the price of drinks out!!!

this bs is really annoying me. I can easily spend 50 chf on a round of drinks if i don't watch out. the difference of price between booze in bars, and in the store is so disparate that i hate the bars and need special deals with the bar tenders, which is still high. I know that they have collectively raised prices (the establishments) which is supposed to be illegal. however they do it unofficially and get away with it. rent and salaries does not explain the price. i want cheaper drinks this is outrageous.

Re: the price of drinks out!!!

a bottle of cheap wine in denner is 3-4 francs. a bottle of wine in a bar is like 30-40 or something outrageous.

Re: the price of drinks out!!!

It annoys me too, that's why we don't go out much, plus babysitter at 20chf per hour (and that's cheap) BUT living here most people do get a higher salary so sometimes you have to accept it's part of living in CH, I've recently entertained myself by cycling up the beautiful mountains and making the best of the good free things you can do here, then stopping for maybe 1 beer after which cuts down costs and also my weight has reduced by 211b which is a bonus. I know this doesn't answer your anger at the prices, but just trying to say I was in a similar position when I moved here from the UK where I used to go out several times a week and not even think about it :-(

Another friend of mine here used to just order soft drinks and smuggle vodka in the bars, although I'm not sure how she got away with this

Ever go to America? Bottle of Berringer Zinfandel for 6 dollars in the store, go to 10 different restaurants, you'll find 10 different prices, and they will all be over 50 dollars. 50% or more of restaurant or bar that serve food income comes from sales of alcohol. Food prices could even be higher if it wasn't for the price of the booze.

Likewise, in the US, when I worked my job that gave me net of about 7 dollars an hour, going to the bar I would easily spend over 3.50 for a beer. And really, I don't understand what the complaint is about. When I go out drinking, if I don't have a train, I can't drink more then 2. And it's also why drinks are more money here. Before they passed the strict drinking and driving laws, people bought more alcohol when they went out. Now, if they don't have a train they limit their intake, and therefore sales go down. So they have to make their money somewhere. I don't need to drink over a 100 CHF a night.

I normally kick it around 90. And that's buying drinks for others. But at 90, that's 10 pints of Guiness. I mean, why would I need 10 pints more then once a week?

Soft drink not necessarily cheaper than wine.

I bow to your superior knowledge.... I`ve never had the "courage" to sample floor cleaner!

I`ll stick to Landi beer - .55 a bottle - compared to restaurant beer at 5.40. (Okay, it`s not the best, but one sort-of acquires the taste)
At home I drink Whisky - which I would never order in a pub - where two drinks would buy a bottle! Actually one drink would buy a bottle, if bought in Germany!)

And wine ...... what we buy from Denner (when they have their specials) for Sfr10 would cost +- Sfr40 in restaurant. But drinking out one has to consider everyone making their profits, huh?

Look out for him over in the Market place some time soon. He's been making an awful lot of posts in a very short period of time.

This is not a new phenomenon nor is it unique to Switzerland. You can go to any country in Europe and pay a huge % mark-up on drinks in restaurants and bars compared to the supermarkets.

Re: the price of drinks out!!!

Swiss farmers drink Landi beer, and it ain't that bad, have you tried it, or does expensive beer always taste better? There is one cheap beer that does taste awful, Denner's bottled beer.

After all the costs, Swiss bar prices do not turn into huge profits. The non smoking law hit them badly.

COOP own-brand beer at 50 rappers a can is fine. Not special, but perfectly drinkable and miles better than supermarket brand beer in UK.

Re: the price of drinks out!!!

Farmer isn't so bad and especially so when it's priced at 50 Rappen + the 25 Rappen you get back for deposit hehe.

Problem is that after a few rounds you start to swell like a balloon. Meh, never stopped us from drinking it. Good+cheap=beer = St. Gothard from Aldi, 80 rappen.

I went to a swiss wedding a year and a half ago, and they had two drinks, some wine, and that Landi Farmer's Beer. Everyone loved it. And were surpirsied at my arrogance of not knowing it. Imagine the loot they saved on doing a Landi styled wedding? It was an awesome tiem though.

AG Canton baby!!!
