I was in a Hospital in Grabs SG for a week, had a room with 5 other guys. One from Switzerland, one Italian, 3 others from one other country. No TV in the room and it was one of the longest weeks I had. Wish they would limit how many are in one room and a TV would of been a luxury but then who would of controled it, is the next question. As for the food there was times I didn't eat it.
I pay a bit extra on my insurance so that I won't have to deal with that. Private room, please!

Re: Hospitals charge to watch TV is sickening

I think this is a great idea. Instead of incorporating the cost of television into the patient's required expenses (indirectly or directly), they give the patient the option of paying for something that some may not use. There's always books, magazines, puzzles, friends and family, and (nowadays) tablets and smartphones to keep the patient in good spirits during their convalescence.

I'm just not sure what people's sexual habits have to do with watching TV in hospital.

Well... There was that episode of Grey's Anatomy where the patient was allergic to all pain meds, so his doctor prescribed adult programming as an alternative therapy.

Re: Hospitals charge to watch TV is sickening

I've been hospitalised four times for a total of 5 months over the last 3 years... in a psychiatric hospital.

Didn't have TV in the rooms. There was one in the patient's lounge... but of course the most dominating patient got to pick what we watched.

My family bought me a mini DVD player. Much better... and I could watch things in English.

However, I don't think I would have objected to being charged 6.- per night for TV, if I was told about the charge in advance.

What I did object to was the 15.- a night charge which my insurance company sent me. They claimed it was for food, bedding, utilities etc. But when I rang up the hospital to query a bill they told me they didn't get that 15.- a night ... So what is it really for?

The 15CHF charge is normally the charge for meals. Your insurance covers you for medical treatment and not for the meals, which seems fair enough to me. I was charged to obtain the Wifi password in hospital.

It must depend on your insurance. We have semi private coverage and when my husband had his operation and was in for 3 or 4 days, the meals were just tagged onto the rest of the bill and counted towards the insurance.

I had to go to the canteen to get my meals and pay for them onsite as the visiting wifey.

I've just got general. I've been in Liestal, Universitšt (Basel), Bruderholz and the Merian Iselin. I've never been charged for meals - they've always been covered by my insurance.

For a few days, that is great. But try and spend 6 months in hospital, 4.5 of which in traction - and being on your own would turn into your worst nightmare. Of course in those days, no tv, no internet either. And now, back in CH after all those years, pre-existing conditions = not able to have any extra cover. Being in a room of 5 would be considered a luxury in the UK.

I think 6 CHF a day if really fair enough - the price of a cup of coffee. It is an added extra, and it is charged as such all over, not just CH.
