I'll take that as the "red" side of the Pennines.
Wash your mouth out with soap and water. It's the 'white' side obviously.
We did make occasional forays over there to visit my uncle though and fortunately always made it back in one piece.

I had to google it too along with Dutch oven. We obviously have the same level of ignorance in these matters. It must be a result of growing up in the north of England during the 60s/70s although I was on the right side of the pennines.

The BOB sounds like a bit of a nut job to me. I have been lucky enough to have not yet encountered a BOB during my 2 years here.

I'll let you get away with that as we do seem similar, though my cursor was hovering over the groan button .

Of course the red side is obviously far superior!

Careful.... do you mean on the right side of the map, ie east side, or do you mean on the correct side? English is SO difficult compared to French & German.

BOB update: Met Friendly Gemeinde Lady in the Post Office this morning, who told me BOB has complained and asked to have me 'put under review'. WTF! I blanched and opened my mouth to explain, but FGL rolled her eyes and said 'along with the rest of the village'.

Seems MOC was about right.

And I hereby promise to refrain from further excessive uses of TLAs.
The rest of the village wants you put under review as well? My God, what did you do?

BOB followed me all the way to my car, ostentatiously took down the Schildnummer, and in her piece de resistance, threw her dogshit bag at the back of my car.
Since your interesting piece does not conclude with a serious assault or stress-based cerebral haemorrhage, I can only applaud your self-restraint. I don't think I could have managed it...

One question I have had for some time about BOBs: will Swiss women generally end up like this, once they have reached a certain age? Or is it something specific to this generation and BOBism will die out as the BOBs do?

(The answer to this question will affect my long-term choices of where to live!)

Of course, she means the right side of the map (Yorkshire is the East of the UK), as opposed to Lancashire on the left of the map, which is the right (correct) side!

Thanks for clearing that up Sbrinz!

Re: BOBs (Bothersome Old Bags)

Reminds me of the MOC I met in Unterageri a month or two ago, in Coop.

There's me, minding my own business with our daughter chirping away in the buggy. I get my goods, pay, even saying my P&Q's in german, and start packing them in the buggy.

When my daughter decides to get out the buggy. Quickly, and in a normal (english) voice I say "NO! Stay in the buggy."

Next thing I know, I've got a previously unseen MOC in my face, saying "how dare I not speak german", and how I should speak german if I want to integrate, and how my standing in the town is under threat, and how disgraceful it is etc etc.

Maybe my "Ich lernen Deutsch am Abend Klasse." (this might be poorly constructed btw) defused her before she got to the s**t throwing stage...but she was still ranting when I turned and walked away.

BOBs remind me of my country's 'mohair berets.'
Elderly people, especially women, seem to be the target of many stereotypes, which sometimes bothers me, though.

I wish that this kind of behavior was reserved only to old people here (or anywhere else). I'm surprised that your use of German didn't set the old bat off even more, which happened to my wife a couple of times when we first moved here.

Re: BOBs (Bothersome Old Bags)

What a nutcase.

I fondly remember my first winter here in Verbier, thirty years ago. Walking by a few shops with stone pillars in front, all covered in a blanket of fresh snow, which was still coming down hard. reaching out and grabbing a handful to marvel how light the powder was, when a lady rushes out of the hairdresser or clothing shop and starts yelling maniacally at me, the gist being that I had ruined the decor outside of her shop by scooping snow off off one of the pillars. I just had to laugh in her face, which certainly didn't defuse things much. Oh, happy days.

It was an early lesson in Swiss manners, and the extremes to which such a marvelously organized and civilly responsible population could veer towards. In many ways I have come to resemble the Swiss I used to laugh at so much, but I just hope my friends will punch me in the head if it ever gets that bad.

Well the right side on the map (ie East) is also the right (ie correct) side so there's nothing too difficult to understand there.

Hannah's auntie we really should try to meet up sometime I would love to meet you. I have to admit that on my visits to Bury as a kid it didn't seem that bad over that side.

My Uncle lived in Walmersley which seemed to be one of the pusher parts to us. We drove throug or near Ramsbottom plenty of times but never actually stopped there.

Re: BOBs (Bothersome Old Bags)

Speaking of MOB's
Hey Slammer's landlady has this whole crazy old woman thing on a new level altogether.
Last week her husband placed a axe, a saw, a hammer and a crowbar next to her room (the room nobody has seen, spoken in a Goa'uld voice) and she asked me to take it downstairs, after giving me and the other lodger a hard time over who could have possibly put it there. I thought that maybe her husband wanted one of us to take a hint..
Anyway she was afraid of the axe as it is possessed by metal from the knife that Boris Jelzin used to kill his father, and that it came to Basel on the space ship used by Swiss astronauts (Hey did you know that Zürich has a spaceport in the university?) when they flew into space to pick up the blind boy who has been living for the last 10 years on the space station and that good 'ol Boris has only one leg after his father cut it off by the very same knife whose metal is now in the axe.
Aaaand she is now writing a letter on her ancient typewriter to the Swiss secret service so that this whole sordid affair can go before a international court of law.. Aaand how does she know this??
Any takers?
Well it's like this..
Her mother, a cousin of queen Victoria by the way helped deliver Boris Jelzin's son and he told her the story.
(Jelzin had two daughters, I WENT AND FRIKKIN GOOGLED IT for sanity's sake!)

No! Thank all ye gods and little catfish.
Things just as scary though..
Knocks on door to complain bitterly about honorable other lodger leaving the landing light on..
Wearing a summer dress and a straw hat with god awful red cotton cherries.
Garish make up and red lipstick applied with a table tennis bat in the middle of an earthquake.
Yesterday she cornered me in a bottleneck between the outer door and my door. She gets this look when she wants to ramble crazy, kinda like headlamps to my deer. I can't pass without running her over, she holds a black scarf thingy, ripped to shreds and tells me that she has gone to the police over the matter and I should not be scared if the secret service knocks on my door.
"What do you think of this Herr Slammer?" she asks holding this rag under my nose. "The Turk broke in a cut this to shreds"
I am no expert so I answer: "Oh! I thought it belonged that way"
"No!" she shouts, quite peevish "it is the Turkish rapist that did this."
(Don't ask)
Then the best question up to date...
"...Can you not see that? Are you mad Herr Slammer???...."
