Scumbag thieves

Just heard that the family house in Spain has had a few unwelcome visitors it seems. It sits empty most of the time since my now disabled father is unable to go.

So, some friends who went to use the house for a week and arrived today found that the house had been robbed, the front door open, and it seems they may have even been living there for a bit------nice!!

The thing that amuses me is that they managed to walk off with the 6 place dining table and chairs. Now this is a typical town house in a packed street in the old town, in the middle of a Spanish coastal town. Full of people! Ouf! And no one saw a thing. I think they were planning on cleaning the house out bit by bit taking a few bits each time, and were going to come back. Fuc£ers

Re: Scumbag thieves

Wow! What a scumbags indeed!!!

So sorry to hear about it. People don't tend to put their nose in other neighbours business, so my guess is they didn't think any of it if they got used to see the scumbags around.

I wouldn't know what to do except to call the police, which would be pretty useless, I am affraid.

Any descriptions of the thieves?

Re: Scumbag thieves

Same thing happened to friends of ours in France - they cleared the whole place and it seems that noone saw a thing

Feel really sorry for you and hope it has not upset the family.

Re: Scumbag thieves

No one seems to have seen anything, the old lady who lived next door died last year and some new people are renting. We've had the house 11 years and nothing like this has happened before, but since the new tenants have moved in next door, now this.

The roof terraces adjoin each other so the weaker spot is on the terrace so could easily have skipped over the wall and broken the lock on the patio doors.

The new neighbour has Marijuana plants growing up there so things have changed a bit.

Yes, Spanish police are a bit useless, we called them this morning and still no one has been. Grrrrr

Re: Scumbag thieves

I don't know where is the apartment but if it is close to me, let me know if I can help.

I guess the lock on the terrace was broken, so it leaves little possibility from where they came from.

When was the last time someone was there?

Re: Scumbag thieves

The neighbours are just as likely to be the thieves (both times my parent's house was broken into it was from the outgoing tenants in an adjacent house)...

Sorry for your loss...

Not surprising given the current rate of unemployment, lack of perspectives and generally bleak outlook for many Spanish people in the present political climate.

Am not condoning this but am sure that holiday homes that are empty for a large part of the year will increasingly become targets for theft, the homeless, vagabonds, squatters etc.

My finca is also 1 hour south of Valencia.
This does concern me also as our place is in a very rural location. But , what can you do?
My nearest neighbours do keep an eye on the place but it is worrying. Do you have steel reckers(sp?) on the windows?

A few years ago, someone I know who a villa built "about one our south of Valencia" as part of a new-ish complex. The villa was broken in to a few times. It ended up such that they'd break in, steal a tshirt and some food, and leave (as the owners took all their money/ID/valuables out with them).

It looked like they were breaking in through the windows. Turned out that they did a dodgy deal with the builders and had kept a front door key! Then they'd climb OUT through a window, or just put a foot print on the window ledge, to trick the owners, Once they changed the locks, the break-in stopped and it's been totally safe, even when empty for long periods, since.

Re: Scumbag thieves

Wow, such a violation!! I would also be a little suspicious of the neighbours but that cant be helped! Anything like this happening in the neighbourhood before?

Close friends of mine had a place in Turkey. Junkies squatted in it. It was vile, place was completly ruined. Feces covered the walls, when the toilets were full the left it in bags, needles everywhere, just disgusting.

They have just locked the door on it, the wife is very ill and cant deal with it. Still amazes me what people will do.... what people will do to where they are living. When they got into the apartment first it would have been beautiful. But, maybe i am a little naive!!

Sorry about the theft. Unfortunately that happens when a house or apartment is vacant for a long time. People around will eventually know that they are empty therefore that makes it vulnerable to squat or steal some furniture or personal belongings. Maybe the best thing is to have an alarm system or have an interphone for security.

Our place isn't rural though, I can understand rural locations as there are not many people to see someone making off with something. But our house is in a busy old town, but then i guess people mind their own. In answer to your question, no, we don't have the grills on the doors. We have one over the window on the bottom floor, but I am now looking into having a concertina grills on the patio on the roof terrace and a metal door on the front, that should sort it.

I would like to check out the neighbours, just seems too odd that we have new neighbours and our stuff goes missing...... But how can we prove it? The town itself is not too bad, but there are your usual transients passing through and also a big gypsy community on the other side of the town, but we never had trouble in 11 years until now. But I guess it is the crisis.

In the Mediterranean, if you do such a thing between 1 pm and 2.30 pm, nobody will look round. You could take an elephant with you, and nobody would care. And if you carry a heavy table around, everybody will think you are a worker who HAS TO DO the job. Some locals may keep doors open for you and assist you. They of course, when realising that they helped crime, will suffer instant amnesia !

Awful, sorry to hear this. I was mugged and got my I-phone stolen down on Langstrasse in Zurich a couple of months ago. Not really what you epxpect to happen in Switzerland but unfortunately it does happen.
