My bank is driving me insane!!!

Here's the deal folks:

I need to withdraw my money from my bank in Luzern before I leave the country and am trying to get them to issue a cashier's check (bank draft) in dollars for the amount in my account. I have spoken to a lady there 3 times and she does not seem to have a clue as to what this is -- she always talks about "transferring your money to a bank overseas should be no problem". WTF??!! I want a cashier's check, not an electronic money transfer.

I have concluded one of 2 things:

1. She does not understand my English;
2. The Swiss banking system is way overrated if they cannot do something simple like this.

So folks, how the heck do I convince these people to issue me a cashier's check (bank draft) in dollars? ^&&%^&%*()*(&*^&*%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there a special magic German (Swiss German) word for this? Bloody aggravating this!

Re: My bank is driving me insane!!!

Swiss banking is vastly overrated. Just today, my credit card account was "lost" and it took 25 minutes and several calls to Zurich to "find" it. Also, cashiers NEVER have a clue as to what to do when you want to make a payment on your credit card. There were other screw ups too. The finacial advisors tend to be pretty clueless, so you are better off learning about the financial stuff yourself.

Re: My bank is driving me insane!!!

I wanted to pay my flat deposit with a bankers draft when I first moved here, as I didn't fancy converting large amounts of GBP into CHF and bringing it over.

I checked with the housing agency to see if this was OK, and they didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about. I don't even know if they have regular cheque books here.

Why not just arrange the transfer?

Cheques? Oh yeah, I remember them. I'd completely forgotten about them until I was in the UK last year and their quaint banking system reintroduced me to the concept.

If you ask for a Swiss Franc-base draft, will they issue it?
And why not simply transfer it electronically - much safer in my opinion

Re: My bank is driving me insane!!!

Coming from a banking background I will give you the very brief answer without too much explanation.

Tell them you would like a "Formular A" then fill this is with all your details and hand it to them. Then tell them that you have some crates of money round the bank that used to belong to Chief Hambutu of Guanabari who was killed in a politically motivated attack in 1937.

When thats finished call me to tell me how you got on. Oh and by the way, you'll only be allowed one phonecall.

Re: My bank is driving me insane!!!

Solidsnake - how long have you lived here? Surely in this time you have realised that the US and Swiss banking systems operate in different centuries? The Swiss system in the 21st and the US system in the 14th. I'm not at all surprised that the person at the bank found your request puzzling.

She mistakenly said it should be no problem to do a wire transfer to a US bank because she's never experienced the joys of attempting to do such a thing, and having the money go missing, delayed, etc.

If you were to get a cheque the fees and associated delays would also make it unattractive proposition.

Re: My bank is driving me insane!!!

Dont know why you are having such a hassle. I do this on a monthly basis.

A. Tell the bank that you would like a US dollar cheque.
drawn on a US bank in the states.
or

B. You can have the money wired directly to a bank of your choice in the States.
For this route you will need Your Account number and your banks

Address..

ABA - xxxxxxxxx Number
Swiss Code - xxxxxxxx Number

That is all that is required.

Either way the cost is approx 30 SFR.

The banking system in the USA is still in the dark ages. I can tell you horror stories dealing with US banks.

You are so right on this point!

I have some money in the US that I can't get out unless I go there in person. I could write myself a check and deposit it here. Of course, I don't have any checks for this account and to get checks... you guessed it, I have to go there in person....

Depends very much on the US bank I think...I sent money to California recently...made the order through ebanking on Wed night, payee received the funds Friday pm.

I think you meant to say your bank's:

- Address
- IBAN
- SWIFT code (aka BIC code)

Of course, whether you trust the SWIFT system is another story.

Actually, US banks do not use IBAN, and probably never well. Many US banks use a single BIC code for their entire network of branches, so the BIC number alone won't provide enough routing information to get through. In addition people will need to supply an additional routing number for them to figure out which branch to send it to.

Many US banks don't even participate in SWIFT, instead routing their payments via another bank who does. It's a joke, really.
