this statistic is overused and overblown, the vast majority of those "foreigners" are secondos or others who have lived in Switzerland for several years but have chosen to retain their "home" passport. it of course doesn't mean that the Swiss aren't open-minded, but I always feel compelled to rebut that particular stat.
If a foreigner choose to keep his original passport and doesn't get the little red book, he is still a foreigner and nothing else. Most of the secondos simply can't be bothered to get the Swiss passport because they don't see any advantage in having it.

The insinuation runs pretty clearly through many of your comments on the subject...
In your case, Leafy, if the cap fits...

Anyway, I can't remember how this thread diversion originally started - I was probably trying to wind up Odile - but I don't hate England. It's where I was born and raised, and I'll always have a little bit of affection for the old rainy country. But I can't say I like it very much any more, not after having seen how much better life is here in the Alps. And those pictures I posted (neither of which are mine - I got them off the internet) are fair representations of both the town in which I grew up and the area I live now. I'm sure you can understand why I prefer the latter.

(I could murder a pint of Pedigree after all this talk of the Old Country, mind...)

I'll presume that English is not your native language and will therefore give you the benefit of the doubt here, by also presuming that you don't appreciate what is implied in your statement above.

On the other hand I heard that it's a hassle to become Swiss because the requirements are demanging, for example you have to show your language skills. At least, you can choose: german, french, italien or romansch. Moreover you have to learn a lot about the history of Switzerland. Many Swiss don't know the answers, though.

the only point of my post is to highlight that using the % of "foreigners" living in Switzerland as evidence of its open-mindedness or "worldliness" (if that word even exists) is something of a misnomer, since to a newcomer to the country a secondo is the same as a local. assuming, of course, that people accept the premise that "being Swiss" is something more abstract than simply obtaining the right passport.

They are I am telling you. Verdict is in after 20 years of living in German speaking part. Yes there are SOME exceptions but as a whole I give them a big F. Swiss please put your ultra detailed day planners to the side for a second. Learn to accept kindness and help from others without thinking that they want something in return.

I award the cold Swiss a big F.

Re: Swiss are COLD!

This topic of conversation has come up so many times with so many people, Swiss and non-Swiss, during my extremely lengthy stay here.

The only satisfying answer I ever got to the question "why are the Swiss so unfriendly to foreigners" was one I once received from a Swiss: "that's not true. We are unfriendly to each other as well".

OK, I am happy I picked up 27 thanks for my previous post in this thread

Hey, different country, different culture.
Each country has its own history and as a result it is where it is. I can't understand that someone can get the death penalty (for example in USA), whereas in NZ they try to make the human beings better.
I usually go on vacation to Western USA for 2 or 3 week once a year. When I'm back and passing immigration at Zurich airport, many things seem strange to me (rude people). A few days later I'm used to it. One good turn deserves another!

Very good point Odile. This nickname is way too enigmatic and the post is too brave for a new member. No new member starts like this. OP obviously feels very relaxed here. Also it is very unlikely that he found this forum just now after 20 years of living here. He has been here before. The fact he did not comment on your post about it also means something.
It's not the first time I had read the forum in 20 years. Actually I did comment on her post. Some of us have a life outside internet forums so forgive me if I don't spend all day quoting each and every reply on this thread.

Confident people blend in every where easily and are relaxed by nature, just saying

This applies to foreigners with E.U. citizenship. Foreigners from countries in the Balkans, from Turkey, from Arab countries, from Iran, from Sri Lanka and from Vietnam really press forward to get Swiss citizenship. Most of them however carefully retain their "old" citizenship.

Alright, I know a chap who for decades worked at Turkish Airlines Zürich Airport, but became an AHV-retiree years ago. He for half a year went to Istanbul but then concluded that his city is Zürich and he now lives in Zürich and goes for holidays to Stanbul. He now is "a Turk in Zürich"

NO, they cannot choose. It has to be the language of the Canton in question. Yes, the procedure IS complicated, demanding and expensive, and so, many EU-citizens decide NOT to obtain CH citizenship. Legally, a foreigner first of all becomes a citizen of the Canton and this includes citizenship of the Confederation
