Re: Couldn't believe this request!

I sell bottled beer to take home or drink at my bar or at one of the communal tables in the Viadukt market. You'd be amazed how many people buy beer from other shops then ask me to open them for them.

I take the high ground and just open the bottle with a smile and if I'm feeling particularly cheeky I'll offer them a few cheesy nibbles to enjoy with their beer, again, offered with a big smile.

They usually get the message then

Mr Clean is a rip off. Austria just decided for having a law assuring free toilets at gas stations, since the expensive equivalence of Mr Clean there made people use the nature around the autohofs. Free, clean and available toilets, weehee!

Anyways, back to bums.
you know, I don't mind paying for nice, clean toilets but since they renovated the one at main station Zurich, I can go without. Stupid layout, useless sinks and understaffed. Not paying 2.- for that...

Re: Couldn't believe this request!

Sorry to say this, but your "service" have become way to Swiss. In other words: lack of service with the motto "pay up and/or get lost". I experience the lack of service in CH to be sympathetic with such attitude.

I am not a smoker and against smoking. However you have just been cheap/ unfriendly. Maybe the guy did not have his purse or could have had plenty of reasons.

If I where him, I would have bought the lighter with credit card and asked for a MWSt. reimbursement form filled out since I am to export it out of CH. As far as I know you are obliged to fill one out if requested.

I volunteer at a small kiosque down by the lake at Montreux. We sell souvenirs, postcards, cold-ish drinks (depending how well the fridge is working), and we also sell Bibles and Christian books (it's run by Christians).

After three years I thought I'd seen all the weird requests... the people who want to pay with credit cards, or American dollars, the people who want to write their postcards and give them to me to post for them, the tourist who demanded why he was in Montreux when the lake behind him was called 'Lake Geneva' so surely this had to be Geneva, the tourist who asked me how to get to 'the water' (not the lake, as it turned out, but a waterfall on one of the 'arty photograph' postcards we sell...')...

But yesterday I had an exchange that took my breath away.

I was hunting around for a replacement magnet when I heard someone trying to attract my attention. So I turned around, and there was a man, unlit cigarette in mouth, holding a lighter. I assumed he wanted to buy it. But no.

"Can I borrow this?"

"Excuse me?"

"I want to borrow this."

"I'm sorry sir, they are for sale. It's only 3 chf."

"No, I just want to borrow it to light my cigarette."

"I'm sorry, but these items are all for sale. I can't let you borrow it!"

He then tried to light up and I had to take the lighter out of his hand and put it back on the display. He then walked off, grumbling under his breath.

Now I don't smoke, don't know anyone who does and perhaps I'm missing out on some unwritten rule here... a rule that says a smoker can walk up to a point of sale that sells lighters and use one free of charge to light up?

Or was he just being very, very cheeky?

Answers on a postcard please...

So the guy who wound up paying for that lighter he used gets less fuel thatn he actually paid for? Yeah, way better customer service there.

Agree. There are free toilets in the trains, in Jelmoli, in Globus, Orell Füssli, Manor and so on.

Re: Couldn't believe this request!

In many kiosks in Asia, one will find a "public" cigarette lighter. This draws potential customers as well as avoids the problem that Vlh22 encountered, for a very small investment of some 30 rappen a week.

In CH, it is sometimes costlier to provide a free service. In a facility that I volunteer with, we have free wifi and a toilet and we are located no more than 25 metres from the free Bhf toilet.

Then the abuse came: wanton smoking and littering, damage to the door / lock etc. as well as abuse of downloading. Paying customers complained.

So in the end, free wifi was secured, and the toilet became available to paying guests only: end of problems.

And always some woman cleaner watching you pee.

Though it's a good upsell point. I usually pay the extra franc for a private pee.

Did it occur to you not selling that single lighter?
Yeah, 3CHF would be soooo much for a kiosk to have a lighter to "lend"

I don't really get why a "Christian" stall is selling smoking equipment anyway, it's like assisting suicide.
When the Dutch Christians heard that French Christians drank wine, they almost choked on their cigars. It's only in some* Christian circles that there's this need for pharisaical-like outward holiness.

You should have allowed him to use the lighter. That way, the person who buys the lighter is able to light fewer cigarettes, and thereby his lungs are marginally saved - a good dead. The sponger gets his free light and reaps his reward.

* most...

TBH, I'm not sure. I'd have thought the margin and turnover of a little kiosk run by volunteers isn't on the K-Kiosk scale.

You're assuming he just wanted to borrow the lighter to light his ciggie. He might have been on his way to a Bon Jovi concert.

Re: Couldn't believe this request!

Once we were biking in Stanheim near winterthur, we were asked to pay 40 rappen for matches..... in addition to 58 CHF we paid for lunh :-)...

Normally, we never had to pay for matches in restaurant.... funnily the matches was also an advertisement from some other company.....

Set him on fire and he has warmth for the rest of his life.

Which would Jesus have done?
