2) not understanding a word of German
3) having had a couple (!?!) of Pimms'

we got on the tram in the wrong direction... twice

It's not an easy system I guess, I remember the first time I was in Zuerich, I had no idea which way to go, luckily I stumbled upon some english speakers who showed me the way, considering it was getting on nearly 11pm

Forgot about that, you could have taken the S9 from Stadelhofen direction Zug, and the Viaduct is a few minutes walk from Bahnhof Hardbruecke which is 2 stops away lol

Re: a right Royal ride ( taxi service in Zurich )

Actually I just did a public transport direction search on google and it came up with it as well.

It also suggested the number 4 tram all the way from Kreuzstrasse to Schiffbau.

Which is pretty cool

He went the long way round fore sure! No need at all to end up going over the flyover which is the other side of the viadukt from where you were coming from. How long was the journey? I would say 5-10 mins max would have got you there. If you got a receipt write and complain.

The next one is gonna be the Platinum Jubilee Let's hope you'll be back before then!

Getting one of the Gemeinde Tageskarte is also a good idea, access to public transport in Zuerich plus any other destination of your choice for the whole day until 5 in the morning the following day....

it was a good 15-20 minute ride and no, we didn't get a receipt.
It wasnt really until I looked at a map last night that I suspected the Royal ride.

Re: a right Royal ride ( taxi service in Zurich )

I do not agree that it would be 5 minutes - especially not in traffic.

I'd have driven probably around the main station - but only because I know at what end of the viaduct I want to arrive.

In short: the route was not the shortest, but just half a kilometer or so longer while staying on the main road instead of taking the back alleys. A good cab driver would have done better, but it is definitely not a "royal ride"...

Off course he knew locals don't use taxis cause they know they are a rip off!! We make sure out of towners keep the taxi industry in the lifestyle they desire.

Only used a taxi twice in Zurich, first time was when I didn't know the way and second time when I had loads of luggage and on both occassions had a voucher. Most locals here use the trams as they are much quicker and cheaper then any taxi

I would guess that he realised you weren't locals, what with the union jack accessories and the air of English elegance you were giving off.
I've only travelled to Zurich by train and caught a tram to the zoo, the rest of my travels around Zurich have been by Shanks's pony, so I don't know anything about travelling by taxi.
Glad you found a bar to help relax you, and I'm sure the taxi fare was worth it just to see the rest of us EF'ers!

As the Baur is one of the fancier establishments, it may be worthwhile sending them a quick email telling them of your story. I'm sure they want to be seen as reputable...

Sorry, I thought you were at the Baur au Lac. Bellerive au Lac would also appreciate knowing dodgy taxi prices. It really shouldn't have come in beyond CHF25.
