Harassment against a foreigner at Globus Bellieve Store over sampling free bread

I moved here from the US two years ago- below is a real story happened to me in which I had to consult a human right lawyer to in my effort to get a honest apology from Globus - I call on all free citizens of the world living in Zurich to boycott shopping at Globus Bellieve store !

my story...

Shoppers Beware! Free bread samples may not be free at all!
A consumer’s nightmare at the Globus Bellevue store in Zurich

Free bread samples may not be free after all depending on where you shop in Zurich. In one instance, a shopper was detained by security for sampling two pieces of bread with olive oil at a sample table.

Can you imagine this happening to you as a shopper?

On a summer afternoon in August- I was food shopping in the Globus Bellevue store. I was walking around the store and trying different samples – deciding what to buy for dinner. Upon leaving the store, I was pulled away by a stern looking security guard for questioning. Never had I been stopped by security in my life and I was scared and confused. During the whole time the security guard would not explain why I was being detained in a security room.

What was the reason? I was told that I was not allowed to take 2 pieces of bread with the olive oil! I asked if this was store policy, and where was it written? There was no answer, only silence.

I was enraged and felt humiliated. The situation seemed totally ridiculous! So I asked for the manager. My simple afternoon shopping experience has turned into a night mare – being detained by security for simply trying 2 pieces of bread. After all, free samples are provided for people to taste and it should be expected that people will eat them. If customers are only allowed to try 1 piece of bread then there should be a sign stating the store policy. There was no sign anywhere that said “ Forbidden, free samples can be tasted only once!”

Twenty minutes passed and the security guard returned with an assistant manager and told me that I was now free to go! No apology was given and I could not talk to the store manager.

I want to make a formal complaint to the store for harassment over tasting free bread… and this is how my story ends up here on this news. I want consumers to know my experience and consider it next time they visit Globus.

So Globus – you must post a big sign to warn your customers that they are only allowed 1 piece of bread, which is normally old and about to be thrown away – because the consequence may result in detention and questioning!

This is a real story- and I am still waiting for an apology from Globus.

Welcome to the forum. My advice is to go to the Viadukt tonight and try some cheese from Grumpygrapefruit. You may also be detained but only because the atmosphere is lovely.

So.... after all that sampling, what did you decide to buy before leaving the store? The olive oil? Or nothing?

I was wondering the same, how much money did you spend?
Or did you just wonder around eating samples without buying anything?

In my opinion, it doesn't matter how much she purchased, as long as she didn't confuse the "sample this" with "all you can eat".

I'd like to know the OP's definition of "sample".

What about Free Sampling in Globus instead of Taco Bell Madrid?
This is much more an adventure.

Re: Harassment against a foreigner at Globus Bellieve Store over sampling free bread

personally i wouldn't touch that free sample stuff anyway--- you never know where people's hands have been (or you do ) and if i want bread or cheese i'll take a chance- consider a good lesson learned.

anyway, you can always have a word with the manager if it makes you feel better if you really feel wronged. but honestly, a human rights lawyer? i think you need to take a break and put things into perspective.

oh, and no way this post is written by a native english speaker, p.s

Re: Harassment against a foreigner at Globus Bellieve Store over sampling free bread

If this is true, that is the most stupidest thing I ever heard! If you don't want people to eat your samples, don't put them there. If one eats two pieces, so what? If one eats the whole plate, it is not ok, it is antisocial but certainly not a reason to be detained.

And for those who asked if OP bought something, it is not important and has nothing to do with if the op was entitle to a sample or ten.

Come on!

The free sample plates are heaven for my son who normally tries to shovel as much of whatever it is down his neck before the woman behind the counter can stop him.

He's never been carted off by security guards, although I have felt obliged to offer an apology to the person behind the counter having to restock the plate again.

it's unfair, it's free samples. You are not required to make a purchase to try a free sample!!

So your question is irrelevant and confusing.

Same as above, it has nothing to do with the issue.

You are allowed to enter a shop and not buying anything.
Same for "free samples".

Now, wondering if the "free samples " where not the delicatessen stuff (ie paying one): maybe there's been a confusion?

I guess that was exactly the problem.
Around Bellevue they have a lot of people who, lets say, don't want or can't spend money on food and they come to the store for a free meal.
Globus wants to provide sampling for their customers but need to control the cheeky ones.
There the surveillance comes in.
They watched you and waited if you would buy something. This didn't happen, so they told you off for eating for free.
I'm sorry but I do understand them a little.
