Star wars - please explain

I like how on Swiss tv you can switch from dubbed to original language. But why not star wars? Do they want us to think that some of the greatest films made are actually German? Ahhh!!!

Re: Star wars - please explain

I guess it's because to transmit both languages they have to send the entire sound track in mono. And people wanted to watch the film in (Dolby Surround?) stereo.

If the programme is transmitted digitally this is no longer a problem. I think they normally send the Geman version in Dolby Surround and the Original version in Stereo or something like this.

You have to keep in mind, that Swiss TV has to purchase both the German and the English language version in order to send both language. The most likely reason I can think of for them not sending in both languages is that the company that distributes Star Wars demanded to much money for the English version.

Maybe they didn't want the Swiss to realise that the clones are all kiwis

It is possible to tweak your TV to get Star Wars in Galactic Basic where English is not available. New TVs also have an option for Bocce

I was hoping that in German maybe skywalker doesn't turn bad in the scene where Samuel l Jackson gets axed. But no he sounds even more bad in German

What I hate is when they dub over a show with german, but you can still hear the original English underneath. Was trying to watch a Top Gear on a german channel. Very distracting! Pick one or let me choose! =)

Star Wars deserves to be watched with the full sound (and a big big screen is better), so no bilingual. (actually it's a favour you've got bilingual with English.)

:D

If all Swiss people could speak English, then it wouldn't be a problem.

Dubbing it in German would make it a cult-like movie if they would also translate the names. Unfortunately they don't.

Why would you transalte Han Solo? Han is not actully an English name is it? And Solo is as much English as it is German.

The Force was actually translated to "die Macht".

I don't know, I'm in the French part....

At the time of the original trilogy, the translators had (in France) the obligation to translate in french the names of the characters, which was quite *strange* sometimes...

My mistake. :msnblush: My thoughts were that, with the way Yoda speaks in English, would he sound more "normal" (in a grammatical sense) in another language, such as German or French?

Nope Yoda screws up German grammar as well. The names of the characters was not translated, just spoken with a German slant.

Wouldn't Han Solo simply become Hans-Ueli?

Wait, wait, just need to recompute Starwars into a Swiss context...

Does not really compute. however some may see Bern as Corusant, home of the evil empire, Appenzell could be the boonies in Tatooine and the Feierabend rally, Zürich north ring, as a pod race.

Wouldn't the EU be a better option for the Evil Empire?
