You get used to it... (5 years and going strong)

I could go on and give you the ins n outs of it as I'm a working non-professional who has had to learn the language and work from the ground up in order to work and study...

In a nutshell, Switzerland provides for a great lifestyle but when it all comes down to it....

Home is home...... Us Aussies just have a uniqueness that separates us from the pack....

In Australia, people always seem to get Switzerland and Sweden mixed up for some reason. Most Australians have no clue where anything is in Europe.
Switzerland, sweden, swaziland.. whats the difference?

I am told (from a swiss) that out of the English speaking expats, they seem to like the aussies the most. Have you found this to be true? They seem to be more interested in us over the brittish and americans.

Mountains and a location bang in the middle of Europe are highlights for me.
The ocean, spareness and Pad Thai are the things I long for

but then the Australians think the same thing of Switzerland, don't they?

I think that the same guy told me the same thing about Canadians...then when he meets a Kiwi he says the same to him so on and so forth...

I don't know about being more interested in us than the other expats but definitely more so than the other Auslanders.

But really is it any surprise ? I don't mean to sound narcistic but us Aussies do have a great open friendliness without the annoying accent.... I'd befriend me...

So I have spoken to a few Swiss people online, and when I tell them I'm from Australia the first thing they ask is "Why would you move here from Australia?!" as if i'm crazy or something.

The Swiss seem to think that Australia is some sort of island paradise. It seems to be the number one place they all want to go to (along with New Zealand).

..shhh..don't tell the Swiss that their country is a little paradise that kicks ar*e over Australia. I've been here just under 10 years and go back every year or so. We recently re-evaluated moving back now our son is school age and Switzerland still wins.

The Swiss just don't know how good they have it.

In brief, Switzerland kicks ass in terms of income. Nobody (or very very few) pay as well as the Swiss.
On the downside, integration here sucks for the most part (expats as they call themselves, but economic migrants in reality) do not try as hard since they consider themselves "professionals" and thus exempt from learning the local language. Getting with the Swiss isn't as easy as say the Belgians or other Europeans and I've tried both Romandie & the German side.
The Swiss think that 7 billion people all scheme to take the wealth of their nation away etc etc
Living standards are high (but low if you don't earn as much as you should).
Social life sucks and let's admit it...Lots of Swiss are just plain cold.
But to be honest with you, CH is relief for somebody coming from Africa for instance as it provides them with the opportunity to see other Westerners discriminated against and asked to return home or asked: oh why did you leave Germany? to make more money here?

Anyway, just a much needed rant...

Actually , we earned more in London in our younger years bc (before kids) but it didn't offer the same quality of life. Social life is great here but I don't count on seeing 100% Swiss friends (ie. those that have lived all their life here) more than twice a year with any less than 2 months notice.

I doubt that integration with the Swiss will ever happen for us. I live my quiet life, I abide by the rules, but I want to hang out with spontaneous people with some flexibility. Even Swiss friends that have lived abroad come back to a culture shock.

The Duty free allowance into Australia for Cigarettes will be dropped from 200/person to 50/person starting from Sep 01 st 2012.
A lot of jobs in the banking sector in Australia have been cut or moved across the tasman or to Asia, same in the warehousing sector.
Tourism is struggeling because of the exchange rate of the Australian Dollar
The only field not affected is the mining industry.......

But Australia is still worth a long haul trip (but i think i won't get a chance to live and work there)........

Re: "Why would you move here from Australia?!"

Yeah Switzerland is a nice, secure place to live. I've never had so many holidays and savings in my life..... Comes at a price though...

However money can't buy the relationships and social life I have back home. Even just the random chats with strangers, the smiles, the humor and all round welcoming attitude.

And then there's the weather, sport, beach, contrast of landscape, cheap yummy restaurants and a large variety, proper customer service, affordable housing, Free medical, fresh fruit and vegetables, gas stoves, mow your lawn and build a cubby house on a Sunday and kick ass rollercoasters.... Oh and hey let's not forget KFC !!!!

Rant finished. Back to the books.....

I think I was being very very general. I have friends in the States who would not move here as they make way more there than they would in CH. But I think that generally speaking, the average say mechanic would make more here than in the U.K. but it is all relative.

I have very few Swiss friends but I personally don't place quotas on where my friends should come from. It just goes to show the level of friendliness in a population. Sadly, it is quite low here.

I think the truth is that many Swiss would - deep down - rather want to live somewhere else, same as Germans I guess. Otherwise, you couldn't explain why everyone who can afford to buys a house in Spain or Italy, or at least in Ticino to spend the weekends and retirement. Many look forward to retirement when they can finally move away, quite sad actually.

Switzerland does have some advantages, but the constant bad weather really takes its toll, especially during the summer when you would hope to have a few nice days at least. Australia simply has the image of sunshine and beaches (probably the image is better than reality), so I guess that's why no Swiss would understand why a sane person would move from there to here. In their point of view you're already where they dream they could be one day, so why would you move to this cold, grey and lonely place?

Most aussies grow up near beaches, so its just something "normal" to them, so they wouldn't find them as special/amazing as the swiss. However, most aussies don't have access to mountains and snow nearby, so this is something we would find special/amazing about Switzerland.

I guess to most swiss the mountains and snow aren't anything special/amazing either, because they have seen them all their lives - just like we've seen beaches all our lives.

So I guess it goes both ways. We aussies can't understand why the swiss would move from such a beautiful country with snow covered alps, while they can't understand why we would move away from a country with sunshine and beaches.

Would be interesting to aee how many grow up near a beach there is large areas of Sydney many kms from a beach and numerous other cities no where in sight of a beach. I didnt see a beach until after I left school and even when i did they did not seem any thing special still to this day have not tried surfing but are a regular skier

Most Swiss love the seas / seaside. Mum was bored an angered in her youth by the love of her parents for the mountains and was delighted when an aunt in Stein-am-Rhein made it possible for her to stay in Stein and go up to the Untersee for swmiming. I liked skiing during winter holidays but generally always DISliked and even feared the mountains, and stays up there in military service did not change much. Alright, I have a lot of experience up there, and know how to deal with thouse "mountaineers" but rather distrust those folks and fear those mountains.

Snow covered mountains ? Nice if in a healthy distance as in Zürich and Geneva

Sunshine ? Yes, most Swiss are tired of rain, particularily in summertime. And so are ready to accept even 1.5rooms apartment in Lugano over far bigger ones north of the Gottardo <!

Re: "Why would you move here from Australia?!"

I didn't grow up near an ocean so have always preferred lakes, rivers and mountains. Having visited the himilayas, andes, rockies, and alps I still cant think of anything better then being in the mountains. The oceans are nice to look at and take nice photos of sunsets but I tire of them fast and find swimming at sand filled beaches a big turn off.
