Re: Saving Seats?????? Come on people.

What annoys me about this particular practice is that people do it out of habit, even when there are plenty of places to sit.

If you were to go to a buffet restaurant, you would be first seated and then go up for food. Whats the difference?
Because, if everyone reserves seats there will never be anywhere to sit.

People leave, people sit down at empty spaces.

People leave, people reserve, nowhere to sit down.

Of all the things to complain about..
Or even worse, with three hungry children in tow.

I'd like to know I've got somewhere to sit before I get the food otherwise I'd rather go somewhere else.

Re: Saving Seats?????? Come on people.

Lol.

That's a national standard back home in India. Ooh the huge crowds trying to get in and grab onto last inches on the seats of a local train, yet the right to the seat would go to the people who manage to throw in the handkerchief from the window.

Frankly, i find it no big deal here. Hey, if i really wanted to grab that chair, i'd have called and reserved (if a restaurant) or would have come earlier!

Happy to do it when I am snowboarding because people do not expect that you queue up in your jacket, helmet, and gloves

Re: Saving Seats?????? Come on people.

The accepted etiquette in Switzerland is:

1. Find seat
2. Put a jacket on the seat/table or tilt chair so everyone knows it's saved.
3. Get food
4. Sit down, eat and stare at others who don't follow etiquette and are looking like lost sheep with a tray of food cooling off fast.
5. Think "selber schuld" and continue eating while gloating.

Re: Saving Seats?????? Come on people.

Maybe it is a national or cultural thing especially in crowded cities and places.

When in Rome ( or Germany, India etc. ), just do what others do.

What irritates me much more is saving several seats by an individual and even an "shdanafrei" does not seem persuasive enough.

Re: Saving Seats?????? Come on people.

Makes my blood boil on EasyJet - those couples who take a window seat and an aisle- and leave a free on in the middle and put all their stuff on it - then sit there with a smile on their face Last time I flew, I asked the one in the aisle to move and took the middle seat - and the woman said 'but there are other seats free' - 'so what was my reply' and sat down. She then asked if she could swap, and I said 'NO' i preferred being in the middle.

So OK, I am lying, I never did that - but oh, I was so sorely tempted

I've actually done it (twice)! And I am not small (by some, I am quite big - more tall than fat, but still big). Yes, the flight from Amsterdam to Basel and then Basel to Barcelona were quite uncomfortable for me, but I did take over both armrests and annoyed the heck out of my neighbors. And an iPad and noise cancelling headphones will only increase their irascibility, since I do look like I am enjoying the flight! I'm sorry, but if you think that paying the same price will get you more just because you rushed and pushed and shoved to be first in line after those Speedy Boarding fools, you're wrong.

Re: Saving Seats?????? Come on people.

Someone I know is such a snob (but still flies with EJ!) and paid for speedy boarding for the whole family. I did point out that she could have said quite a few quid, as they have 2 children under 5 - so could have gone first for free! She actually knew that ... but felt 'better' at being in the closest thing EJ can pass for 'business class' - honestly!

The funniest thing about Speedy boaders is when they get to board the bus first .

Not necessarily so--there's always the unsure decision whether Sleazyjet will board front and/or back or unboard front and/or back. FIFO/LIFO rules are sacrificed to random airport logistics.

edit---sorry this was just to do with getting on/off the plane-irrelaphant to the bus. The bus reverses that hierarchy (unless it's too packed and you get a private bus ride :P)

Hence why I prefer a seat assignment.

The best is the couple spliting the task. One stand in queue with the trolley while the other one goes around the store and bring the stuff in.
I saw a variation of this in Quebec: one parent gets up early, stands in line outside the closed doctor's clinic. Two hours later, that parent rings to tell the other parent to bring in the sick child as they are getting closer to actually seeing the doctor.

The sad part of this story isn't the fact they are saving a spot but the need to save one as the health system is crap.
