Thank you for asking I appreciate

I did not say it very precisely. We are sharing dogs with another member of our family (who lives in another canton). And after i had conflicts with my neighbours about the dog noise they mainly stay there. We miss them, they suffer without us, but I did not find what to do with their barking. So, at least concerning the birth, i dont need to think what to do with dogs..

Just to reiterate. If there is an emergency over and above the normal - oh gosh, it's coming get me to hospital quick - then rest assured, the medical services will come for you.

We were a bit concerned about this too. We got a friend to take us, but yeah, it is a bit disappointing that something isn't available as a matter of course. Taxis are of course an option, but apparently some are a bit iffy about it.

Maybe a gap in the market here for an enterprising taxi firm: "Pregnancy-friendly taxis with 24-hour guaranteed service, basic first aid training and washable seats."

Re: No emergency auto for making birth

For my second child my water broke at home. I still had plenty of time to reach the hospital, but it was terribly messy. First you lose almost 2 liters of water (imagine the mess, you have to mop the floor), then your body goes on producing amniotic fluid, but as your bag is broken, you 'leak'.

That's why I advised to take towels for the taxi trip. I thought that a double layer of sanitary pads would be enough, but I got soaked through way before reaching the hospital

It's doesn't mean you're gonna give birth in the next 10 minutes, it's just very very messy

Exactly. Switzerland should provide helicopter transport for every expecting mother. Dedicated helo crews should be on standby (already in the air if possible, hovering over the future mom's house) 24/7.

Makes you wonder how humanity managed during the few tens of thousands of years before motorised transport was available.

Ok, its hopefully not my case, but I guess that before women used to die more often during giving birth than today they do..

I lost less than a dribble with one birth. Baby came out first, then.. er... the litres.. You don't "have" to play Noah..

You could also look at this in a positive way

Baby weights 3kg, water 2kg, placenta 1kg..
Extra fluid that the body "collects" in the last week, to quickly convert to blood, should you need it.. 2-3kg.

It is an easy way to lose 8+kg in a matter of days

True, true. I lost so much liquid because I experienced a full rupture of the membranes. It happens in about 10% of all births I think. And I repeat: it's not dangerous or worrying, just messy!

2 of mine the waters went just before babies were born... contractions came first... just as people said call the hospitall they will advise.. they masy ask you to come in if you feel you need pain relief... If you are planning a water birth I would advise to call early. I missed out the first 2 times and the 3 time i had 4 mw and hubby running with buckets of water to fill it up so could do it that time.. was worth it oh and I had my hubby drive me in our car all 3 times ..good luck

My other half drove me the second time and we made it with 7 minutes or so before our daughter was born. He drive through 2 red lights and ditched the car on the hospital's taxi rank at the main entrance - he's never gonna have that excuse again!

My husband suggested to call Rega 14 14... they will come get you with the helicopter and bring you directly to the hospital. Probably a lot safer and quicker than taking a taxi. Good luck

Taxi arrived, I went to hospital, gave birth everything sorted out.
Finally I understand what the taxis are used for in Switzerland... and why they often seem to be waiting around. They are certainly way too expensive to use to e.g. return from the pub.

I don't know about you, but I will certainly bring a plastic bag to sit on next time I take one, you never know what has been leaked there..

On a serious note, don't be mean to Zayana. It's her first baby in a foreign land, of course she's a bit scared. On the other hand, I understand her ideas about calling an ambulance, I think it's done in many Eastern European countries. Even a private ambulance service could do it, at least where i come from.

Rumour has it men used to give birth in those times. But then they took to driving.

I guess, they thought that giving birth was something normal and not an extra special completly new and unique experience that no other women went through in history. They most probably didn't expect to have the same treatment as heavy accidents or strokes, heart attacks and so on.
And they for sure accepted that midwives and doctors had more experience and knowledge than them.

And many of them happily died at childbirth because of unforeseen problems.
