universitatsspital zurich will not give test results

Hi all,

Can anyone suggest a course of action for the following;

In February of 2012 my wife had tests done at the univeritatspital in zurich. These are important genetics tests and we were told that we should get the result in around three months.

In May we started to get the bills, these tests are expensive, but no results.
I called the doctor that did the tests and she said that they have the tests but need to prepare the report and it should take about two weeks.

In June I called again and was told that a proffesor must sign off but I will get them in about two weeks.

I called twice again in July and got the same story.
In August I called again and asked to make a complaint. A nice person said that what was going on was not good and they would forward the complaint to sort this out but nothing happened.
At the end of August I called again and was told that the person who has to sign it is very busy and has many conferences to go to so has no time to do this.

So basically we have paid around 3000chf and the hospital has not sent us anything.

Can anyone advise us how we can get the report & results?

Thanking for any information you can give,
Boris

Re: universitatsspital zurich will not give test results

Without knowing the full details it looks like someone has botched something somewhere, either lost the results or similar.

You could write to the hospital and address it to one of the management, cc to the department your wife went to.

List the key details; date of initial appointment, list of tests, number of times and when you contacted the to follow up for results and their respective responses.

Give them a timeframe of when you would like the results of the tests and/or a full explanation with a repeat of the tests then tell them you will take it to a higher authority (not sure what this would be but someone might be along soon to add to this).

It's certainly NOT acceptable to hold onto the results for 8 months with no explanation.

Another question, was your wife referred there by a GP or other doctor? If so, you could get them involved.

Good luck!

Re: universitatsspital zurich will not give test results

I feel sorry for you.

Here 's my piece of advice:

- List all your actions (date, time, with whom you spoke) and the results and send a registered letter to the head of Universitätsspital and require an answer (deutsch: Stellungnahme).

- Another option is to contact the Swiss patient's organisation. Here is the link. They have a Beratungsstelle in Zurich: http://www.citymed.ch/Schweiz-Patien...454-14471.html

- Regarless of what you do, try to get allways written information. If they call you, confirm by e-mail what has been said.

- Could it be that they allready sent the report to your medical insurance?

Hope this helps.

Re: universitatsspital zurich will not give test results

I've had this problem with Unispital - they are wonderful at the time of treatment, but follow through can be difficult.

Did your GP send you for the tests? If so, get him/her to chase down the results. Sometimes they respond better to a fellow professional.

Are the tests covered by your insurance? If so, perhaps they could help chase down the results.

Call every week, or even more often. Eventually the admin will get tired of you and start to remind the professor more frequently.

If all else fails, send a registered letter, detailing the story asking for the test results by x date.

It's very frustrating, I know. Just keep pestering. Good luck.

Re: universitatsspital zurich will not give test results

As far as I know, you go for the tests and if everything is fine, you don't get the results or any call from the hospital .. But if they need to see you they would give a call/letter for the appointment. This is generally a case of bad news ... In this scenario you could ask for the reports (stating for e.g. you need to consult some doctors in your home country) and they would give you the report. If you are lucky, you may ask and then get a report in english as well, but the doctors are not bound to give the reports in english ...

Every time I've had tests I've had the results, whether they are normal or not. My doctor told me that even x-rays are my property and they are obliged to give them to you.

I've got some lovely pics of my shoulder gathering dust behind my desk as I write this..

The problem with the admin/management option is that the unispital seems to be broken up into isolated departments that have there own management. I will have a look if there is a governing body for the whole spital.

My wife was refered by a doctor. I will see if she can help.

These tests are not covered by insurance and they are supposed to be sent to us directly.
Thanks for the link, i did not think/consider that such an organisation existed... Will try this first thing on Monday.

Many thanks,
B

I have noticed this when my doctor does my regular blood tests, on the bills you get just the summary of what was done but not the results. For these specific tests though a report.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Youve given me some more options to try and returned some hope that we can get to the end of this sad unispital experience.

Im also impressed how quickly the help came... Next problem I have Im writting on this forum

Thanks all,
Boris

Never pay for tests you have not got the results for. Sending to the Dr only is unacceptable to me especially if I am paying!

I dont think that would work in this case as the bill generation/collection is outsource to a different company who's only objective is to get the bill payed.

If they have not given you the results, there is no reason to assume the tests have been done, so no reason to pay anything. Once you tell them results are required before you pay they will send ASAP.

Been there! got the results & no need to pay for a Dr to tell me they were all within limits, as the normal range of results is shown....

If you do write a letter, make sure you send it by recorded delivery. Makes it clear to the other side that you are treating this as a serious matter.

Edit: If your wife was referred by your GP then he or she should also be involved.

Edit2: If you write, state a date by when you expect the problem to be resolved if they wish to avoid the matter being escalated.

Cheers,
Nick

One of the bills we did not pay by the appointed time and were contacted by the bill collection company that told us that they are contracted to issue and collect the bill and they do not consern themselves with what the bill is for. Failure to be may result in fines and credit issues. I know that some companies do there own billing, for example my local gp, and in this kind of situation I would believe there is room to negotiate.

A company cannot collect until they have delivered, it's very simple. Don't be intimidated by crooks. There is nothing to negotiate!
Tell them in writing that you will pay within 7 days of receipt of the results, send it registered.
If it goes to court what do you think the judge would say?

stop ! never mix up the two sides. the medical side and the financial side in case of the Uni-Spital are completely separate. Further on, realize that the Uni-Spital is divided into semi-independent departments who behave almost like separate hospitals.

Rather tell those there that your wife is ready to come back for a repetition in case anything is unclear or doubtful about the results

You also might consult your general practitioner to arrange your wife to be sent to Triemli-Spital or Waid-Spital (both city-owned) for a repeat check-up. No problem really. I in 88 lived in the city but as working at the airport consulted a doctor in Kloten and so got to the Uni-Spital who saved my life. Actually again as they already did so in my first hours on the planet when I had problems to get enough oxygen. They apparently put me in an "oxygen tent" to get me through. As the also cured a clavicular fracture and well did the circumcision when it was in demand to me and my brother, I have invincible trust into their medical capabitlities but not so much into their administrative capabilities. The apparently hesitate to admit that the "tests" went wrong, which hints to the possibility that the mistake was done by a high ranking shaman which means one of the professors
