"Why would you move here from Australia?!"

So I have spoken to a few Swiss people online, and when I tell them I'm from Australia the first thing they ask is "Why would you move here from Australia?!" as if i'm crazy or something.

The Swiss seem to think that Australia is some sort of island paradise. It seems to be the number one place they all want to go to (along with New Zealand).

Sure there are some great things about Australia, but it also has its problems like any other country. The Swiss just can't seem to understand why someone would move from there, they seem to think Australia is completely flawless and superior to their own country.

I am moving to Switzerland next month, and I think i'm going to get tired of constantly being asked "why would you move here from Australia?" Anyone else here from Australia sick of being asked the same thing all the time?

Re: "Why would you move here from Australia?!"

They have visited, chances are have spent a month or so but they wouldn´t know better that it is entirely a different kettle of fish to reside there.

For one, almost everything is much smaller in CH when compared to Australia. Most homes are small, having a garden is a bit of a luxury. Compare that with having your own 1 acre lot with lots of sunshine and a spacious 4 bedroom brick home for less than AUD$350K in North Brisbane.

In CH, it is very expensive. 70% rent for various reasons.

Re: "Why would you move here from Australia?!"

Im not from Australia but i get the same reaction from my friends back home in Cyprus. They seem to think that Switzerland is paradise and we swim in money. Well guess what. Its not. I still have to work hard for that paycheck at the end of the month and no, i dont live in a chalet in the Alps. And although i love my life here, there are times i wish i was back home with my mom. Like right now for example

Re: "Why would you move here from Australia?!"

For those casually asking, I explain that Switzerland has the advantages for my family of easy access to Europe, and multiple languages both taught in school (to all in primary school, not as electives in secondary school) and frequently used in the community.

For those who are more persistent, I start listing the multitude of poisonous, venomous and otherwise-dangerous fauna in Australia. They then switch to an awe-struck contemplation of how any child survives to adulthood in such a deadly wilderness ...

I'd LOVE to know where you can get a decent place in North Brisbane that's not in bogan central for those sorts of sums of money and with that much space that's not in the bush! Brisbane is every bit as much as CH now!

Try Wamuran 4512, between Caboolture and Woodford.

If you don't like the sea, and would prefer to live in the 1990s rather than the 1980s, come to Switzerland!

That's true, but the downside to that is urban sprawl and it takes ages to get anywhere in Australian cities.

As a single person, living in a smaller home wouldn't bother me. But I can see how Australia might be more ideal for families needing extra space.

I think its also a case of "the grass is always greener". There are no beaches in Switzerland, so naturally they dream of beaches. There aren't many mountains with snow close by in Australia, so this is something I am dreaming of in Switzerland.

Re: "Why would you move here from Australia?!"

I loved Australia in that 22 visits made in the span of some 15 years and by chance ended up in CH from Brisbane. While it was very difficult in the beginning ( first 2 years ) in CH, I sort of got used to CH and now call it home and stopped missing the beaches and space. If I needed the beach, I would go to Skagen or elsewhere in Denmark or a short trip away in Europe.

At a Job Basis class given by RAV, I met someone like you ( AU/CH citizen ). He left Oz and came to CH as his Swiss father passed away and family packed up.

He lived in Winti and had major issues getting used to the cold shoulder treatment by family and officials ( for lacking German and a job for example ). But being a Swiss, he struggled for far less time.

Indeed but that's miles out and hardly Manly harbour!

Still youd only get land for 350 or an old tin shed! There are places here too out in the sticks with land, to live in a good suburb or in the city I stand by the fact Brisbane is just as expensive as Zurich now.

Agreed! Too bloody expensive and both currencies are virtually at par now.

BTW, this is the house at Wamuran that we bought for AUD$180K and sold off 2 years ago for AUD$320K 1 acre 5 minutes to Caboolture.

Tell me about it! I was shocked in Jan! Prices have skyrocketed, but wages in the finance have gone up a lot; the city is speading and very up and up and I guess they need to be able to pay for all the flooding damage

The OH is half Swiss half Auz and the whole family is either Brisbane or Bush based and this years' visit wasn't a cheap one! We rented a serviced appartment in Kangaroo Point this time for 3 reasons; central to everyone, enough to escape if wanted and the lovely family homes in the burbs didn't have enough space to save us all killing each other or clamping our bladders during the morning bathroom rush! LOL

So bottom line I guess is close to either major city one will sacrifice size and space and pay for the honour. I just thank god we don't have their performace car tax here!!!

From Wamuran, it was to Bundy ( and the bloody floods )

But I lived in Wynnum, in the city with pet dogs ( 3 x Dobies ) with plenty of running space AUD$220 a week.

I agree, Australia now has some of the most expensive real estate in the world!

I've heard Switzerland property is also expensive, but Australia must be catching up by now.

The cost of living here keeps going up quickly as well, electricity, food, fuel, all seem to be increasing rapidly compared to wages.

It is... Especially as jrs rightly says the currency is near parody... We have less tax 'tho bit our day to day food, clothing etc is more here tho.

I was also shocked to see that now booze however is as much there now and don't even get me started on the price of smokes there! Wow! I was there for a long visit and was sure 600 would last me and when they didn't on the last week I had to consider selling a limb for a fix!
