I agree that Amazon are wonderful.
Last Christmas a whole parcel of books I'd ordered from them went missing.
They re-sent the entire order without further charge to me and, when the missing books finally turned up after Christmas, Amazon told me to keep them and I was able to donate them to charity.
Agree about most points, except that Amazon is a mail-order company and not a book-shop, while Orell-Füssli is a bookshop messing around a bit in the mail-order section ! For outsiders it may be the SAME (books--books) but it in reality are two different fields of business. If Orell-Füssli wants to participate in the mail-order business they have to separate that part into a separate division under a REAL name and in a physically separate location.

That's actually one of the most annoying things in Switzerland (and some other European countries as well). Businesses providing customer service on surcharge numbers only instead of using regular or toll-free numbers.
books.ch charges reasonable 4 cents/minute.

Amazon started out as a book store, though.

- I needed to buy some books online (SW books written in English) and after looking on www.books.ch and seeing that after a certain amount (I think it was 400 CHF) the shipment would be free of charge and that the books I needed were said to be delivered in 2-3 days, I chose to order them.
Economy shipping is free if you buy books for CHF 30 or more, priority shipping always costs CHF 6.40.

NO, the story looks as follows

2. Firmengeschichte
Die US-amerikanische Mutterfirma amazon.com wurde 1994 in Seattle durch Jeff Bezos gegründet und ging im Juli 1995 online. Damals hatte Amazon nur eine Handvoll Kunden.

While Orell Füssli was seriously established as a major bookshop for ages. Not just for a year. And Amazon NEVER had any bookshops in Europe. So that your comparison is simply rubbish

I am absolutely sure that the mail-order business is NOT done by those who are active in the EnglishBookshop.
So am I, but you're totally missing my point here. It's just that I would expect a properly translated website from a company which boasts about operating the biggest store for English books on the continent.

Exactly.

If OF offers an online bookstore, then it needs to provide the level of service it's competitors do.

If it can't, won't, or has no interest in doing so then OF should stick to it's core bricks-and-mortar business.

You unfortunately are right. Not only THEIR WEBsites but quite many WEBsites have lousy English translations. Why ? Because very often some bosses with a meagre command of English determine what is written in the English section. It is easy to boast operating the biggest store for English books on the continent as O-F in Zürich first bought (and destroyed) Däniker and then bought Stähelin and made something useful out of it. There is at least one English bookshop in Paris (Rue Rivoli) but astonishingly small for a metropolis of this size !

This proves that O-F still is old-fashioned and a bit dated in their ways

O-F only can do a serious online-bookstore if they seriously separate this section from the bookshop. BOTH fields have to do with books, but are completely different in the way of business.

Just a side-remark. Those at the helm of O-F grew up in the 1960ies, at a time when you only were allowed to participate in English in the 3rd class of Secondary School , if you at the end of the 2nd class had an average of 4,5 (1,0 min > 6.0 max) ! That was one of the reasons (not the only one) why I repeated the 2nd, and then could participate in the English lessons in grade 3 . My additional luck was, after having had a highly motivated Secondary School teacher in English, that I in the "KV" commercial school had a very competent English teacher (exceedingly boring person, but most competent indeed) and then in London for 3 months quite a good teacher again. ----> And what ? you may ask. Well, the old top brass, happily ignoring the opintions of younger people with some serious command of English determines what goes on
