Freelancer possibility ???!!! or a Money-Laundering

Hello all,
Some months ago I read an announcement in the Jobs section of EF:
ADT SURVEY LTD is looking for freelancers!
Work 5-10 hours weekly as a freelancer & earn 340 CHF - 470 CHF. Immediate start !!!
And as a job is very necessary for me for the moment (as for any unemployee) I decided to apply for this position as "Freelancer !!!"
Some weeks ago I received an e-mail and they told me that they have accepted me as a Freelancer and the duty was to make survey here in Switzerland in some well-known companies because of the complains of customers.
I waited these days to have any questionares where I can work for these surveys by asking people and they experiences with these companies.
But the only thing was a cheque in my name with an amount of money.
The duty was to convert this cheque in money, then I have to keep my payment of 470 CHF and the difference to be sent with Western Union in a name that they have written in email. The job will become with a compesation of 470 CHF for the "Survey" and will increase in the future.
I refused to do this job and I rip the cheque.

Is this a real Freelancer or a Money-Laundering?

The EF must be very carefully when they published these announcements about employment opportunities.

could well be money laundering, or just fraud. Banks don't issue cheques in CH, any check you deposit will take a month to really clear.

It's pure money laundering and you can be held accountable.

Usualy starts of small and ends up big....

That's assuming the cheque does not bounce, which is the most likely scenario IMHO.

Re: Freelancer possibility ???!!! or a Money-Laundering

Sounds like the latter to me and you did well in destroying the cheque.

When it comes to jobs adverts, as with buying items etc, ultimately it's the job seeker's responsibility to perform thorough due diligence before proceeding, especially when the employer appears elusive and does not provide much information about themselves eg a website link, a company email address etc.

Out of interest, was the position posted in the paid for advertisements section of EF or the free "Jobs Offered" section in the "Market Place"? Not that it makes much difference...

This is exactly what I thought.

I'd stay clear of this "job". It sounds very shady.

Re: Freelancer possibility ???!!! or a Money-Laundering

It's a sponsored advert

http://www.thelocal.com/premiumjobs/...vert_copy_.pdf

I have to assume The Local, and hence EF, are part of the money laundering business. One or two seconds' due diligence (i.e. typing marcuss.net into google) would show that it doesn't appear to add up.

Re: Freelancer possibility ???!!! or a Money-Laundering

OK!

Basically, my comment was meant to mean ... companies (such as The Local, and no doubt almost every other publishing company) just accept advertisers' money. You need to check things yourself, regardless of whether the ad appeared posted by a random forum member, or appears to be linked to EF or The Local in some way.

They're all just as likely to be dodgy. Or a good opportunity.

Re: Freelancer possibility ???!!! or a Money-Laundering

Any "job" that asks you to cash a check for them then keep a bit of it and send the rest back is a scam. Either the check will bounce or they are using to launder money.

I hope you still have the cheque. You should send it to interpol or something.

Re: Freelancer possibility ???!!! or a Money-Laundering

This is not money laundering, it's simply a scam, as the aim is to extract money by sending it via Western Union. This advert should be removed! It's fraud and regardless if they are paying or not it should be taken off!
