Sick of all the smokers!

After moving here from Australia, I am shocked beyond belief to see how many smokers there are here.

In Australia, smoking is now considered anti-social and socially unacceptable. There are hardly any smokers left in Australia now. In Switzerland, it seems like just about everyone smokes, and its often impossible to avoid.

In Australia, the government keeps raising the taxes on cigarettes to try and discourage more people from smoking. AFAIK, a pack of cigarettes in Australia now costs around $25? Not only this, but Australia also has very strict anti-smoking laws in public places, this also includes outdoor areas where there are people. Smoking has been completely banned in most outdoor malls, playgrounds, parks, train stations, etc. Also, if you are caught throwing a cigarette butt on the ground, you get a $150 on the spot fine. To put it simply, the government has made it very difficult for people to smoke.

There is also much more public awareness and education about the dangers of smoking. The quit smoking business (eg nicorette) is just as big as the cigarette companies themselves. I see nothing in Switzerland about the dangers of smoking.

Don't get me wrong, if the swiss want to kill themselves by smoking then that is their choice. But what angers me is that their second hand smoke affects other people who aren't smokers. I have lost count at the number of times some inconsiderate smoker at a train station has lit up a cigarette while next to me, blowing smoke in my face. I can't believe that the non-smokers are forced to go into those smoke free rooms they sometimes have at the stations. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Shouldn't there be a designated smoking area away from everyone else?

Also for such a clean/tidy country, why are so many cigarette buts on the ground tolerated? It seems the swiss hate people littering, yet its totally fine to throw your dirty cigarette buts on the ground. Whats with that?

I can't believe that the swiss recently voted against banning smoking in more places, with 66% against the ban. I heard that about 33% of people in switzerland smoke, so why are the other 33% voting against it if they are non-smokers? Do they enjoy being around smokers and having smoke blown in their face? I really can't work it out.

Even in Germany there are much fewer smokers. The swiss seem to smoke more than any other country I have been to. Very odd for a country that prides itself in good health. Perhaps this is why health insurance is so expensive - to pay for all the smokers that get cancer and other smoking related disease.

Is anyone else here sick to death of all the smokers?

"I am shocked beyond belief" to see how intolerant one can become even for a good cause.

I am too.. but what we could possibly do. Do hope those inconsiderate idiots who blow out smoke in faces of the public have a painful smoking related death as they have printed on the cigarette packs they smoke.

Are they plain simple stupid?

I don't smoke, but my (Swiss and others) friends do. I'm pretty sick of the CONSTANT mingeing over smoking the dogooders and other busybodies of this forum like to go on about. So antismoking isn't taken without debate, and given a choice, the locals have accepted that smokers can be. Get over it or move back to whatever fanatic place you came from. Oh and watch that South Park episode: http://www.southparkstudios.com/full...07e13-butt-out, it's puts things into perspective.

Some 30 to 32% of the above 18 years old people, yes. Too many still, true, but lots better than the 55 to 60 it was in the past

"the government has made it" ? Here in Switzerland, neither a Cantonal nor the Federal government can "make it difficult" as they have to bear in mind that any tough legislation usually means an approval by the people in a direct vote. This sometimes is a DISadvantage but helps to keep the politicians in check

there were various reasons for the NO
- many saw the danger of a loss of Cantonal independence
- it was feared that the limitations would increase endlessly
- in the Canton of ZH, the served fumoirs were/are seen as a nice compromise which would have been destroyed by the proposed law
-
the electorate of the Canton of Solothurn a year or two ago rejected a law proposal of the smokers to drop the relatively strict Cantonal ban in favour of the more lenient federal ban. THIS shows that the status-quo is what people in most places want, and not some radicalist changes. Modern Switzerland, just as modern Lebanon, started out of a Civil War, and succeeded via compromises. It in 1849 was victorious union-General Henri Dufour who convinced the Confederates to adopt the "check+balances" constitution of the USA, but as an added compromise replace the president by a group of seven people.

What will happen in the future is that certain Cantons who still only have the Federal ban, will via a public vote introduce stricter Cantonal votes

In Germany it is about 26 against 32 in Switzerland. Whatever some "statistics" say, there is more smoking in Southern France (south of the Grenoble-Bordeaux-line), in Italy, in Greece and on the Iberian Peninsula.

Cancer is NOT caused by smoking. I know as I HAD cancer and was a non-smoker and many many non-smokers get cancer and many many many heavy smokers do NOT So please abstain from telling LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES Your credibility anyway is down the toilet

Re: Sick of all the smokers!

The Swiss Government are purposely keeping the tobacco tax low, to keep the price down, so mountain men can still afford to smoke pipes; old men in village bars can still afford to smoke their twisty cigars, and all the yoofs are able to buy cigs from an early age.

You have to bear 2 things in mind:

- with all the sicknesses and diseases that smoking tobacco produces, it is important to maintain sufficient requirement for German immigrants in the medical profession;

- and with constant influx of foreigners, it is necessary to facilitate premature death in the populace, so the population doesn't expand too quickly.

The Swiss Federal government on the basis of decisions by the two chambers of parliament increased the tobacco tax to the present level
http://www.vimentis.ch/d/lexikon/123/Tabaksteuer.html
this part out of it
Beispiel: Für eine Zigarettenschachtel mit insgesamt 20 Zigaretten und einem Preis von 7 CHF beträgt die Tabaksteuer etwa 4.10 CHF, also etwa 58% des Kaufpreises.
shows that you in case of cigarettes pay 58% of the total price to the Confederation. The many regulations about where and how they can be sold and the age-limitations now in force are all done to bring tobacco consumption down
--- a tax whichz is above 100% is NOT low

Seriously... another thread on the exact same subject? It's like Groundhog Day, but more frequent. Almost a 10-a-day habit.

Can we just merge this and all the others into one big thread, roll it up and smoke it? (in a well-ventilated area away from passers-by, of course)

I hate to be the one to point out the obvious here, but if you prefer the Aussie non smoking way of life, well...

I don't understand why you are shocked that there are so many smokers here, and therefore, they would want to keep smoking going. I was suprised too when I got here about how much smoking was part of the daily routine here, like maybe how it was in 1950 in the US. But I'd say Switzerland today has a lot in common with the US in the 1950's; as can be seen by a number of complaint thread on this forum.

I don't see why this country should hike up taxes to 25 a pack, if people are perfectly fine smoking tobacco. They know the health risks. I mean they are allowed to smoke pot here as well. And for the country most people think the world over as having some of the cleanest air and great wide open spaces to enjoy it, I don't know why you are concerned about those who do get together and drown their nights away in a cloud of smoke.

I mean seriously, who cares how smoking is regulated in Australia? What does that have to do with the people here?
