Do you have to pay for that?
It should be part of their quota.

Re: Painter trying to charge for an estimate!

So let me get this straight...

I go buy a new car, get the salesman turned inside out with a test drive, options, financing etc and then say I think I want an Suv instead of a Mini.

Do I pay for his time too? No?

Why should I pay a tradesman then? they can kiss my foot.

Re: Painter trying to charge for an estimate!

If you ask them how much for a quote, do they charge you for quoting for the quote?

Re: Painter trying to charge for an estimate!

As said, and as usual, I can see both sides

At the end of the day though - we can all think what we want - but I'd like to know how one stands LEGALLY here in CH, if refusing to pay. Could it, or could it not, be registered as an unpaid bill = debt with the Office des poursuites in left unpaid - with all the ensuing effects? Does anybody know for sure, what the official viewpoint/law stands here in CH? Until we know FOR SURE, I'd be cautious with refusing to pay.

Re: Painter trying to charge for an estimate!

It is not surprising that there is a trend to charge for quotes in order to reduce the free loaders asking 10 tradespeople to give a quote and then rejecting them. These people have a business to run and time on rejected quotes is time they cant spend on another real job. Switzerland also is not the only place where this happens.

The salesman gets a salary as well as commission so he gets paid whether you buy a car or not. Tradesman don't get salaries, they get paid for the work they do, be it painting, rewiring or doing quotations for potential customers.

What happens if you get an unpaid bill registered? What are the implications? Just a problem getting credit or something else?

Who the hell do you think you are? Comments like that really really grind my gears.

You may have been somebody in your country of origin, and guess what, you're still somebody here, but you're the same somebody as everybody else.

Get off your high horse, and find a bit of respect for your fellow man.

I just got off the phone with a painter who wanted me to pay for his estimate because I did not choose him to do the work! Is this normal practice? I had quite a heated exchange in my poor french, but knew enough to explain there was no way I was paying. He never said there was a charge at the time, and he said it's only a free estimate if you accept his offer!! Any feedback on this, as we need more things done to the house, and I don't want it to happen again.

Thanks, it is much clearer now, I had no idea this was the practice, but then EVERYTHING in Swiss costs money. I feel totally Swissified!
Everything was going too well...now I wonder what the two quotes for a replacement boiler are going to cost us!
Why in all the world would anyone ask a painter for a quote to replace a Boiler free estimate in North america becomes a thing of the past

You could find yourself unable to rent a flat, get a job, get a bank loan, get a mortgage, etc, etc. Having a debt registered against you can make your life in CH very difficult. Hence I'd like to know exactly how it would be seen legally here - what we think is irrelevant to a great extent.

Re: Painter trying to charge for an estimate!

Estimates are billable, sorry if you don't know that, but why should someone give you a free estimate?

Sure, an off the cuff verbal estimate could be expected for free, but not a detailed written one!

"Gruezi."

"Gruezi."

"How much is that bread over there?"

"28 franks and 68 rappens."

"Oh? It is a bit expensive. Won't take it..."

"You still owe me 10 franks for telling you the price...!"
