Always check your bills!

Yesterday, when checking out at that well-known German supermarket chain now opening up all over CH, took out a Fr.10.00 note to pay for 6/7 items and was appalled at a request for Fr.16.20. So.... checking the bill we found for 3 x 0.49 rappen items, we had been charged 2.49 - 6.00 too much. Manager very reluctant to refund money and when we became irate, was heard to utter 'calmez-vous'. Eventually Fr.6.00 was reluctantly refunded, despite that we pointed out in UK if this happens items are given free - no such luck here! Shame on you Aldi!

Re: Always check your bills!

Sorry to hear of that happening to you. Usually they'd be gracious about it.

What happened to me was: I had bought two different boxes of frozen fish and when I came home, I saw in the bill the cashier had charged me twice for the more expensive box (probably thinking the second one was the same).

Moral of our stories is: Check, check, check! Before you leave the cashier's counter.

Re: Always check your bills!

Why only this morning I was overcharged by 11 odd francs. The till machine hadn't recognised the special offer on the beer I bought. The cashier woman was very apologetic and refunded me immediately.
Denner in Cham which was where I ended up after finding that the new Aldi doesn't open until tomorrow

Re: Always check your bills!

Shopped at Aldi in CH and D many times, never had that problem or a bad experience. Sorry to hear that. My wife is good at checking the receipts though.

Why not?

The items worth buying (read: cheaper than in CH chains) are paper napkins, toilet paper, olives in jars, bath oil, foot cream, 100% fruit juice including a very good pineapple juice, baking ingredients, Knuspriger Gebaeck (muesli cookies), tea bags, mangoes, not-half-bad chocolates.

Probably nothing, but I like to buy locally and I dislike stores like Lidl and Aldi - remind me of Walmart.

Cochrane has made some interesting contributions
Re: Always check your bills!

Shit happens! This was probably the result of some kind of incomprehension...

In any case, pointing out "that in my country things would go different" is always the wrong thing to say to a local: you're likely to just end up fueling dislike for foreigners...

By the way, a cashier at Sainsbury's tipped twice the one bottle of Glemorangie I had bought; since the total of the shopping was unusually high, I checked the bill while I was still standing at the till and realized the mistake. The cashier sent me to the internal customer services counter, where they had to go through my whole shopping, after which all they did was refund me the money for the non-existent bottle (which is all that I wanted). Just to point out that I was in the UK and I wasn't given the bottle for free...

That's my experience, also in the UK. Miserable bint in the local butchers tried once to tell me I'd put her off cashing up because I'd been chatting to her!

Customer service? Don't think so..!

Having said that, would I go back if something hadn't been charged? Err..

Swings and roundabouts, as they say.

I wish it were so ... Wal*Mart is one of the things we miss here.

(flame suit is on, so bring it on)

Have you shopped at Aldi in Switzerland? Ever been inside one? You should try it, there is a whole bunch of Swiss-made products on the shelves.

Re: Always check your bills!

Just a few things to watch for, and it applies to all supermarkets, even though this thread may be pointing at certain ones.
  • If you can, watch the till display as items go through. It should be easy to spot a duplicated item, or one that seems the wrong price.
  • When using the weighing machines in the fruit and vegetable section, read the printed label to see if it matches what you are buying. Sometimes I've pressed the wrong button, but on more than one occasion the machine was pricing up another higher cost product, even though I had the number correct.
  • If in doubt about a given weighing machine, try another one. You might be surprised that there can be a difference.
  • Check that special offer items are charged correctly
  • If you see a big display offering say 1 litre bottles of olive oil at a good discount, don't be tempted to go for a half litre bottle unless a discount price for that is clearly marked.
  • Always count your change.
  • Always collect the receipt.

It doesn't hurt to check your bill as you are unloading your bags at home.

Re: Always check your bills!

The second day we arrived, we went to the city under the trian station and I brought a pair of gloves for my son. The lady charged me CHF10 when they were clearly marked CHF6 when I pointed to the price on the item she was very rude and chucked the gloves at me saying something in Swiss (good job I can't speak it yet) the moral is I won't be going back there. There loss...... it's a shame but in any language there is a certain amount of customer service you except.

Re: Always check your bills!

How on earth is anyone able to watch as the cashier is ringing up at Aldi when they go as crazy fast as they do??!! I am lucky if I can quickly throw my items into the cart before the goods topple to the floor.

Anyway, if you do finally figure it out that you have been wrongly charged (which likely is only going to happen after you have moved away from the cashier), what are you going to do then? Aldi is set-up to get the customer out of the store quickly after having paid and there is not exactly a customer service desk you can go to.

For information Sainsburys do not give the item for free if they make a mistake. Asda & Tesco do.
I bought my son a 3 for 2 offer on deodrant and because it came up as being charged for all three they refunded me another 3 and I did not have to pay for the original 3. He certainly had enough deodrant to give him the Lynx effect for weeks!

Re: Always check your bills!

And always take your receipts with you.

A true story a police friend of ours told us about, happened recently in Canton Zurich:

A lady with a huge shopping trolley full of food paid for her goods at the checkout. She left the shop, taking her trolley to her car in the car-park, but left the receipt at the check-out. The woman next in line took her reciept and followed her out into the car-park. There, a row started. Apparently the lady who took the receipt said the shopping was hers and she wanted it back. The police were called in. The cashier could no longer say for sure who had paid for what, so the lady who was holding the receipt got to keep the goods!

Sorry but that sounds like a typical legend that happened to a friend of a friend to me.

I can however confirm that you don't get something for free just because the cashier made a mistake. They usually make mistakes for the benefit of me anyway (and I point it out to them).

Yes, I suppose it does.

I could give names, places and times as well as more details as to how they were dressed, age, nationality etc etc. But, that's not the nature of the forum. The "story" comes from a "reliable source" who happened to be there because it's his job. A friend of a friend ? If you want to look at it that way.

I just wanted to warn you that whoever holds the receipt is considered the owner of the goods in the eyes of the law.
