Just like Canadians... I've never met an Australian that I didn't like.

I didn't grow up near an ocean so have always preferred lakes, rivers and mountains. Having visited the himilayas, andes, rockies, and alps I still cant think of anything better then being in the mountains. The oceans are nice to look at and take nice photos of sunsets but I tire of them fast and find swimming at sand filled beaches a big turn off.
I'm the same. I enjoy the beach on the odd occasion but wouldn't say I love it. I would much prefer being up high in the mountains and being able to do snow sports in winter.

This is why I find Switzerland appealing, because i'm after a "sea change" or should I say "mountain change" lol.

I think the truth is that many Swiss would - deep down - rather want to live somewhere else, same as Germans I guess. Otherwise, you couldn't explain why everyone who can afford to buys a house in Spain or Italy, or at least in Ticino to spend the weekends and retirement. Many look forward to retirement when they can finally move away, quite sad actually.

Switzerland does have some advantages, but the constant bad weather really takes its toll, especially during the summer when you would hope to have a few nice days at least. Australia simply has the image of sunshine and beaches (probably the image is better than reality), so I guess that's why no Swiss would understand why a sane person would move from there to here. In their point of view you're already where they dream they could be one day, so why would you move to this cold, grey and lonely place?
You are dead right, it is all about the image and the old 'grass is greener'. Aus is awesome for a holiday but no matter what they say the quality and quantity of life is far better here in Switzerland. There is always something on, you can travel and discover other cultures by getting on a train (it takes 5 hours just to get off Australia if heading this way from Melbourne) and nothing will eat you if you go for a swim! Swimming here is bliss, it's like I'm suddenly back at the top of the food chain!

I miss that about Australia ... the need to check for venomous wildlife before putting on your shoes, the back-of-your-mind knowledge that something may swim up from the depths (or over from the bank) to nibble on you, and of course the ever-present risk of drop-bears ...

Apart from people (with whom I can chat on Skype or similar modern technologies) pretty much the only things I miss are waves - there are no waves on Lake Zurich.

In Australia, people always seem to get Switzerland and Sweden mixed up for some reason.
or they confuse the Swiss flag with the Red Cross. Unbelieveable...

Re: "Why would you move here from Australia?!"

I'm from Canada and while I was traveling in England last week, a guy I met was shocked that I'd even bothered traveling there. "Why would you want to come to England?! And why would you move to Europe, Canada is so beautiful!"

I love Canada so much, but I think the European landscape I've seen so far is beautiful as well! I think lots of people just have these idealized perceptions of other countries from good tourism marketing

Re: "Why would you move here from Australia?!"

I wonder if it is a "you are moving from Australia?!" question as they are comparing the two countries or it was simply because that is where you are moving from. I have heard the question "why did you move from X?" directed to a lot of foreigners. Sometimes it seems to be a way to tell whether you are moving for economic reasons/work, social reasons or if you have a Swiss partner/spouse.

Re: "Why would you move here from Australia?!"

No one ever asked me that. But personally I do miss the Aussie way of life. Not saying its perfect,, but the beach and warm weather are missed.

I lived in Sydney for a year and Perth for a year. Real Estate is more affordable in CH and taxs are MUCH lower. Superannuation payments are a killer if youre paying +40% income taxs.

Switzerland is great for women as well. My wife was making a good six figure salary in CH before we moved to Perth. She was doing the same job in Perth, working full time, making about 35,000 a year, before tax and super!!!!! So for women its much more equal. The men in her dept in Australia were infact making six figure salaries.

But now that we have kids? Oz is certainly a better choice. You will be able to make your own judgment once you get here. But if you enjoy the beach, enjoy fresh food, enjoy variety, enjoy seafood (or even sushi), and sunshine, there is a good chance you will miss Oz.

I miss people opening doors for you, people saying please or thank you, and people smiling. Switzerland is much more predictable than Oz (I had to wait 6 weeks to get internet in my home in Perth!!!!) but many "quality of life" boxs are not ticked in CH for most people who are used to warm climates.

I think Wallabies was saying real estate is cheaper here in Switzerland. Not sure if he was being sarcastic or not. I thought yes but not 100% sure.

Overall I think Switzerland real estate is more expensive but depends where you are on both sides.

Interest rates are way lower here so mortgage costs must be lower.

Funny, when I lived there I met plenty of women who said they'd never marry an Australian man.

Wallabies wasn't being sarcastic but pointing out that buyin cost combined with mortgage rates makes Switzerland way cheaper. Sydney and Melbourne are easily on par with Zurich these days to buyin with 1-2 bedroom apartments going in beach areas this past weekend at 1.25-2.25 Million (70-100m living area) A mortgage here of 1M is generally cheaper then one of 300K in Australia

You can buy a small house in Australia for the price you pay for an apartment in Switzerland.

True. But you can also buy a small house in Switzerland for the price you pay for an apartment in Oz. Depends where they are.
