Re: Female midddle-aged joggers

Damned if you do, damned if you don't hey!

Anybody who is overweight, and who decides to be brave enough to go and exercise out there (and I can tell you it does take courage!)- has my utter support and admiration - and really should have yours too.

Yep, they could stay in front of the telly, so miserable that the only thing to do is eat some more - but no- they say enough is enough, and I am going to do something about it. And it takes guts (NO pun intended) to go, when you know you will meet all those fit people, who will stare at your butt or wobbling boobs- but you swallow your pride and go - out there, to run, to the pool or the gym - and you are on your way. On your way to feel better, be healthier, look better - and it feels good, real good - apart those b********* out there, the starers and commenters- who make you want to give up. But you keep going - despite them - despite their petty, nasty, judgemental stares- and it feels sooo good, too good to let them upset you.

Lana Del - who are you? I feel I've met you before, somewere?

Just remember all the people who are jogging/swimming/cycling past you started from zero. Some may have been overweight, some with health issues and others (like me) with a base level fitness that would have made a 90 year old asthmatic look like an olympic athlete.

Most people I know who exercise regularly have respect for other such people no matter what their condition is. Either that or they are concentrating so hard on their own programme they don't even see you.

Feeling self conscious like I did, I chose a set of very quiet streets to embark on my running programme for the first few weeks. That way I could stop in a sweaty, puffing red-faced mess and get my breath back out of sight of the Odlo-clad gazelles of the area.

Alternatively, if you want to swim in relative peace and quiet, find a time when the local pool is empty.

My running isn't too bad now so I am happy to run out anywhere and know I can keep it up. I feel a rush of "good on ya" when I see someone going through the first few weeks of red-faced agony and always give them a big smile as I pass them.

One thing that everyone who exercises has in common, no matter what the ability, is the post-exercise glow. That never wears off.

Re: Female midddle-aged joggers

Just a thought - it is very easy for men to buy sport's wear in very large sizes, but not always for women. Many bra companies do very large cup sizes, but not chest sizes. Most sport's bras are not available in chest sizes over 40"/105cm - even if they come in FF bra size!

For skiing, men's wear come in huge sizes - but not ladies! In the past, I have had to buy men's ski/snowboarding clothing to get the right size - and find a way to shorten the arms and legs, which is very difficult due to zips, double cuffs, etc. (btw if you need help with this, I have become an expert!). Same for wetsuits for windsurfing.

So, as a fat older person - should I have stopped skiing and not learnt to snowboard or rollerblade, or gone back to ice-skating and windsurfing- because people might stare, laugh, or whatever? I have in fact found that young people I've met on the slopes or water have been really positive, full of praise and smiles, saying 'wow - i wish my mum would have the bottle'.

If you are overweight - don't stay in and miserable. Go running, swimming, whatever floats your boat, and ignore the miserable ***s- power to you.

Re: Female midddle-aged joggers

For those of you trying to learn German - the phenomenon described by the OP is known as "Moppel-Gehoppel".

You can find similar sights in pretty much every sport, from the phalanx of old ladies in any given public swimming pool to each and every gym. I think the lawmakers should limit it to certain times and places, which would not only solve the OPs problem but also do the community good in other, less expected ways: I have seen nothing more motivating than an entire room of fatties doing "Zumba". I really never before felt the urge to lose weight as badly as then...

Maybe there should be dual carriageway running routes; a narrow fast lane and a half-mile-wide wobble lane?

Re: Female midddle-aged joggers

The number of times I've tried to get other friends out there to start doing some exercise, be it walking, cross-country-skiing, swimming - and they just burst into tears and say they just couldn't, because people out there will stare and poke fun- shame, shame on you those who stare and make stupid comments...

I am confident and will not let any stares or idiots beat me down, but so many just cannot overcome their embarrassment, and it is a vicious circle of lack of esteem- and more weight, and so on. And I can assure you it isn't just the Swiss who stare and show total intolerance.

You got me. It's true. I am making excuses. I really don't wear a bra because I love the sight of them bouncing around in my gym's floor-to-ceiling mirrors.

P.S. Odile, you're my hero. That is all.

Judging from the comments here, it's a good bet it's just not the Swiss. My physio therapy happens at the migro fitness park in Winterthur. I'm definitely not waif like, I have a bad knee and my walking is a bit slow due to joint stiffness from one of my meds. People are very nice - they say hello but otherwise ignore me, makes me very happy. I do not exercise well in groups... I much prefer my own company for exercise, maybe the addition of my dog. If you want to say nasty things about my wobbly flesh, then I can comment about your rudeness, stupidity and tell you to mind your own business. Obviously you're not exercising hard enough if you have that much time to assess my appearance.

It's one thing to complain about cluelessness in shared spaces. It's actually a hazzard if people are unaware of their surroundings. I just don't think it's restricted to wobbly middle aged women, but that's the salient comparison.

That is really a psychological problem then.
Would the person be inclined to work out in the middle of the night, when no-one is watching?
In the end, it's another excuse, I'm afraid.

It's a shared problem, if that. The watcher needs to mind his/her own business, while the watched learns to ignore.
