oooooooh......stop it. I've got some and you are making mine tingle, with your "making grown men look at the floor in fear" and everything. You're quite the Clint, aren't you??
o...k....

You may physically have them, sounds like you dont morally have them though.

No, just someone who doesnt shy away from correcting manners or sink in to a hole when confronted by someone who thinks they can impose themselves on others for no reason. I put up with it for long enough here, but recent experiences show they all fold as easily as they did in London.

Re: Noise problem or racism?

A few random thoughts:

- It does sound like racism to me

- If only people would use decent closed or fitted in-ear headphones, none of these issues would arise (I use a rinky-dinky little pair of Sennheiser closed phones) - but I appreciate people don't even know such options exist. Clue for an awareness campaign, maybe?

- If she'd had said it to me, I would have replied in English (in my crispest English accent): "look, if it weren't for the sacrifices my grandparents made, you'd be speaking german now..."

Re: Noise problem or racism?

It might not be racism; it could be xenophobia. Or just a rude, disagreeable old lady. Either way, her behaviour wasn't pleasant, especially as (if we believe the OP) the music was hardly loud in the first place.

Re: Noise problem or racism?

Sounds like the usual casual racism encountered from time to time in many places.

While I'm not a fan of knee-jerk racism claims, I'm not quite sure why anyone has to "defend" some random stranger who's behaviour could be construed as racist. Personal experience: in ten years in Switzerland we've encountered more racism than in the previous ten years in the UK. And that's not including SVP posters. It's probably from foreigners though.

For sure. The description of the whole scene has got a lot of unknowns. But maybe in this sense there's not a lot of difference between racism and xenophobia (after all, how can you even tell if somebody is from another country? I was born in Tooting, but pretty much no Swiss person could tell I wasn't Swiss until I open my mouth).

In my experience, there is a certain 'naive racism' in both Swiss and German people (maybe older people and somewhat like Britain in the 60s/70s) compared to British or Americans. I think that a factor in this is that Britain had an empire for a couple of hundred years and so had a cultural exposure to African and Asian people that Switzerland (and to a lesser extent, Germany) never had.

Whatever; this attitude is certainly rapidly changing (broadly) among the young generation. Anyway. back to the headphones...

Too right. Nothing teaches you to respect a person like keeping them fit and healthy, to ensure you get the best price for them at the slave market

And having them win gold medals for you in sprinting at the Olympics as they recall worse times when they tried to evade their captors.

The British Empire was, of course, atrocious. I'm trying to drill down here to the cultural implications. So, in fact, Kipling rather than slavery has had more effect on the British zeitgeist.

Re: Noise problem or racism?

After complaining about being rudely pushed aside in the Migros a lady friend of mine was told, 'You're Swiss, just wait until we take over'. This from a 'gentleman' accompanied by a 'lady' in Moslem dress.

Racism is a form of Xenophobia. Prejudice against foreigners is Xenophobia. Quibbling over words isn't really helpful.

Being an expert on the subject for over 20 years I should know the difference between racism, xenophobia and prejudice.

No, xenopholbia is the fear of foreigners. That's not strictly speaking the same as prejudice.

Re: Noise problem or racism?

obviously prejudiced behaviour if the old dear goes around shouting at everyone who speaks over a certain decibel then she is a bit nutty. However she did mention "go back to your own country" which doesnt warrant an extreme judgement as a racist act but more she had pre judged ideas about him (the black guy) making her prejudiced. Xenophobia is a form of fear against foreigners and is found in countries which have very few migrants usually.

Arguably, prejudice and racism are result of fear, mistrust and misunderstanding.

That and being thick as pigshit.
