Gee, no one suggested doing what I would probably do. Shrug, pick it up, and put it with my pile of recycling. If it were to happen again in the future I would worry about it. But is it worth all this scheming?
The best part about doing what you just suggested is the feeling that you're not as pathetic as they are! Boy that's a great feeling....

Update: It came back!

The pile is back at my door. So we know who it was, then.

OK, put it back downstairs. Let's see how long this little game lasts....
Time to listen at the door & open it while she is there. Prepare your speech.

I simply cannot convey strongly enough how effective pooping on a neighbor's doormat is.

I guarantee she'll never bother you again.

She wouldnt let me put a fence up, and landord backed her, to stop her spying, and to relieve her stress of my lifestyle bothering her, so now I just walk around in my boxers, sunbathe, playing table tennis, have BBQ parties, and play with my dog right next to her view point so she can enjoy the benefits of mutual exposure to ones balcony.

Its great fun, and I am definitely enjoying my life there more than her.
If I was you, I would walk around in thongs, then she could enjoy much more!

So, I live in an apartment building with one of those typically "Swiss" little old ladies
When we still lived in Basel, we also had one of those "little old ladies". She terrorized us on a daily basis (our e-piano's too loud as she wants to take her 3 p.m. power nap, out cat scratched her front door - despite our assurances that we don't have a cat etc. etc.). Except that we're Swiss and the old lady was Korean. Go figure - little old ladies are the same, no matter where you live.

Re: Passive aggressive message from Swiss little old lady?

Someone threw a McDonald's bag in the public bin in the laundry room this week. Since I am the only foreigner in the building, it MUST HAVE been me. We received a not so nice note on our door.

Seriously, I don't even eat McDonald's except when on vacation
in desperation.

Unbelievable.

Honestly, sometimes I'd like to send some of these grouchy Swiss people off to a third world country. Then they'd really have something to complain about.

Oh, wait. Now I'm complaining.

Damn. I've been here too long.

Re: Passive aggressive message from Swiss little old lady?

Sometimes I think people really have too much time and extra energy, as I cannot explain to myself how someone can think and act as such a fool.

Can't you simply throw away the pin or put it in the entrance, so that someone would get rid of it instead of trying to use it as Sartre's existentialist maxime?

If you don't know who put old paper in front of your door, if you are the only one to get nasty notices attached just find out if you are interested, otherwise do as young Roman Polanski did in one of his old film and suffer in silence if this is enough to get your life miserable.

I think you forgot the part (or forgot explaining why it would be impossible) about her knowing that someone else put it outside your door for some reason.

Is it only you and her in the building? (I think you said something about other neighbors, but not sure)

Or, perhaps, someone else saw them outside your door and then saw them outside the woman's door, so, being nice to her, put them back outside your door for her.

Meanwhile, I think the best idea is to put the pile down near the entry door, along with a note explaining that it's not yours, and apologizing for whatever mistake you may have made to make anyone think it could be yours.

Thankfully, although I have a bit of a busy-body landlady AND a potential busy-body neighbor or two, I live in "dachwonung" (attic apartment) with no lift and NO ONE comes all the way up if they don't absolutely have to.

Re: Passive aggressive message from Swiss little old lady?

Speaking as someone who is having a hard time taking the high road these days, I advise you take the high road and get it out of your system. The paper should be recycled. Put it out with the other recycling if you've got curbside. If not, do the right thing and take it wherever it's collected. End of story.

Another thing occurred to me: When I got here last year as a subtenant the person subletting the apartment said that if you put the wrong things in the trash and there's something with your name on it or your apartment number in the pile, it could actually end up on your doorstep again. Could it be that in this instance, the little old lady (who, to be fair, sounds like a real head case) had nothing to do with it?

try cussing under your breath in Swiss German whenever the poor old lady is around, that usually throws them off their game.

I do not know who wrote the silly note.

Then there was the time that I parked my car within the lines
of my parking space, yet slightly crooked. Naturally, I received
a note requesting that I park straight.

Why do they care? My space is isolated, and no one parks on either
side of me.

It's a game and you reached the next level. The game should get harder now. Fold all the paper into paperships and put it in front of the door. You just don't want to play the same level all the time, you have to go on til you reach the boss fight.

Leave a note on her door saying "I have left a note on your door". For extra points, cut the letters out of the werbung.

I don't know what I find worse... those typical messages when telling you what to do, or the non verbal messages that you are "supposed" to understand!
