Re: Swiss are COLD!

I know. Confusing indeed;-P but you inspired me today. Switzerland is lovely. I will be happy to come back here when I'm 70.

My Swiss clients are nice and open but I think they are exception.
Foreigners are generally bad people. I know and believe that because the SVP says so. The most foreigners I know personally are nice people but I think they are an exception.

See, we racist swiss people are the ones who really understand you.

I agree. They are cold, rigid, predictable and racist. I've heard they behave differently and say different things when they don't know the person is not Swiss (racist comments) and are being fake when they know you are a foreigner. This is not my experience as I don't speak German or Swiss German but I still talk to people who have been here for years and unfortunately that's what they say. I hope my husband will finally see further than the numbers on his Swiss account but it will take time before we can move somewhere else so I decided to stay and well, suffer as if every day of my life I will be reminded this is not my home and never will be, will be a TORTURE.

I should offer my services to local community, advertise in German more. The problem is that I like when my clients are more like me... and Swiss clients if I can be honest I don't enjoy as they can never really come out of their shell and I love when people can come out of their shells even if it is little bit it is therapeutic and bounding. I don't feel so alone when I travel from one country to another so my work is also positively affecting my social life abroad but I never get this connection, good vibes from the Swiss so generally it is hard when it comes to "business" as I want to stay authentic, no fake smile or interest, no snobbish atmosphere but maybe I will have to change my attitude to "take, take, take" if I want to survive here. There is no Life without money but again money is not everything, we all know this. So I am another one contemplating "Should I stay or should I go?" but I don't want to bore you.
> Your Swiss clients may be the majority and NOT an exception.
> You say that you do not speak Standard German or Dialect. Why not ? Why not trying to learn German ? The dialect will then come later
> If for you and your husband only the bank-account is positive here you might rather trace for alternatives as also many other countries offer business potential.
> You talk with people who have been here for years ? But with your negative attitude will only hear the negative points. You HAVE your conclusion beforehand and then discuss matters, which is a non-scientific and rather non-professional approach
> back to the "Swiss account". You can retain that account even if you move elsewhere
> to advertise in German only makes sense if you take a more productive attitude towards this language
> "cold, rigid, predictable and racist" which simply means typical Europeans. Please abstain from telling tales about European countries free of racism. But realise that the majoriy of people all over the continent is NOT racist. Rigid and predictable however are most "North-of-the-Alps-Europeans". Please abstain from talking about "but they there .... are sooo very different" as that would be complete rubbish
> "take take take" ? What is your attitude now ? Are you a philantropist, donating your fortune generously to the needy, the poor, the ill and the elderly ?

> Finally take note that Switzerland never had to pull a wall up to prevent people from leaving - to paraphrase JFK

They are I am telling you. Verdict is in after 20 years of living in German speaking part. Yes there are SOME exceptions but as a whole I give them a big F. Swiss please put your ultra detailed day planners to the side for a second. Learn to accept kindness and help from others without thinking that they want something in return.

I award the cold Swiss a big F.

Collected by international friends travelling in Switzerland: swiss are "grumpy"; "cold"; "snobbish"; "arrogant"... especially, they said, in Zurich!

"the Swiss", to the extent you can lump people into a single bucket, are really no different than any other Germanic / Allemanic people. it must have been genetically bred into the tribes 1500 years ago, because I have Swedish family who have been in northern Minnesota in the US for 100 years that would make the typical local in Zurich look like the most open and funniest person you had ever met.

that said, nearly every single time another expat complains to me about "the Swiss" being arrogant, or snobbish, or standoffish, etc., that expat speaks absolutely zero German and even less dialect. for example:

"the Swiss guy at the restaurant clearly doesn't like foreigners, because he lied to me and said they don't offer takeout."

"did you try 'z'mitneh', or "zu mitnehmen'?"

"no, I don't know what those words mean."

Switzerland is a small country, and in that respect is much like a small town anywhere in the world. people are naturally mistrusting of outsiders, partly because they don't expect you to be around for very long and partly because they don't know you, and not making any effort to speak the local language(s) is not exactly the way to make them more trusting.

Re: Swiss are COLD!

The OP just gave them a "big F" which was a provocation anyway and he meant it generally as a whole nation. He was not talking about single examples so chill out.
I would see myself as a curious person not racist... so please don't take it too far. This is not racism at all... this is disappointment but I am still flexible and patient. However, it is sometimes difficult not to run into any prejudices after hearing negative opinions so often. I don't have to go through hell with my Swiss neighbours to know it can be hell for many foreigners.

By the way, speaking about racism? I know this is old and maybe irrelevant but I really like this experiment. I wonder if everyone remembers it.
