Why (WHY??) wont they move over?

I have an interesting question, which I am hoping some of you psychologists out there can provide some answers on.

My family and I live in a house on the lake, which can only be reached via these single lane country roads that are only accessible to local residents. These roads happen to be very popular with joggers and bikers and such, particularly in the evenings and on weekends.

So when I get home from work I tend to get stuck behind a cyclist or two, which isn't really a problem per se.

What happens, though, is that these people will not move over by one inch to allow me to pass them. They will also not increase their speed let alone pull over whenever there is an opportunity. This does not happen occasionally but literally 95% of the time and really, really annoys me.

I may be wrong but I have never seen this happen anywhere but here.

Is anyone having the same experience? Why is this?

Re: Why (WHY??) wont they move over?

Have you tried horning at them?

When I am on my cycle, the one thing that I hate is knowing that there is a car tailing me: worse if the driver horns. I try my best to let cars pass so that I can cycle on with some peace of mind.

Is the road wide enough for you to safely overtake?

My childish side says, the day you do over take them, slow down to 10mph and don't let them pass. And for added effect, have a big note on your rear window that says "Taste your own medicine"

They probably think you are happy to stay behind them most bikes will move over as soon as you indicate you want to pass

Where? Your profile says you are in New York. Maybe it's normal over there...

As a cyclist myself, I don't always hear a car behind me. I think the general rule of thumb is for cyclists to ride single file (at least here in CH) but maybe in the quiet country roads they ride two abreast if they aren't aware of any cars behind?

Re: Why (WHY??) wont they move over?

you can play a bit of chicken with them....BUT BEWARE if something goes wrong you are in trouble and the biker could get seriously hurt /die. So do not go to far.

I usually go close enough to them to annoy them but even if they fell they couldnt get hurt from the car (distance) but damn I cannot stand them

Sound horn = "Danger, car approaching". So that's that law dealt with.

Why can't you hear cars behind you? Plugged into an iPod ? Or electric cars?

I find that there is a difference between 'horning' people and warning people.

Re: Why (WHY??) wont they move over?

You can quickly tap the horn to let them know that you're there. No need to make lots of noise.

I'm still wondering if the house is in Switzerland or in NY though...

Re: Why (WHY??) wont they move over?

It appears that responders are offering solutions, but as of yet no one has answered WHY? .... I will try.

- Swiss road users live in a bubble, unaware of the existence or presence of anyone or anything else;

- no matter what form of motion is employed each individual is always in the right and has right of way over everybody else .... hence they are in their bubble:-
a) Fritz is walking today, so bikes and motor vehicles have to give way;
b) Fritz is on his bike, so pedestrians need to move over and motor vehicles, give way;
c) Fritz is driving, so everybody should keep out of the way ..... 'cos he's late and in a hurry.

The problems occur when Fritz encounters all the other Fritzs' ...... and John Smiths', etc.

To cycle "two-abreast" is the definite recipe to have police on you ! And a short horn-signal will lead most cyclists on earth to give way.

This remark

in a house on the lake, which can only be reached via these single lane country roads that are only accessible to local residents

heavily points to the USA, as such roads are not possible by the Federal Swiss traffic laws, except of course a "Fahrverbot" with "Zubringerdienst gestattet". But a lonely country-road somewhere around the Zürisee ?

Oh dear. I receive my first groan on this forum. I am so disappointed that it was over something so mundane and pretty innocent. I should have just said "tail him and scare the sh*t out of these damn road-hog cyclists" - at least then, I would have felt the groan was well-deserved.

In any case, that is crazy! Is this ban on using horns at any time other than to avert danger enshrined in Swiss law? I would have thought that the law was for something like "it is obligatory to use your car horn if the guy in front of you takes longer than 0.25 seconds to move off when the traffic lights turn green" because that accounts for around 99% of the cases of when I've heard a car beep.
